FBG Gardening Thread - 2025 (1 Viewer)

We just did a full remodel of the backyard including landscaping. We’ve got ground squirrels non stop munching on our new sod. Coming from our neighbors stack of firewood along our adjoining wall. We’ve put mesh fencing from the bottom up 4 feet feet ourselves but they laughed at that. Cayenne pepper hasn’t worked, nor has putting reflecting ribbon, music that they supposedly hate. Etc. Hate to get more aggressive than those steps but I’m about to. Any suggestions?
Bucket and beer can trap. This can be a live trap or lethal. We use a diy at our cabin for mice, works like a charm. Will also work for chipmunks, ground squirrels, most rodents.

I would get an owl.

First year with a real garden all wrapped up. I'm gonna chalk this one up as a learning year, had some wins and had some losses. Critters were my biggest enemy so preventing them big and little will be the goal next year.

Got plans to try and expand a bit and probably try a 25' greenhouse for critter control and extending the growing season. For all the headaches i enjoyed the process and food you harvest yourself just tastes better.

Still getting lots of apples which are being turned into applesauce and canned. Mushroom foraging was awful this year and outside of two giant puffballs i was pretty much skunked. Deer season is in full swing and as the weather gets cooler I'm hoping for some success and a full freezer. After that it's wait till March and make maple syrup (best ive ever had was what i made last year), then get planning for next season.

I don’t have a garden, but I do incorporate edible plants into the landscaping:

Pecan tree

Peach tree

Mexican apple (aka Turks cap) in the flower beds

Rosemary in the flower beds

Okra down the driveway along the fence

Fig tree

Blackberries

Mint in container

Thinking about adding a Yaupon tree, only North American plant that produces caffeine. Would be interesting to have some yaupon tea.
