Faulk's force fumble counts as DT/ST points... (1 Viewer)

I see that CBS has called Faulk's force fumble and Watson's fumble recovery a DT/ST play. Is that correct? My opponents DT/ST wasn't in the game? I saw someone post that once the offense fumbles and the defense recovers, then they switch roles. But if that's the case, why is it considered a defensive TD on a "pick 6." Or a special teams TD on a punt/kickoff return? The loss doesn't really matter since I've locked up the bye. I just want to understand the rules better.

The only way the offensive gets credit for "defensive" fantasy scoring is on a play with two changes of possession. On any of the plays you mentioned, the ball switched possession only one time.

This is the "Keenan McCardell Rule" all over again (except without the TD).

In 2003, MyFantasyLeague ruled that it was NOT a D/ST touchdown, but rather an "Offensive Fumble Recovery TD". MFL justified their ruling by explaining that since the NFL distinguished between different types of Fumble Recovery TDs, so should they. Most fantasy services followed suit and created a "Keenan McCardell Rule" to address the situation.

Interestingly, MFL also ruled that the Fumble Recovery would still be credited to the D/ST -- but only because the NFL does NOT make a distinction between different types of Fumble Recoveries.

But as MFL explained at the time, "This does NOT mean that we feel this was a DEFENSIVE fumble recovery. It merely means that he has a fumble recovery for the team and your league may have awarded this to the DT position. You can always use the Score Adjuster to account for this discrepancy."

So in the very least, you have a legitimate argument to take 2 points away from the New England D/ST.

I think the worst problem here is that the BAL DST does not recieve a FL. That goes to the IDP. In IDP leagues it makes sense but in DST leagues I don't see why the D's don't get a FL.

Exactly. Normally, every turnover has an equal number of positive and negative points (-2 for the QB, +2 for the D/ST). But this situation brings up yet another question, which is: who does get the final 2 points?:Brady -2

Reed (or BAL D/ST) +2

Watson (or NE D/ST) +2

You can't give the 2 points to the NE D/ST, because they weren't on the field. But you can't give the points to Watson either, because offensive players can't get points for FRs......or can they??

Mainly tradition, I guess. Offensive players score points through yardage, catches, and touchdowns. They don't score points from tackles, fumble recoveries, etc.

Once the ball changes possession, he is no loger KM WR, but KM DB.

At that point, you score like any other kind of return TD.

(In our league, individual players do get the 6 for a return TD, so it didn't matter)

I also agree that the DST should get -2 fot a FL.

I await the day when the blight on FF call "Keenan McCardell Rule" is obliterated in a torrent of logic and comprehension.

this is why I don't pay for DST leagues... all my Money leagues are IDP

But they "become" the Defense on a change of possession.

In my Yahoo league where we play one DB and one DL, offensive players earn 0.5 pts for a tackle when it ends up coming on an INT or fumble return. There wasn't even an option to turn this off once it was added as a category for the IDPs.
