ESPN's day 3 coverage killing NFLN's (1 Viewer)

The first two days I didn't think either network's actual coverage was much better than the other.

But it's really noticeable how Mike Mayock losing his voice and not being available is killing NFLN's coverage. I've been watching both networks since around noon. Not just flipping, but pausing one and going to watch the other, then coming back and watching coverage on the same set of picks made, and fast forwarding through commercials and draft diaries and fluff pieces from both networks like on Myron Rolle (no offense to him or anyone else, but during the draft I want to hear about the NFL impact of draft picks during the draft, not learn about people's life stories).

If you want to see draft grades, hear interesting stories from Charles Davis and Mack Brown, discussions about things NFL, talk about trades... NFL Network's broadcast has been great. It's been enjoyable to listen to and worthwhile. But it's also 80% the kind of info they could have done in an after the draft show and only 20% draft coverage.

ESPN actually covered the draft today. They totally blew away NFLN in that regard. ESPN is discussing most of the picks in some detail while NFLN half the time would just put up a list of the last 10 picks and maybe mention two or three of them and the rest, all the info you got was just seeing their name on the screen and where they were picked.

Both networks could do with fewer GM or coach interviews and fewer fluff pieces in my opinion, and more coverage about the players still being selected. But NFLN's coverage of the players has been a fraction of what ESPN is providing. I'll also add the crew that ESPN has is much superior to the group ESPN had on the coverage for the first two days, which probably brings them back on par with NFLN in that regard. The ESPN group the first 2 days did get really annoying.

Corey Chavous IMO doesn't get enough coverage on NFLN or pub in general, I could listen to him talk about each pick all day. I watched Russ Lande/Cecil Lammey for the most part on the first 2 days and they were peerless for complete draft coverage.

Man, I couldn't stand Chavous. Too each their own...Watched very little coverage today, so hopefully it was better on both ESPN and NFLN, because I thought it was atrocious overall on both networks.

Agreed, Chavous is money. He and Charles Davis are a nice pairing with each other. You get a lot of great discussion and debate without it being two guys trying to shout the other one down.

Minute I saw Kiper, McShay, and Jaws, I knew I wasn't watching NFLN.Great job for ESPN on Day 3.
If Steve Young wants to come back next year he should be forced to watch today's coverage 8-10 times.
And make his head even bigger as gets to see just how much face time he got on TV and then hear's the news that ESPN's ratings for the draft coverage were through the roof? Don't feed his ego.

Case in point about about NFLN reviewing the draft and not actually covering the events that were happening. After starting this thread I went back and just watched NFLN between 2:40 and 3:10. There was a discussion on what teams didn't fill their draft needs, a discussion on interesting things about the 2010 draft to watch going forward, and a grading of the Bears draft. In that time they put the names of 5 players picked on the screen and Eisen mentioned one of them went to the 49ers, which you could see by reading it yourself so there was nothing beneficial shared. And that was the extent of any discussion of the actual draft selections that were going on in that half hour, until finally the Texans took a player in the 7th that Mayock had listed as a 2nd rounder, which they felt was worthwhile to discuss.

I was looking forward to Kiper and Jaws, but I don't like McShay and changed back to NFLN half way through the 4th.

I enjoyed Davis and Chavous.

I don't agree. Cahvous is pretty good and it is nice to see him back.

Mayock had to move over to the internet because of his hoarse voice and he the best on either network.

Steve Young is always best before games at the stadium not behind a desk.

As a Seahawk fan it doesn't make sense to watch either one. It always seems to go like this:

And the Seahawks are on the clock, we'll be back after these messages.

*commercial break*

Welcome back and don't forget that in 10 minutes we'll be interviewing some guy you don't care about. We'll be right back.

*commercial break*

Welcome back, the Seahawks pick is in and the Chargers are on the clock. Lets talk about the chargers for 10 minutes.

Rinse.

Repeat.

Now I just drink alone and look at my computer.

Maybe in the past, but the Hawks were one of the few teams in which they showed Goodell make the pick at the podium in Round 2...on which ever network I was watching

Bummer, because you missed NFLN and ESPN do everything except give Carroll a happy ending. Seahawks got a LOT of love this year.

I agree. WTF was going on with Jim Mora yelling at Tom Waddle for criticizing a team's draft (I think Buffalo?) for not filling all of their spots of need. Charles asked for a team that didn't do that well, so Waddle tries to break it down and Mora's like "Don't you think that these teams know what they're doing? Every team in this league has a plan and they will get it done." To Waddle's discredit, he hemmed and hawed around after that and then in the next segment said that he would make sure to be positive because he was negative before. TErrible.

Watched more NFLN than ESPN, but the one thing that drove me nuts yesterday was several of them (even Mayock) talking over the selections. It seemed the first day and early second day they made a conscious decision to stop talking when a team was to make a pick, then after awhile on day two they just said "screw it," and at least 4 or 5 times I remember them talking over the selections. I'm like, "WTF PEOPLE?! QUIT TALKING!"

Would have been a perfect time for Waddle to say the 'guys in charge screw up all the time, that's why you're here, right Jim?'I wouldn't have blamed him a bit.

Agreed on NFLN really sucking today. I dont know if Mayock was there if it wouldnt have been different or not, but they barely talked about the players who got drafted after the first half of the 4th. You couldnt have paid me to watch ESPN over NFLN on thursday or friday, but it was easily better today.

Oh, and I'll be the 6th or so person to say Corey Chavous is great

Exactly, ESPN should keep Berman and Young far away form the Draft. ESPN today was leaps and bounds better.
I've long ago come to a belief that a lot of ESPN bashing happens just because it seems fashionable to a lot of people to rip on broadcasters, announcers, media experts, etc.But this is one time I agree. Though I actually thought Berman was ok this year. He played it pretty straight, didn't go into his shtick very often. But they needed to muzzle Young. He dominated the talk way too much. And I'm really sad to say that Tom Jackson, who has for years been one of my favorite commentators, is starting to sound senile both in how he talks and in what he says. Gruden is decent but all of his praise of everyone he discusses can wear thin a couple of hours into a broadcast of this type.I like the dynamic between Kiper and McShay. Even if it bugs the hell out of Kiper having McShay around. Or maybe because of it, I'm not sure. I think ESPN should migrate Trey Wingo towards becoming their next face of ESPN to replace Berman eventually. He isn't shtick, he's just a solid commentator that doesn't seem to grate on me.
