favorite 'techno' song... or (4 Viewers)

Believe it or not, I got into Tech/Breaks my Freshman year of college in '92-'93, and started to frequent the clubs in Orland, FL. I used to listen to Kimball Collins at Oz...or Aahz, I would be curious if we have any folks on this board from that scene. Things exploded in about 1994 and DJ Icey...used to go by Icee, he really exploded the Florida Breaks scene with a series of records he releades on Zone.

I used to run the nightclub known as the Firestone in Orlando during 1995-1996 on Saturday Nights...we had a otn of DJs from all over the world. I have to say that most of the records back then, many were simply released on what is known as white labels...meaning there was no record label or anything to indicate where the record originated. Most DJs were trying to break thru and would simply print anywhere form 50-250 records and then ship them out to the better known DJs so they could throw them down in the clubs they toured in.

I owned 1200s for a long time and I have a lot of respect for those that can actually mix without the aids of CD mixers and whatnot.

I have no idea what is good and what isn't anymore. I tend to like TechHouse more than any other genre and still like groups such as Green Velvet, not sure if anyone listens to them. Favorite DJ in the last couple years is a chap from the other side of the pond known as Evil" Eddie Richards...that guy is awesome on the tables. I find most of the music you can buy on major labels and in regular stores like Virgin and such is pretty bland although I know certain DJs produce some good stuff on major labels like Sasha, John Digweed, I like the Global Underground label, that's pretty alright.

But most of the major DJs like Oakenfold are boring to me. There is a guy that goes by the name of DJ Monk and is part of the Halluci-nation label that Rabbit in the Moon are on. He used to be aprt of that entity but now that is strictly Dave Chirstopher and Bunny or Steve if anyone was wondering who he is...youtube has a lot of Rabbit in the Moon clips. Monk is a superb Break/Jungle mix and I really enjoy getting to listen to him when he has his full set up including video clips to play behind him.

I got to see the Dust brothers premiere in Orlando in 1994 IIRC...could be 1995 too, and they were insane, they of course eventually became the Chemical Brothers.

Josh Wink was always a personal favorite as well.

I can think of a lot of songs but I have no way to list what they are, most are simply locked in my head. Rabbit in the Moon, Hardkiss Brothers, Afrika Bambata, all good stuff.

Wasn't sure if this was worth a new thread, but I saw Air in San Francisco last week and that show was awesome. Fantastic band, amazing sound quality, and good lighting to boot.
Saw them in DC about 2 years ago (maybe more). Nice small venue (9:30 Club) and it was awesome stuff.

I'm headed up to SF this weekend. Looks like Van Dyk is at a 1015 Folsom. Is that a venue that's worth checking out? I've googled it and read mixed reviews. Back in the early part of this decade, I'd go to the local landfill to see and hear a Van Dyk set. Now, I'm a little more discriminate.

Been to 1015, fun place but nothing like what it was around 2000...better in the 1st part of this decade for sure, but I would say if you like Van Dyke, you'll like Folsum. I saw Mark Farina there several times.

I spent a lot of time in that place in the late '90s. It's a fairly big club that gets very crowded on the main floor.I have not been there in about 7 years so I can't really comment on what it is like right now.

They have always booked the top tier DJs and that's primarily the reason I would go there. If that's what you want to hear, you may as well go for it.

The club was decent, I would probably give it mixed reviews myself, some good times and no real bad times. You really have to want to be in a club but if you are going for the music, that's a pretty good reason.

Alright, I may go check it out. It's going to be a little hike as I'll be staying in Palo Alto though. Is there anything near that area which has a good house/electronic night this Saturday? I only have 1 rule--no hip hop.Are we all about the same age here (~30), or did the good days of electronica seemingly die back around 2000-01? Seemed like right after 9/11 (don't think that's a coincidence), the whole scene took a step back. The good techno clubs in Phoenix both shut down right around then. :goodposting:

I haven't lived in San Francisco since 2000 so I can't really comment on the scene right now..I am sure a lot has changed and there are new places, so Im not gonna be much help. Not much in Palo Alto though I know. Definately head to SF.

Here's one site for listings Also pick up SF Weekly or the Guardian newspapers for listings.

Do you know Eli?Ever heard of breaks/techno club in Orlando called Thee Grotto? It's not open any longer, but that's where I'd go whenever I was in Orlando.

I worked under Bevin at Firestone. But I seem to rmember a promoter that went by Eli too. I mostly went to the Edge in the early mid 90s till that became a Cowboy bar, then Firestone...there was JJ Whispers too...and Aahz of course. Thee Grotto might have been a little after my time...in about 1997 I went back to Tampa and worked at Eden for awhile, then when the ATF came in and forced all clubs in Tampa to close once they were thru serving liquor...pretty much ended all the fun. A few warehouse parties here and there but mostly small house type parties, nothing like the early and mid 90s really.

i'm going to see DJ Heather tonight.

Chitown style funky jackin MFin house. :lmao:

I'm a big fan of electronic music. Mostly house and all it's variations.

Great link! thanks for passing it along

I enjoy anything by Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, Basement Jaxx are pretty good, Aphex Twin has some amazing tracks - Windowlicker, Film, Boy Girl Song, etc..

I also love some Hapy hardcore, like the Nintendo remixes and stuff. That's sweet.

Anyone ever jam any Benny Benassi? A couple others that I listen to once in a while are Ladytron and Fischerspooner.

I used to go down to the Electronic Music festival in Detroit at Hart Plaza each year, but have done that in a while now.. Heck, I assume it's still an annual event, but I think it lost some of it's momentum over the past 4-5 years.

They used to get some great DJs down there and they had something like 5 or 6 different stages going on, too. Saw Carl Cox and several other "pioneers" of the techno music scene back in the day.

every year, i look at the lineup at Detroit to consider a trip up there, but every year seems more disappointing than the previous. i'm more of a trance/house kind of guy though, so it goes without saying i should probably consider the miami event before i get too old.

great song! and the video is even better.

wow.
Huh, I thought this was really bad - back to the old days of techno that seemed to be intentionally irritating. There was a cool Caribbean-sounding section in the middle that I liked, but it was followed by another beepboop irritating bit.

Check out Miss Kittin if you can. Jammed to the "Bugged Out Mix" last night. Quality stuff. It's technically not inidividual songs as much as Miss Kittin spinnin'. There are two disks - day and night - each after about 70+ minutes long and great headphone material.

As for a particular song.. One that my wife and I like is Bellini's Samba De Janeiro. Reminds me of a night at CocoBongo in Cancun. Fun times.

Joonas Hahmo - Together

I ####### LOVE this song.

It's got kind of a mellow vibe to it.....reminds me of one of my all time favorite songs "Halcyon On & On".

Finding this huge library of Pete Tong essential mixes is like finding the dead sea scrolls of electronica.

If you're new to this genre, start here and discover what you like. I've presorted them by "Most Playlisted". With 769 different mixes, the users in-the-know have sorted it out from best to worst.

Enjoy.

I don't know about you guys, but I like more of the trance stuff type. Especially the ones with female vocals. Such as:

4 Strings

Andain - Beautiful Things

Ferry Corsten - It's Time

Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes

:tinfoilhat:
:excited:

Ferry Corsten in general is very good. L.E.F. and Right of Way are fantastic albums. I'm also digging the album Paul Oakenfold - A Lively Mind. GREAT songs on that one.

Not completely sure if this fits into this catagory, but I was recently introduced to "Thievery Corporation"... has a bit more of a funk/raggae/electronica vibe to it... very nice. Check out these two tracks to see if you like them...- Warning Shots- Lebanese Blonde
huge fan of TC and other "downtempo" or "chillout" music:AirMorcheebaMassive AttackLebanese Blonde is a real keeper - mmmm sitar
Dude, just picked up Moon Safari by Air. What a great chillout album. All I Need is awesome, and the sounds in Kelly Watch the Stars are rediculous.
