TCM is also having an interesting thing on a week from Tuesday 3/24. They're showing a documentary about Alice Guy-Blaché, the first female movie director and one of the first people to make a narrative film, then showing a couple of her features

Watching Leave No Trace and it is definitely a social distancing movie. Like distancing yourself all the way out.

Right. Take a look at the movies on Netflix, what looks like a funny group watch? @KarmaPolice suggested Any Given Sunday since we are missing sports and Pacino is like a blue ribbon winning pig with the quality and quantity of ham he is able to put on screen.
I mean we could do a "sports" overacting and go Any Given Sunday + Rounders with Pacino and Malkovich going toe to toe.

There are more serious sports movies on NF like Hoosiers, Miracle, The Natural, Ali, Raging Bull, High Flying Bird.   Docs like Beyond the Mat, Icarus, Team Foxcatcher, Iverson.   Or just completely silly like Major League 2, Semi Pro, Nacho Libre, Goon, Kingpin.

I'd personally be interested in these. I loved the 30 for 30 series they did, which had one on Iverson, IIRC. The Two Escobars is actually one of the better sports docs I'd ever seen, and even though it was a 30 for 30 was a feature length.

We watched Hobbs and Shaw this weekend because it was new on HBO and we wanted something mindless to watch.  It was very dumb but the first hour was really entertaining (except that the McGuffin was a lethal virus :X )   The story ran out of places to go in the second half but the filmmakers did invoke the classic village defense set piece from Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven to kick off the ridiculously long climactic battle between good and evil.

So the plan KP and I decided on is to stick with the March pairings. If when April comes and we are still on lock down than we will look at doing something special for April.

Don't forget to check out the movies this month. I've seen Leave No Trace and will watch Wendy and Lucy this weekend.

SOCIAL DISTANCING!!!

I will try to do it this weekend. I watched the trailer for Wendy and Lucy. I am a little worried it is going to be super sad. I expect some drama but I do not want to see something bad happen to the dog. I also don't want to see her be the victim of some piece of ####. Yeah, I just came up with all of that from the trailer. I will try to watch it and hope I am wrong.

To be fair, I suggested those movies before most of this #### went down.  Might not be the light escapist movies that some people are looking for right now, and I am sure that will be corrected for the next couple.  Understand fully if people want to take this one off.

(I haven't watched either yet, so that is not any indicator on what either of these movies are like...)

Can someone who has seen Wendy and Lucy tell me on a scale of 1-10 how depressing it is?

If the dog dies or she is raped it is an automatic 10 for me.

* I really do want to watch this movie. I am just not sure if I can deal with real sadness right now. I could probably handle a 5 on the depression scale, maybe.

I will watch it this weekend and give you a score. Leave No Trace is definitely not a 10. It's sad but also there is hope and self discovery. It is not violent.

here's your capsule:

pretty faithful representation of a lost day on the road for a broke girl beyond tears. nothing especially tragic occurs. those who've been stuck before wont be informed, only reminded how a little can mean a lot and a lot mean nothing in those circumstances.

Somebody please let me know if a dog dies in either film.

No dog dies in without a trace
Dog doesn't perish in W & L as near as I can recall.

I have seen a few Kelly Reichhardt films and she is an acquired taste, I think. It requires a kind of patience that other auteurs not named Tarkovsky, Bela Tarr or Jarmusch don't ask of the audience.

Hopefully I got most of everyone who has chimed in here. Sports are gone and social lives will be on hold. I added a couple questions to the poll here seeing if spending some more time watching movies and talking about them here is something people are interested in? Stay healthy everyone.
Heya, thanks for the shout out and well wishes. 😎👍

Sorry that I'm late to the party. 😞

Unfortunately, I'm not gonna be able to participate for a while. But, things are "ok" on my front - just busy.

Since I got nada on movies, I just wanted to say that I hope everyone is well. You are all on my mind.

I'll be back when things settle down here.

❤️

Great to hear from you.  Thanks for the well wishes and they are certainly returned to you tenfold.

IF we ever did that, it has to be for something that's not usually our typical movie club fare, right?  Talking during Wendy and Lucy is different than talking during Fast Five.

Yes, I know the entire Lethal Weapon series will be added to Netflix on April 1st

Come Monday, I think am going to start a thread that's a daily conversation piece centered around art/entertainment. It might be an album or a movie or an author or something I feel is interesting and can help us pass the time. Each day, something new and irrelevant. I hope that many of those here can participate since you are generally a rather sharp and affable gang.

Been thinking of you, GB. Glad to hear that things are well.

I will pose one question that is not a spoiler and has been bothering me.

In the opening scene Wendy and Lucy are walking and playing fetch with a stick. It is being filmed from the woods and the camera is keeping pace with them. You can hear someone humming a tune. The humming is loud and meant to be heard. It is not Wendy humming. I do think it was a women humming.

Who is humming?

Are we supposed to think someone is watching them from the woods?

I was a little surprised that this was never addressed at the time or later in the film.

i believe the director was using Wendy's "pounding the pavement" humsong as soundtrack there to get us into the transient mindspace at the base of the story

I wish to live in a world which finds Leave No Trace as compelling as Infinity War. There's really not much more to say.
I eagerly anticipate your insight on this one
