Favorite sad song? Do you have a good one that gives you chills? (1 Viewer)

Damage- David Sylvian + Robert Fripp  ("why couldn't I stay... earthbound, starblind, tied to someone")

June- IDLES (I can't even listen to this one... it's about the death of the singer's child during childbirth)

When I saw the thread I leaned back in my chair for a few moments to see what immediately came to mind. There were a handful or so and this was one of them.   I'm curious which obvious ones I missed and forcing myself to top out at 5 edited out some other want-to's, but these elicit a chill every time I listen to them and bridge multiple genres.

Caroline's Spine - Sullivan

Eminem - Stan

Tool - The Patient

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night?

Taxi : Harry Chapin

YGuts me every time. Feel for Harry as he's flying high and getting stoned.
Last line is a total gut punch. Though not nearly as well known, Mike Errico's "When She Walks By" has a similar "Ohhhhhhh s##t!" moment at the very end as the narrator realizes that at least his wasted life can serve as a warning to others.

Mary Gauthier's "I Drink" is a super-depressing first-hand account of alcoholism. It's been covered by a bunch of country artists, including Blake Shelton, but her stripped down acoustic guitar and sparse vocals really underscore the narrative of the song.

But my go-to for saddest song ever is Iris DeMent's "No Time to Cry". The notion of being so overwhelmed with all of your day-to-day responsibilities that you can't even find a moment to grieve a parent's death is just devastating.

Some great choices here, and heartbreaking stories.

I'd add James McMurtry's South Dakota, about a kid getting out of the army only to be told when he returns home to S. Dakota he may as well re-up cause there's nothing there for him. McMurtry's one of my favorite storytellers.  From the same album, Cutter, about someone who cuts themselves to keep the pain away.

More of a punk lineup here....

Franklin by Paramore. Song about outgrowing your roots and growing up. Melancholy but very calming song. This was off their first album when they were like 20 and in their emo phase, but the song itself isn't particularly emo, so I always found it a really interesting addition to the album.

Very obviously Blink 182's Adam's Song. I think most people know Blink, yall probably know the song.

And as to the "chill-inducing" one in the OP, I'll throw in Help Is On The Way by the always politically minded Rise Against, written as a scathing criticism of the FEMA response (or lack thereof) to Hurricane Katrina, and also touches on the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The music video takes the song's impact to an entirely new level.

Love sad/emo songs. Favorites are:

1. Screaming Infidelities - Dashboard Confessional

2. Hate Me - Blue October

3. I will Follow You Into the Dark - Death Cab (already mentioned in OP - we also used the instrumental at my wedding)

Just remembered another "final line gut punch": Steve Earle's anti-death penalty song "Ellis Unit One", about a guard on Texas' Death Row:

Last night I dreamed that I woke up with straps across my chest
And something cold and black pullin' through my lungs
And even Jesus couldn't save me though I know he did his best
But he don't live on Ellis Unit One

This is far more about my personal situation than anything inherent to the song itself, but a month after my father-in-law died from Covid, someone posted on Facebook a video of a children's chorus singing "Memories". The juxtaposition of these bright, talented kids singing about pain and loss got me right in the feels, as the youngs say.

Here's where it gets even weirder: I had never heard the song before, so I did some research and realized it was by Maroon 5; my father-in-law was a huge Adam Levine fan. What's more, Levine wrote it after the sudden death of his manager/best friend, Jordy Feldstein (brother to Jonah Hill and Beanie Feldstein); the Feldsteins are close family friends of my wife's aunt and uncle.

Empirically speaking, I don't think it's all that great of a song, but every time I hear that opening guitar riff it takes me back.

I'm pretty sure it's a cover, but I've never heard the original so I can't compare the two, but Pearl Jam's Last Kiss really struck a chord with me the first time I heard it on the radio.

Ben Folds Five - The Luckiest

I cannot listen to this song without shedding a tear.  Part of it is personal to me because the first time I heard this song was right after I lost both my grandparents within a very short time and the 3rd verse talks about exactly that.  Gets me every dang time.

Speaking of BFF, I don't know if "Brick" is sad, but it sure is depressing as hell. Thankfully, I've never been in the position of actually having to take a girlfriend to get an abortion, but hearing that song instantly transports me to a time and place: It's a cold, gray 1990s day in the Northeast, I have to take care of this very unpleasant task, all the conversations are awkward, etc. I can't think of any song that affects me that way.

The combination of Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days by Tool get me emotional quite often.

As much as I love listening to Tool albums from start to finish—often times when I listened to that album I’d skip those songs. It wasn’t because I didn’t like them—it was because I just didn’t feel like getting my emotions that heavy on that particular listen.

Another honorable mention for me is Lightning Crashes by Live.  While the song doesn’t get me emotionally heavy like the Tool songs I mentioned—I just feel like this is just a good song that happens to have sadness scattered throughout the lyrics.

Back in High school I made a mix tape( yea, I'm old)...

Side A was "when you have the one you love".

Side B was "when you've lost the one you love"

This song from Judas Priest was a show stopper of side B

Here come the Tears.    :(

2 phenomenal adds.

Sad in a good way.   A song I play on the guitar that I heard Jack Johnson play called Spring Wind by Greg Brown.

This part chokes me up every time.

"Children go to sleep now-
You know it's gettin' late
I know you don't like to miss nothin'
And school ain't that great
Oh, I'll dance with you when you're happy
And hold you when you're sad
And hope you know how glad I am
Just to be you're Dad"

For some reason there are always onions being cut when I watch this video.  When the kid falls in the water trying to get the photo album.  Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven is another video that hits on a different level (about veterans and how they are treated/cope with life back home) and then follow that up with Gone Away (group of friends join the army, only one makes it back)

Pretty much anything from Blue October when Justin was in the middle/after his divorce.   The start of "For the Love" when Blue says "Cause I want to stay with you.."

He’s got a song titled If My Mary Were Here. Played the hell out of it when my high school GF, conveniently named Mary, broke up with me after she graduated.

Peter, Paul and Mary - Puff the Magic Dragon

Expose - I'll never get over you getting over me

Dan Fogelberg - Same Auld Lang Syne and Leader of the band

Lightning Crashes is a good call.

If we are are going strictly lyrics then “The Way” by Fastball.

Worry list- gets me every time, as a dad that went through a divorce where my ex moved my daughter 2 hours away.  Blue October is good stuff but you have to be in the right frame of mind for some of it.

Pink Floyd- Wish you were here

Drop kick murphys- Wish you were here

Badflower- Family

3 Days Grace- Lifetime (my best friend was a huge fan of this band, he passed away a couple years ago) Watch the video as it is a tribute to the people of Mayfield KY made after a tornado decimated the town.

Blue October- as previously mentioned “Worry list” gets me every time.  Justin’s been through some tough times.
