Farve to Report this Weekend (1 Viewer)

The other issue here is the long term responsibility Thompson and Murphy have. The reality is Favre is 3-5 in his last 8 playoff starts dating back to 2002. He is not the same cold weather qb he once was. They guy is 39. How many more good years does he have? What if Rodgers leaves after next season (while never starting a game for the Packers) and turns into a Pro-Bowler with another team, while Favre slowly regresses the next two years?

The front office is trying to avoid falling into oblivion once Favre leaves. Additionally, we all need to remember how long the "will he, won't he" retire stuff has been going on. He was doing this when Sherman was the coach. How are you supposed to draft and approach free agency every year when you don't know who your qb is going to be.
I was just curious....what was Rodgers' career playoff record again? How about his career regular season record in the games he has started/finished? ;) This is a TOTAL case where Packer-Backers HAVE to dwell on those five playoff losses because of what Favre's done off the field. However, if Favre had said after the Giants loss that he'd be back to kick ### and take no prisoners in 2008, all we'd be hearing about is those three wins and the "living legend." ;)

The Vets obviously like Favre, but I heard Ruvell Martin and James Jones both speak highly of Rodgers and "allude" to the fact that it eould not be fair for him to be bumped to second string again.
I think Ruvell Martin and James Jones ought to prove something in the NFL first before anybody gives a rat's a** what they think. And I like Jones for what it's worth.
It doesn't matter what they have proved, they are on the Packers team and an example of players siding with Rodgers.
Until his first interception, fumble or injury.....

I hope the Bucs don't give too much for him. I would think a 5th rounder and Chrissy Simms would be sufficient. btw, I am interested to see if Simms actually shows up.

It sure is taking a long time to get those reinstatement papers to the Commish. Can't be that difficult in this age of technology. Stop the poker game. Fish or cut bait, Favre. And I'll stop the mixed metaphors.

I am telling you what multiple media sources are reporting for the motivation the front office has. My thinking is you have to be in the playoffs to go 3-5. The guy still got them there. The 3 reasons commonly reported for the Packer position are:1.) recent playoff record/effect of cold weather on his older body

2.) their fedup with the soap opera every off-season

3.) they feel his play will decline this year

They also want to move on to the future, but they were still willing to take him back in March.

Just reported the Jets have received permission from the Packers to speak with Favre. Let's hope this turns into a bidding war.
could he just say no I am not going there ? I can't see him wanting to play for the jets anyways....
HUH? It's NEW YORK.. They have an improved OL, RB depth, decent WR's and an up and coming Defense...Not only do I see him wanting to go there but, I can see it as his #1 spot right now especially with GB prefering he go to the AFC.And as a Jets fan, I haven't been the biggest Farve fan over the years... But, with the QB's we're looking at right now I say DO IT!!!! IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Yup, the legend is dead. Even before this happened Favre was not a top 3 and maybe not a top 5 Legend in Green Bay.Lambeau, Lombardi, Starr just to mention 3 that are above him.

Mike Francesca of WFAN is saying he met with Jets management earlier in the week and they were still debating whether to make a move. Hasn't talked to them since, but if they decided to proceed they wanted to first ask for a meeting with Favre (before negotiations) to assess his interest in the team and whether he'll play more than one year; won't pursue for 1 year.

its also cold and windy in NY and they won 4 games last year, that was my reasoning. I don't know if they run the same wco or not I guess.

As a Jets homer I have mixed feelings about this. One, I think FAvre is undoubtedly an upgrade at the QB position, something that may push them into the playoffs. Since they have built up their FA signings this offseason, this would fit into the "win now" sentiment, whether the Jets say that or not. However, the other part of me says this will render Chad useless and stunt the growth of Clemens. The growth of Clemens concerns me more, since we don't know if he can lead this team or not. Favre is not the long term answer, obviously, and the Jets desperately need to have some stability long term. I can't imagine the Jets getting Favre for peanuts, therefore compounding the effect this deal would have on their franchise's future. I want to win now, I just am not sure this is what's best for the Jets.

I believe his contract gives him the right to approve or reject any trade.
The obvious reason the Packers would allow a team to speak directly with a player is so these issues can be worked out before the trade is made.

Do you think GB is concerned that whomever they trade Favre to does not turn around and trade him back into the NFC North? Is that a possible scenario in any shape or form?

He will be traded by tomorrow night. As far as the divided locker room, I think alot more of the players are for Rodgers than people think. Favre didn't even use the locker room. The guy completely removed himself from the team. If you think about, this is the youngest team in the league. Woodson and Harris are really the only old veterans on this team. These guys can relate to Rodgers who is their age, they hang out with Rodgers, and they want to be relevant for the next 5 years not next season.
I would agree with that. Of course one could strongly add that the only that should matter is getting to the Super Bowl and this may be their last realistic shot to do so in the next five years. If the players are favoring Rodgers, that tells me they aren't thinking in the team's best interests in terms of what it will take to win big. I'm not sure anybody is at this point given how this has just become a giant p*****g match that has gotten way out of control. All that being said, I expect Favre to be traded very soon.
Total p$$sing match. The funny thing is everyone expects Thompson to do what is best for the team (which fans and media are divided on), but Favre has no desire to do what is right for the team. He is jerking the organization and his teammates around. Even if Favre comes back to start, do you really think this whole soap opera won't have an effect on this season? Divided locker room, dissention between Favre and front office, division amongst fans, anger from some fans towards Favre, media questions and speculation all year. This will be such a circus if Favre stays on this team.
Being a Bear fan this is a dream come true. The more turmoil the better. And let's see what Packer fans say when Rodgers gets hurt in game three and Brian Brohm has to start the rest of the season. This Farve fiasco definitely makes the Vikings the favorite to win the division, regardless of whether they get Farve or not. If Farve was the Packers starter I think it would be a horse race. It will be nice to finally not have to be facing Farve twice a year.
I totally agree with you. The most entertaining offseason in a very, very long time. The only thing I disagree with you about is that Rodgers might not survive training camp, let alone a month's worth of games. Trade him to the Bucs, and lose to Favre then. Let all the fans come to week 1 at home against the Vikings with their tickets that have Favre's face printed on them. Hilarious.

McCarthy has said the same thing and I think it is entirely non-controversial. Of course it would not be fair to Rodgers to accept Favre back under these circumstances. That's not to say it can't happen - life and football are sometimes unfair.

Do you think GB is concerned that whomever they trade Favre to does not turn around and trade him back into the NFC North? Is that a possible scenario in any shape or form?
I would think they would work this into the details of the trade to prevent him from going to Minny. This is really the main reason the Packers don't have much leverage. If they are too picky, and don't move him fast enough they will either be stuck with the 12 mil hit, or be forced to release him with the high possibility of him staying in the NFC North. It's good to be the Jets or Bucs right now. I am sure the Jets / Bucs have been talking.

The Packers will put a provisions in any trade that will make it very undesirable for any team to do it. (ie - if you trade Favre to the Vikings, we get your next 8 first round picks, etc)

Not exactly. The Packers can trade him to whomever they like, but he can simply choose to not report to their TC, and then his rights revert back to the Packers. Rinse, repeat.

This is merely what Packer fans are praying will happen, not at all which makes it likely. A team will not allow trade for a commodity that he doesn't recieve full reign over how they want to deal with it. The Packers are the ones who have to move Favre, other teams do not need him as much as the Packers need to be rid of him.

Jake Plummer's rights belong to the Bucs, no?

Do you seriously believe this?

It'll be in there, guaranteed.

I have to admit it's been awhile since I've spent time in the SP, and some of you guys are not disappointing me at all.

Right move by Brett. This puts the pressure back on Thompson.
i think so too
Why is the pressure on Thompson? All he has to do is accept him back and have him play behind Rodgers like he originally stated. They need some inurance behinf Rodgers. I wonder what Brett would do then? Retire again??
Lets see. The better QB shows up and plays. Rodgers is no Brett. Even if Rodgers gets the start out of the gate, my expectations is no less than a playoff spot. Tough first game vs VIkings and boom, Brett comes in there and stays on for the remainder of year. You either say we are going with Brett or trade/release him in the end. Thompson must do something because the longer this goes on, the negative impact it will have on Rodgers and it could cost him his job. He must react IMO, immediately. The longer he waits, the more of a locker issue it becomes, the more presure it puts on Aaron(one thing to follow a legend but another to follow with the legend behind you and more than capable of replacing you) and the more it affects the fans and there thought process. The fans are willing to move on(I want Brett to stay myself but also see the reason for going to Aaron even if he only has 2 years on his contract and could be gone anyways) but the more they see of Brett, the more things rekindle. So the fans start to get behind Brett but Thompson waits to the end and releases him and Rodgers sucks. Thompson is done. Act now while the fans are behind it and understand. Even if my wishes are to keep Brett, I know that something has to happen now. One way or another. I just think Brett gives them best chance to equal or beat last year. In Brett's shoes, I do what I did. The ball is back in Thompson's corner now as if Brett had waited and done this like 3 weeks later, than Thompson would have been in a pickle but easier to release him at this point as not much time to learn new system. If he waited till the season started, than Brett would have been in a pickle as real easy for Thompson to release him and not have him come back to haunt them until mid-season

At the same time...if alot of the younger players think that...there is alot of youth on that team...and those are the guys who the team will be relying on in the future...so TT has to take all of it into consideration. This is why I have said over and over that its not just as simple as "who is the best QB".
Of course not. Stop thinking 1 year at a time you guys. This is about the long term interests of the team.

man I hate Brett Favre
I'm starting to maybe kinda like him :goodposting: Broadway Brett
As a fellow Jets fan, I need to ask you this: are you not at all concerned about the long-term ramifications to the organization? We will likely be drafting QB early again if Favre signs on. Are you that down on our QBs? With a good surrounding cast, Pennington is effective. Clemens has yet to be given the reigns, and I guess I am in the minority, but I feel he could be OK this year, and better going forward. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

If Brett reports & the Packers don't trade him, Favre will be backing up Aaron.

I enjoy the circus

Jets are my "local" team ,which I'll reconsider if Favre signs on, so you could say I'm not a true fan. Regardless, I'd say this move casts doubts on their faith in Clemens. Pennington is not a long-term answer and they're only interested in Favre if he'll play more than one season.

I'd be willing to bet that Farve has a no-trade clause in his contract. And his salary is $12 million dollars. How many teams would have that much open under the cap? My guess is he will have to be willing to renegotiate his contract wherever he goes.

I'm a huge homer but, I really think this team doesn't have any glaring holes anywhere near the hole at QB.... Well, and depth.I'm fine with taking next years #1 and drafting a QB. You can also look at other Vets to sign at this point.Wonder if any $$$$ can be saved by getting rid of Chad.

Can't they just bar him from the facility even if he decides to report? The Titans did that with McNair before moving him to Baltimore. I would just do that while they try to work out a deal for him. Keep him out of the locker room, if possible, to avoid the problem altogether. It's clear the Packers don't want him playing for them this year anyway, so why have him cause a distraction by coming into camp.

The Titans violated the CBA when they did that to McNair.

From a live chat with Tom Silverstein going on right now over at JSOnline:Q: Ken of Birmingham - Sorry if this is a dumb question, but here goes: Let's say the Packers trade Favre to an AFC team...is there anything to stop that team from turning right around and trading Favre to the Vikings or Bears? Or to anyone else for that matter?

A: Tom Silverstein - The Packers would include a clause in the trade that would make it almost impossible for the other team to trade him. There would be no worry of that.

If I were TT, I would look to move Favre as far from the Packers as possible, as quickly as possible. A sixth round pick would be more then enough for me to dump him.

I was NOT a Favre hater before all of this

Favre: Not Interested in Talking About Jets, Bucs

July 25, 2008 by sfhayes

Stranger and stranger. Chris Mortensen reported that Ted Thompson and Brett Favre spoke yesterday and that Favre told Thompson he planned to report to camp. Thompson told Favre that both the Bucaneers and Jets were interested in trading for him and, according to Mortensen, Favre was “not interested” in talking about those trades.

If Favre refuses to be traded to a playoff contender like Tampa Bay, he will confirm the growing suspicions many of us have that he orchestrated this entire thing so that he could play for the Vikings.

Favre burned the bridge by trashing Thompson in his Fox news interview. He is still complaining about the Wahle and Rivera release (Thompson was completely right on that), and their failure to trade for Moss. This team went 13-3 and were a Favre interception away from going to the Super Bowl, and Favre is bashing the GM.
I would not say Thompson was completely right on Wahle.
:headbang:

Another train of thought on this is that, very rarely, does the man replacing the man turn into the man. There is a school of thought that Brohm will eventually be the Packers "quarterback of the future" and Rodgers is really just a transistion guy, who will take the heat, criticism, etc, and then be moved when Brohm is ready. I continue to say this but, minus Clifton, Tauscher, Woodson, and Harris, this team is incredibly young everywhere else (wr, rb, fb, te, lb, safety, majority of ol). All of that needs to be taken into consideration. It is no guarantee that another year or two with Favre gets them anywhere.

I am really starting to think this is very personal on Favre's side. For some reason he has incredible animosity towards Thompson. Does anyone else get the the feeling Favre is just trying to stick to the Packer's as much as he can.

Actually history says he won't.

You guys really think Favre is the only reason the team hasn't done as well in the playoffs? I think the reason is more likely the only reason the Packers got to the playoffs was because of Favre, and the supporting cast wasn't up to the task in the playoffs. It's not like Favre single-handidly lost any of those games. And you can't look at just the last play of the game to make your decisions, although of course those memories stick out more than a fumble along the way, blown coverage in 1st half, etc...

Remember when the Packers defense couldn't stop the Eagles on 4th & 26? I guess that was Favre's fault too. And yeah, the game against NYG last year ended in an interception, but there were ton's of mistakes made by the team all throughout that game. I blame McCarthy on only practicing inside, and not making his team practice outside. Every game in cold weather last year the Packer's just looked miserable (and were lucky they had Favre to lead them back against seattle in the playoffs). The Packers as a whole aren't a cold weather team anymore and I think that is from the McCarthy refusing to practice outdoors, the cold is just as foreign to them as any visiting team right now.

Brett Favre's recent history in the playoffs, sure. Elway won a superbow at the very end of his career with a very talented team, so I think you're assuming the grapes are already sour.

Awesome. This is going to be a whole lot of fun for everyone but Packers fans.

Actually history says he won't.
Brett Favre's recent history in the playoffs, sure. Elway won a superbow at the very end of his career with a very talented team, so I think you're assuming the grapes are already sour.
I am just assuming the percentages. All I am saying is everyone thinks Favre is the man again, based on last year (which was a great season). The 2 years before that everyone thought he was done and should hang it up. Favre has repeatedly said he is tired, and doesn't like the preparation, practice, game file analysis, etc. Who knows what type of year the guy will have.

Why can't he? If he really digs his heels in, he'll end up starting in Green Bay or Minnesota. For as unpopular as he currently is, he has a lot of power in this whole thing.

It is also opening everyone's eyes up to the incredible ego that he has hidden all these years.
