Everyone stay safe (1 Viewer)

I know this is a little sappy and corny, but everyone please be safe at work and during your commutes.

Pay attention to what you are doing, don't text and drive and all the other cliche things you can think of.

My husband can home from work today after a half a day because someone on the job site died, and while he is safe, it still rattled him a little and it bothered me knowing that it could have been him.

We all have people that love us and need us, try to remember that through out your day.

On the texting subject, it really is horrifying how many people are texting, reading, etc on their phone while they drive. I keep my head on a swivel when entering intersections, and just while driving in general. #### those people.

I agree with the premise of the thread, people just don't pay attention like they used to.  Even if they are not glued to their phone they seem eternally distracted, especially dangerous in a big city where you are always one step away from death.

I just want to piggyback onto this for a minute.  When your light turns green it doesn't mean floor it and go, you really need to check the intersection first to make sure some knucklehead isn't running the light.  It's becoming more and more common that I'm seeing this.  Be damn careful out there!

The United States has the unwanted lead in this problem, far exceeding similar accidents in other countries around the world. An astounding 69% of drivers (aged 18-64) in the U.S. admitted to using their cell phone while driving during the previous month. Compare this to a European low of 29% in the United Kingdom or 59% in Portugal. Our country takes the lead in other potential distractions also, including reading or sending text messages or email messages, at 31% U.S. vs. 15% in Spain.

There are many links showing nearly everyone does it.

happened to me very recently...I had the green arrow to make a left, and as I started to go a dude appeared from the left, not even powering through the red, pretty much at a normal speed... and as I incredulously watched him, noticed he was looking down...drew my own conclusions.  Head always on a swivel at an intersection.

Eating and driving is a huge problem too. It's distracted driving, but with a drive through in every fast food restaurant, it gets overlooked.

Always be vigilant.  People just aren't paying attention out there.  The same people who would be terrified to run a bulldozer have no problem going 10x the speed in a car while texting and smoking.

Was it the incident at the new arena?

It's all distracted driving.  I went to a safety seminar a few years ago, research shows that talking on a hands free phone is bad as well.  Presenter had slides showing brain scans of a normal driver, hands free phone driver, texting driver and drunk driver.  Texting and drunk scans were similar and talking on phone showed significant distraction as well.  It was a pretty powerful presentation.

And yet a lot of states have banned texting and driving for teens, but not for adults.

Tell that to all the morons wandering the streets of NYC with their eyes glued down at their phones. Each of them is begging to be hit by a bus.

Not condoning drunk driving, but texting is worse IMO. Eyes completely off the road.

I am always extra careful in the car and at the construction site.  I already started a texting and driving thread, it seems everyone is distracted, yet I am the moron when I honk a guy texting in front of me that almost ditches off the side of the road.  eating and driving, reading, applying makeup, talking on phone, smoking.  cars should just be made of rubber nowadays.

Aren't they calling this a suicide now?
They are leaning that way, but it seems more like speculation after reading the article.

They point to no signs of an outward fall, but my husband said he was on the cat walk on a ladder that was taller than the railing.

The story also said he didn't seem to have the injuries of a man that fell that far, almost like he was bracing for a fall.

The story said he was in cardiac arrest, which makes me wonder if that happened before he fell and caused the fall.

The story also said he had no safety equipment on, but the other workers who responded might have taken it off.

A lot of what if's right now, I am suspicious when a report comes out this quickly after the accident. Either they have evidence they haven't shared yet, or they are denying things for liability reasons. Hopefully the truth comes out.

Saw a good ad campaign recently where they played loud skid screech while people were crossing the street.  When they got across there was a billboard thing with their scared poopless faces with a "walk aware" message or something.

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind our single FBGs to wrap it up. She may look clean, but there are all sorts of infections out there that don't wash off with a little penicillin. Remember fellas -- no tarp, no carp.

Was just coming in to post about NYC pedestrians. Bad enough on the sidewalks where face in phone person will run down other pedestrians. But same people wander out into the bike lanes and even streets without looking up.

For that matter, I've seen way too many people on bikes looking at their phones. Wtf.

Truly is a tragedy regardless of if it was suicide, some sort of workplace accident, or a health condition that led to him falling.  I echo your sentiments that you mentioned in the original post starting this thread--it was very well written.  Sometimes we take things for granted--and being safe and acting in a safe manner is something that we are all probably guilty of neglecting to do from time to time.   I also agree with you on the quick jump to a conclusion that this particular accident was most likely a suicide.  Out here in SoCal (Downtown LA to be more specific)--they are building the Wilshire Grand hotel.  It's a skyrise building and the construction site is pretty massive. Several months ago--there was an incident where one of the workers fell off of the building--landed on the street--and apparently hit the ground and the rear portion of a vehicle.  Needless to say--the driver of that vehicle was very traumatized by the scene--but also very lucky to be alive.  In any case--I thought it was very suspicious that they ruled the death to be a suicide very quickly after hit happened.   It almost felt like that conclusion was made in a very hasty fashion in order to keep construction going--as even minor delays in these huge projects could cost millions of dollars.   I'm certainly not saying or concluding that suicide didn't occur in either of these tragedies--but I fully agree that the speed that they are ruled suicides is eyebrow raising to say the least.
