FFA In Death Spiral? (2 Viewers)

We're definitely in a bad cycle in terms of the quality of the most frequent posters. A lot of the interesting people left.  I don't want to get into the GM thread effect because people take it personally but that's a huge reason for the decline in quality.  I agree on the lack of threads per page as well. With all of the giant page one threads that rarely fall far from the top it's almost impossible to for anything new and interesting to last more than a day.  I still start my day with a quick scan of the board to see what's going on but more often than not I see nothing and move on to other places. I've recently started posting on reddit and had back to back to back 3000+ point posts.  I enjoy the score keeping aspect over there.  No idea what it means but getting points is fun.

In all seriousness though, the FFA is still my favorite online destination. And other than the 70 or 80 people I have on ignore, I love you all very, very much.

Being that "Higgs" is only a member for 3 months, who were you before?
Good try.  Not at all relevant what my prior ID was.  Been a loyal customer here since the cheatsheets days and have brought a lot of people in here over the years.  I don't have any aliases either - it's just me.  Genuinely interested in seeing this place get better.  Really do enjoy the back and forth with you guys.  Have probably come across as a royal ##### at times but some of it was really necessary I think.  Hopefully that's all behind us now.

Ok.

While I agree on the "25 threads per page thing", I have to think "how sorry are we" that we can't exert enough want to in order to go to page two and look further for 5 seconds. But that's the way the world is going, like it or not, and I'm doing the same thing.

The "SNARK pool" has pretty much pushed me out of those waters. I agree with those saying its just too much trolling, not enough good info. I'm not into mining for an hour to find one relevant, good piece of story that I can discuss.

I know for a fact that if my job didn't plant me in front of a screen all day and offer me the down time to post, I'd never be here. At one time, I would have made time to be here to get FF knowledge but its not the edge it was and I can get it elsewhere if I am even interested.  I rarely check in outside of work hours and I never use my phone for this site. I was unaware of the buggy phone stuff altogether.

It's probably another one of those things in my life that I am transitioning from. A change in job will probably end me pretty cut and dry from here.

I've mostly given up because I find the atmosphere in the FFA to be meaner and less interesting.

And there's a handful of people I simply cannot stand any longer.

You can doubt me all you want.  Truth is - been a lurker in the FFA and Shark Pool forever.  My user ID was always for the site content and only changed when I moved last year.  Never had an alias either.  Nor do I have any now.  How many others can say that?

Can we return photo/video/gif abilities only to the Kids Getting Owned thread?  That would be great.

Also, it's been over 10 years, for most complainers.

Everything was better when you first came here, right?  Just like music was better when you were a kid, right?

Its funny, I seem to be opposite of everyone.

This is really the only site on the Internet that i go to anymore. If I want to know about news, I come here. If its not in here, I dont know about it. I dont read the news papers, I dont watch local or nightly news.

So if the FFA doesnt have a thread on a topic, it might as well not have happened in my life.

They've needed a separate political forum for a decade. At least open it up during election years. They have one for baseball for Christs sake.

Quote system is AWFUL.

Yes, it is because we want to know who we are talking to. Are you MasterOfOrion/Golddigger, Bueno, gocolts, Clinton, or another incarnation of someone banned mutliple times? IDs are absoutely relevant to a discussion forum.

2. The quote bug annoys the heck out of me on my phone. I could go and post in a thread that I replied to last week and my quote from last week still pops up and is impossible to delete. I end up giving up and not posting at all.
I cant tell you how many times this has happened. Ive figured out how to remove the week old quotes but its far to counter intuitive or complicated for my old ### to figure how to quote multiple people and/or quotes.

That's exactly the same for me.  For the last 14 years or so.  For the most part this forum replaced my old yahoo homepage where I used to check in to see what was going on in the world.  Would like to see more people posting links to good articles and reports, and less of the nonsense.

The no pics thing is hilariously stupid. I will never be able to stop laughing at the fact that they asked for the software to be changed to accommodate a request back to 1998.
This. All this.

Removing pics and videos effectively has murdered the Football Manager thread. Look to before Aaron showed up and you'll see an active, fun thread. Now it's just me and Gator posting. Embedded pics/videos were about the only good thing of the new board.

The quote bug thing is also a pain in the ###. I mean, you can still post the quote then delete the thread, but it's annoying as heck.

Mid-day, mid-week and we only have 45 members on this board. No wonder more and more people are abandoning this place for social media.

Ban the people who whine like 4 year olds (this would also drastically reduce the Trump/political threads) and bring back pictures!

In all seriousness, because I do agree that the FFA has been in a downward spiral the last couple of years, here's my take on why participation is way down:

  • Personal attacks - seems to have always been a problem here, but the last year or so it's gotten pretty toxic.  Grown adults should be able to talk about controversial political and social topics without trolling and name calling.  Disagree with the position, but respect the poster.  That should be a requirement in here.  If you can't give a Trump supporter the minimum amount of respect then you are probably too immature to engage in this type of forum.
  • Moderation needs to be ramped up - This forum has shown the complete inability to self moderate, which is a difficult thing to begin with and usually requires a pretty tight knit community.  In the absence of there needs to be a clear code of conduct in here with Mods that enforce it fairly.  I know it's a thankless job and they probably don't even get paid, but it's vital to a well functioning forum.  Also, the Mods need to explain why someone has been suspended so people can learn what they did wrong.  The last two timeouts I got were both head scratchers, and despite repeated attempts for an explanation none of my emails requests were even acknowledged.
  • Agree with some of the things mentioned above above the new website functionality, especially the quote glitch on mobile.  Royal pain.  Also, pictures and videos would really be nice, though I can understand and appreciate Joe's concerns with this.
  • Aliases - get rid of them to the extent that you can.  People use them to troll no do things they normally wouldn't do if they only had one handle.
Hopefully with a th a little bit of refocus we can make this place great again.  I've been reading a lot of you for many years, and though I don't always agree with everything said in here, I do appreciate all the different viewpoints and collective wisdom that is expressed in here.
So, what is your real username?

Suddenly I'm a fan of the quote bug

Having been here since Old Yeller (just barely) I will say this place has definitely changed over the years.  Some things for the better, some not so much.  This was a clique fest for years, and I feel that has gone down the last few years.  But, as some of those posters have left, or don't post as much, the quality of posted material has declined somewhat.  I think there is still some stuff that is great to read, you just have to work a little harder sometimes.

And not having a political forum is nonsensical.

It was a good run...longer than Happy Days.

Also, the actual content is getting more and more boring as posters get older. Topics are about politics, retirement, elder children, divorce, etc etc when they used to be more about hooking up, partying, poop in ceilings, colon blow diaries, other fun stuff, etc etc.

Just the way it is I guess.

Using my Samsung Galaxy S4 and I can delete all the text but not the quote box.
When you tap the quoted text box do you see a little box appear in the top left corner of the box? If that thing doesn't show up you can't delete the quoted text.

Would think it wouldn't be a phone issue but who knows

:lmao:  at the anti-Higgs crowd.
I'm just trying to identify who he is

Has a lengthy post where he complains about the lack of moderation and too many aliases, accompanied by how the place has gone downhill over the last several years (yet has only been a member for 3 months).

So strange.. That is the exact phone I have and it works for me.. cumbersome, but works...

Wait..

What browser are you using on the phone?

I'm using Chrome.

Anybody who posts with the frequency he does is not the type to have been lurking for years and not participating.

The fact that he won't give his prior ID speaks volumes.

Hippo had some Classic threads going..

Anyone remember the one in regards to how the Janitor's on his floor were Spanish so he decided to place items outside his cube labeled Basura and it sat there for weeks??

His continuous updates had me :lmao: during the whole fiasco.

upgrade was awful. I can't find anything and when I do the pages are too short to scroll, the nested quotes are gone so it's hard to follow a conversation.

I won't be missed but I'm basically done here.
Was looking for you in the Masters pool thread...

That's another aspect of this.  We are getting older, and less interesting.  And, hate to say it - more crotchety.

At some point you have to take some responsibility for your hand in this and quit playing the victim.  Do I agree that you shouldn't be bombarded by the anti-Trump crowd every time you post?  Yes.  But you also have an "ignore" feature that you consciously choose not to use.

A few weeks back I was getting into spats with Card Trader and dfsguy.  After a couple of go-rounds, I realized I kept allowing myself to get roped in.  That was my problem, not theirs.  Ever since the "ignore" function was enabled, no issues.
