FFA In Death Spiral? (1 Viewer)

Was that also confirmed by the two mods in the test forum who said Tone and I were the same person?

Considering that Higgs has admitted on numerous occasions that he indeed was General Tso, your track record at identifying alias accounts leaves something to be desired.
Higgs is Tso, though there are subtle differences.

Not true. As Tso he used to at least try to make sound arguments and was somewhat respectful to people he disagreed with. Now he has morphed into a complete troll and it is nothing but insults, rolling/laughing emojis and ridiculing anyone who dares to question his cherry picked polls or stats or outlier studies.

Detective Squitter with an obsession on aliases.  It goes back over a year too earlier in this thread.  Get a life.  Or a new pigeon

I think he just tired of banging his head into a brick wall. And things weren't as personal a year-and-a-half ago. Even my intemperate self has noticed sort of a hostility here that's a little weird, squistion. I'm a pretty combative guy, and even I back off a bit from otherwise speaking.

Higgs is Tso, dude. What do you want squis to do?
Everyone knows this and has known it for a long time.  Squis makes a point about it almost every single day.  He's obsessed with the guy.  Why doesn't Squitter list all of Tanner's aliases?   Or tell us who other aliases like Dedfin and CoffeeTime are?

Oh, okay. Fair enough. I think he doesn't know, frankly. It's not like they have...

a secret...

facebook page.

And therein lies the issue. I was on FBG at like Midnight this weekend and there were 8 people here with me.

In the old days, that's when things used to get jumping on here. Things were posted that the mods had to quickly delete the next day. I mean, every  Sunday morning the FFA was like the aftermath of a blowout bachelor party and the FBG Mods would have to clean the place up from the debauchery.

Now all we have are never-ending Trump threads.

Been here a long time it always got dead late. Years ago when I worked swings I would come.in to a mostly empty forum.

So true.  Nowadays the only late night action seems to be me and @Doctor Detroit beating the #### out of each other.

May as well rename this place Political Guys Dot Com

Even the damn dating threads go weeks or months between updates.  Hell, the dudes could just straight out make #### up and we'd all eat it up.  The only thing I have to look forward to anymore in this place are the daily @AAABatteries selfies.

Same as day 1.

There are currently about 2000 pages of multiple trump threads on the front page at all times.  Another 369 page thread on gambling, not to be confused with the 661 page thread on ufc gambling, the 341 page thread on pro wrestling,

114 pages of boxing,  79 pages of hockey playoffs,  150 on living in New York, 137 pages on visiting Las Vegas, 622 pages about video games,  and a 16 page thread on a music draft I'm not participating in.  There's also a 47 page thread on a tv show I don't happen to watch, 120 pages on videos to rent, and 305 pages of people saying I ran today. Great job. I ran too. Great job.

That doesn't include the hundreds of mega threads that dominate the front page and keep new content from taking foot.. when a new thread does start,  it's usually bumped down by these behemoths,  and the spin off political threads like the ones one the front page right now.

That pushes away the casual reader.  I barely even skim the front page of the ffa anymore.  It's depressing to read.

90% of the posts in this latest bump are people who mostly post on politics threads talking about people who mostly post in politics threads.

Think about that.  This place is overgrown.  The front page got smaller and politics got bigger and nobody reined it in. It sucks here now and it was all avoidable but nobody wanted to do anything about it and now it's too late.

Aside from the Trump, that sounds pretty diverse, actually.

On the plus side, people love your thread. Even Limp conceded, and that's rare. There's something about concision and pith that's a talent.

:shrugs:

Oh, and my ad thread is now on page two? Bummer. I already saw it tonight.

So what you're saying is that we need more yoga pants threads?

Everything Trump needs to be put into one thread. The other day there were 5 Trump threads on the front page. It is ruining the forum.

"Trumps thread about nothing, Trumps thread about everything" would be a nice start.

Dam..I miss the bacon days...

How about just a political forum - it's been suggested for years.

Ehh. There would still be one giant political thread in the FFA run by a ######## with douchy thread title updates every few days. See the fact that there is a NBA thread in the FFA as opposed to the basketball forum.

It's 6:15, one thread was posted in 6 minutes ago, but the next soonest is an hour.  We need to recruit more Australian bros to keep this place alive in the wee hours.  Plus they have kangaroos, koalas, drop bears, and other cool (but very deadly) animals to talk about.

I don't think it's the content.

It's the users. There isn't much young blood as far as I can tell.

Generation X had the message boards, because that's what we had.

There's a whole lot of new ways for people to communicate now that we didn't have when we all found FBG message boards.

In addition to the lack of younger posters, the existing posters have gotten older, busier, and frankly less interesting.

The death of the message boards here had nothing to do with political threads, come on. Is the Shark Pool dead for the same reason? Of course not.

There's more political threads because we are getting older and pay more attention now than we used to.  A community was built here and while there's new people coming in all the time my guess is they too are older.

I think the board software upgrade and the thread limit has more to do with any impact (real or imagined) - 5 or 10 political threads doesn't seem like much with 50 threads to choose from but when it's 25 it seems like a lot....and it's just basic human nature to not bother to go to the 2nd page.

The Neverending Life of a FBG poster by @bostonfred

Posted January 16, 2009 · Report post

1. Check out this site. They have free fantasy football emails.

2. Cool, they have a forum, too.

3. Free for all? Why would anyone post there when the Shark Pool is the only forum with useful information?

4. Heh, there was something funny in the FFA today. I guess I should read this more often.

5. I like reading the FFA, but I mostly come here for the Shark Pool

6. I find myself reading the FFA more than the Shark Pool, and I'm starting to recognize everyone's names and avatars

7. The Shark Pool has become unreadable.

8. I just realized I post so much in the FFA that people know me by my screen name.

9. Someone just mentioned an alias. I can't imagine why anyone would want to post under a second alias.

10. I wish I had a shtick. Maybe I'll try one.

11. Someone just copied my shtick. I'm mildly annoyed, but flattered.

12. I need an alias.

13. I think I might be posting too much here.

14. I just saw someone post a topic that I've already seen several times before. We've run out of new things to talk about.

15. People I've never even heard of are talking about something I don't understand.

16. The FFA has passed me by.

17. Someone just posted that they're quitting the board. Sounds difficult. I wonder if they'll do it.

18. Oh good lord. There are sideboards?

19. I finally broke down and went to one of them, and it has funny pictures.

20. I think I've finally figured out who all these aliai are.

21. I just read that post and realized that I posted that under an alias a long time ago.

22. Who are all these new people? Are they really new or just aliai?

23. The FFA has passed me by.

24. Oh no. It's almost football season, and all the Shark Pool guys are coming back.

25. Oh good. Football season's over. All the Shark Pool guys are gone.

26. Who are all these new people? Oh wait, this happened last year at the same time. Everyone's just posting under new aliai.

27. I've lost interest in figuring out which alias is who.

28. The FFA has passed me by.

29. OK, I've seriously been posting too much here. Time to post a thread saying I'm quitting.

30. Managed to quit for three days. I'll just stop by to read it for a little bit.

31. OK, I have to respond to THAT.

32. Nobody even noticed I was gone? For three whole days?

33. I'm starting my own thread about quitting the board.

34. That didn't work out like I'd hoped.

35. When did this board become a politics/religion/werewolf message board?

36. Someone just started a thread about something we've discussed a dozen times before, but for some reason I'm interested in it again.

37. Someone just started a thread about something we've discussed a dozen times before. Back to not being interested.

38. I think I'll just read instead of posting.

39. Someone I've never heard of just posted a thread saying they were quitting the FFA

40. The FFA has passed me by.

Types of poster

Lurker - doesn't create new threads,  but reads them and sometimes replies.  Doesn't get @ or replied to very often so when they do they see a notification and tend to reply to the reply.  That's how you get long arguments between posters who usually don't interact.  Also very conducive to political threads.  May become part of a smaller community/mega thread like the running thread (i ran today. Great job! Thanks!  You're welcome!) or gambling thread (I bet 2 units on the giant bears! Why? Because they are like normal bears but bigger.  I also like giant bears I will bet on them too! Hey we won great call)

Repliers - should be the majority of the post volume in a healthy board.  These are the guys who skim the front page and find lots of threads to reply to. They might just post pithy one liners like @Leroy Hoard or tell stories like @wikkidpissah or have a specific shtick everyone likes like @SWC These are the most important guys because the vetting process for threads is replies,  and they are the ones who keep the best content moving to the top.

Board "celebrities" - not totally critical to the success of the board, but close. These are the long term posters who almost everyone likes.  If you see a thread started by @General Malaise or @shuke you check it out. If you see that @fatguyinalittlecoat or @krista4 was the last person to reply in a thread you check it out. If it's @Frostillicus you might pass, because #### that guy. But you get the idea

Board "villains" - you can't have a good hero without a good villain.  The guys like bgp and lhucks are gone. @Woz used to revel in the role but he grew up and has turned into a good person which is frankly really upsetting. These aren't actually bad people - they're just the guys who post a lot and have a lightning rod persona for certain types of issues.  Someone might be a celebrity in one kind of thread and a villain in another. Think scupper, zippy, etc.

Thread creators - the guys who create the threads that keep the board active.  Lurkers sometimes make the leap right to thread starter and tend to get a lot of grief for it. Usually the thread repliers and board celebrities do the majority of this, and the thread villains do enough to keep the place interesting.

There are also a handful of topics we all seem to like here.  Politics.  Sports and gambling.  News and current events.  Science.  Pretty girls. Funny stories. Funny threads.  "Smart" threads like the old monks and dots riddle thread that stayed on the front page for weeks. Music threads.  Activity threads like running or weight loss. Draft threads. Entertainment threads about tv shows, movies, etc

So,  let's start with politics.  Do we have thread creators? Yes. Do we have lurkers? Repliers? Heroes and villains? Yes,  yes, yes. We seem to be covered.

Is the board conducive to politics lurkers and thread repliers?  Yes, the board really caters to them.  The threads get bumped to the top a lot,  when people reply and get quoted they see a little red notification,  when they get likes and quotes they get instant gratification from that little red number.

How about funny thread creators?  We don't do a good job with that at all. You put effort into creating a thread, and the mega threads bump it off the first page. The like system has replaced quoting people with lols and lmaos, so the threads get a few likes and fall off. You have to bump your own thread if you want it to get views or let it die because nobody saw it.

The board really doesn't reward the guys who create good new threads at all,  but it rewards the #### out of people who say over the top things in the politics threads. The front page isn't long enough to have all these mega threads and still have new content.

Three thing that keeps reddit vibrant is that the front page r/all shows the most popular and viral topics,  but the different sub forums have enough room on their front pages for topics to get views and generate interest. Maybe that's what's needed here.  If that can't or won't happen then a separate forum for politics - or for all the mega threads - would be nice.  There are real problems and  it seems like no real solutions are even being considered, so the board will die slowly instead of taking some risks and seeing if it can bounce back.

Now that Fred has designated me as a celebrity, some of you may wish to revise the "5 celebrities I'm allowed to bang" lists you negotiated with your spouses.
