ESPN Layoffs (1 Viewer)

Jayson Stark was the guy on that list I'll miss. Love reading his stuff, and he comes on the radio here in KC once a week during baseball season to talk baseball. Always has good insights and just seems like a good dude.

Same here.  By far my favorite radio show they have.  I got concerned too when Stephen A. Smith started taking over their time slot. 

 
I think I am truly surprised there is an actual 2 page thread where people care. I'm in that age range where I grew up on ESPN when it was so popular and even I haven't found it relevant in nearly a decade.  To me, it is completely uneccesary outside the programming it has contractural rights for.

Eh, I drive quite a bit so their radio programming still matters to me.  I haven't watched sportscenter, ATH, First Take, PTI in years though. 

 
what's the name of the show with Stephen a. and that obnoxious white dude with the bimbo sitting between them?

that is the new espn.

the only thing I watch there now is the last 5 minutes of sports reporters.

 
ESPN was awesome until they went "corporate".  Network is a total pile of dog#### now and has been for a long time.

 
They could have laid off a lot more and nobody would care.  Network is generally terrible on most of their shows.  Maybe most people want to hear idiots yell at each other instead of just highlights of games or interviews, but I certainly have no interest in it

1984 - acquired by ABC

1995 - acquired by Disney 

Think Hearst Corp in between those?

I watched a lot of SC 1992-96. "Welcome to the Big Show" - Dan Patrick was great, and so was Keith Olbermann before he became insufferable. Those were some great production teams.

Not so much the last 20.

 
Don't even know most of these people, but Trent Dilfer was just terrible.  Notably terrible.  He didn't deserve to win a Super Bowl or have a national TV job

I can`t even stand watching the ESPN highlights anymore. I guess they feel the need to pump in more music while showing great plays.  Would rather just see the plays described. "Get off my lawn!!"

Dilfer was horrid. I mean if you wanted a breakdown of why a QB threw interceptions or just plain sucked, yeah he's an expert at that, but he still was horrid doing that. 

 
Other than actual games being broadcasted, there's no need for espn as a network. 

Highlights?  watch them on the internet

Radio?  Podcasts are better

Specialized networks are the present and future -- NFL network, Mlb network, etc...

Unsubscribed the podcast because Kanell was so horrible.  Have listened to Russillo since his NBA podcast days.

Dilfer was great at giving you a lengthy, detailed, authoritative analysis of exactly why Blaine Gabbert was going to be a great NFL player or why Cam Newton was going to be a bust.

 
Lebrun is great, him and Stark are two WTF ones for me. Dumping their hockey staff mid-playoffs is so ESPN. Can't imagine there's much reason for anyone to have an insider subscription any more.

 
Dallas Braden, Doug Glanville and Raul Ibanez gone

First two simply weren't good at what they do. If anyone ever had a look for radio, it's Braden.

Glanville was just boring.

Ibanez seemed to be working out pretty well, getting his footing. Will probably find work easily.

 
Well, looks like they still kept most of the 800 people they have covering the NFL. Good thing they got rid of most of their MLB and NHL guys so they can keep all the NFL blowhards.

Pretty much sums up these three exactly.

 
FWIW they're also moving their ESPNU production facilities from Charlotte to Bristol.  I can't see many people wanting to move with them seeing what they did to their college sports reporters.

So the big areas that got axes:

  • College sports both basketball and football
  • local reporters
  • AM Sportscenter hosts
  • MLB both on-air talent and reporters
  • NHL
  • ESPN.com in general
So expect a lot more NFL and NBA coverage and a lot more nationalizing of college sports (i.e. expect even more of the bluebloods).  I can't say that I particularly blame them from going this route, but if you aren't into the NFL/NBA there's a lot less reason to watch them or go to their web presence today.
