Interesting. I would say that about the sequel (and definitely about The Spirit) but I felt the original Sin City had a good amount of substance to go with the style.

I think about 75% of those 5pters would qualify for that.
I hate Peter Jackson's King Kong so much. That has to be one of my least favorite movie experiences ever.

Did you try any of the other suggested docs? Murderball would probably be #2 on my list for the year.

After the last poll, I did entertain somehow opening it up to negative votes, but didn't want to go down that path. Mainly I was afraid that even fewer "artsy" movies would be on the countdown. We will just have it as a pour one out for otb_ one-off.

yeah... Sin City didn't do a lot for me. and I was SO disappointed about the Spirit- used to collect and love the comic book (reprints as well as newspaper comic section inserts). couldn't watch more than a few minutes of the movie.

No, I actually had seen a few from this year. More than probably any other year. Murderball is one I had seen and enjoyed a lot.

the woody allen one? I feel like he repeats himself thematically, and IMO this ground was already really well and better covered with Crimes and Misdemeanors. unless we're talking aobut a different Match Point.

I am big on documentaries. And many times great documentaries are based on horrible people.

Yes that film. I agree Woody Allen (and any writer/director with as many credits) covered similar ground over such a long career. I like Match Point more than C&M though. Full disclosure, I saw MP first though.

It's terrible...except for the parts with Kong. I don't mind the dinosaur fight or the skyscraper battle. And it was peak Naomi Watts.

Peak Watts is Mulholland Dr. I was just embarrassed for her watching the dancing for Kong scene.
I honestly don't remember how Kong looked, but I vividly remember thinking that the dino stampede was some of the worst CG I had ever seen in a movie (well, big budget one anyway).

Mostly because fanboys will go for flicks that mythologize the whimsy out of their archetypes as real movie people do exactly the opposite and have more respect for films which keep the cartoony aspects, like Sin City, than the self-important models of instant justice.
ETA: starting to feel toward a lot of FFA movieheads like i feel about Rush fans - almost self-disqualified by their love for the pretend-good favorites

Btw...Gilbert godfried's kids go to the same school as mine- it's all I can do not to shout The Aristocrats!! every time I see him. I'm sure he'd love that.

I have been thinking about this a bit along with looking at our schedule coming up and I have decided to slow it down a tad for the summer, and tweak this for selfish reasons. Yes, we are going to go one more week and I updated the thread title - lists for 2005 are due on 6/4 to avoid Memorial Day weekend. We are also going to run up against the 4th of July weekend and I think I am actually going to be away a couple weekends in July for concerts and such.
Now, combine that with the fact that now my son is going to be up later, and my personal movie watching will slow down. I started this for selfish reasons - to have a reason to watch movies that I haven't gotten to, and if that part gets taken away from me, I will lose interest. I don't want to miss stuff, especially with a strong looking year like 1971 coming up.
In another selfish move we are going to go farther back in time after 1971. I have been missing having time to watch classics as we are doing these, so to combat the onslaught of noisy CGI summer blockbusters, we are going to tackle the 1950s. If we lose people, or don't get as many lists, so be it - we will be back at newer stuff soon enough. I am HOPING that people will suggest stuff and take a chance on some classics if they don't think they will like them or haven't seen that many. I know I have a handful that I need to get to. @El Floppo - I guess that means I will finally be getting to Seven Samurai!!.
I am hesitant to release this, but just figured I should post a schedule so people know what's up and if they absolutely can't stand B&W movies, they know when to hop back on board. Again, PLEASE don't send me lists before I start up the thread for those years.
2005 - Lists due 6/3
1971 - Lists due 6/24
1950s - Lists due 7/15
1984 - Lists due 7/29
Looking at this on the calendar, I think this is a perfect summer pace. We avoid Memorial Day, 4th of July and I don't have to do math for lists on Father's Day.

I will really need some recommendations for 71 as I only have seen a 6 or 7 movies from that year. In return, I will be able to offer a lot of 50s suggestions for just about any genre. Filtering my list for a whole decade is going to be a real challenge.
