FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (3 Viewers)

The Wailing - Amazon Rental - This is one to add to your watchlists.  A Korean movie about a village undergoing random deaths and illness after a suspicious Japanese man moves into town.  First off, this movie is in Korean and subtitled, AND it's 2.5 hours long so there's a bit of effort required here.  You will be rewarded for the effort, however.  Paraphrasing from an IMDB review that put it best, "by slowly unveiling the real nature of certain characters, the last 45 minutes of the movie will change your perspective on the whole thing. Every few minutes you will switch sides when trying to determine whom to trust and only when the big reveal comes do you realize how detailed the setup to get there was.".  This movie will stick with you, having you asking lots of questions about the characters and their motivations.  The characters are portrayed well, especially the dad and his daughter.  I put this on my best of 2016 list.
Thanks for the write up Scoresman!  Now I know I'm watching this this weekend.

At the risk of sounding like my usual elitist self - Train To Busan is a thinking person's zombie movie.  World War Z it is not so if tons of action is your thing you might be bored.  It's even better if you are a parent.
Wanted to add to this that Train to Busan is the best zombie movie since the Dawn of the Dead remake and 28 Days Later.

Added this to my queue, but still not available on Netflix.  Will add it to the top as soon as I see it's available.

Troll Hunter - Amazon Prime - In the wilds of Norway, a documentary crew is looking for bear poachers but instead finds a professional troll hunter.  Sounds like a setup for a typical found footage movie, but this is one of the better ones I've seen recently. You'll learn all about trolls like how to attract or repel them (ie: they can smell if you're Christian which I found hilarious), different types of trolls, etc.  A lot of it is silly in that they're bringing fairy tale trolls into the real world, but they made it all incredibly believable, including the effects for the trolls.  This is a gem of found footage and the best movie so far in this month's crop.

I'm really hoping for a sequel.  My son and I ate this one up.  The trolls in the cave and the scene at the bridge were fantastic.  Fun movie.

Scores, have you seen The Host yet?  If not, you may like it.  The Korean creature feature btw, in case there is some other movie by that name.

Yes, Troll Hunter was a ton of fun.  Is Monsters on your list (couple tries to get out of Mexico after alien monsters invade Earth)?

Trollhunter is a great movie.  Non-American horror flicks are so much better than ones made in the States IMO.

I will just add to the Halloween discussion,  I really enjoyed part four and five. It continues the story arc pretty well. Michael was still imposing and seeing him lurking in the background thoughout  different scenes (even in the daylight) made it is even more scary.

The level of hot girls are off the charts in these two movies. It was the last real normal Michael Myers movie because then we got all the strange cult involvement in the next one.

I've seen Monsters and really liked it.  I couldn't believe they filmed that entire movie on a $500,000 budget.

My favorite foreign horror flick is probably Martyrs or Audition.

Agree, and I think that the Halloween movies did a decent job of putting out fairly good movies for the whole series.  It didn't jump the shark as badly as the Nightmare movies, Friday the 13th, and the others.

Yep Halloween IV is a personal favorite of mine. It was a really nice throwback to the original film with several nods to it. The Revenge of Michael Myers was initially a disappointment for me after how good The Return Of Michael Myers was. It felt really rushed and had some holes. But it grew on me over the years. Some of Donald's acting is so over the top it really adds to the charm of it all.

"Leave her......she will stabilize!!"

I know Donald was not happy with the direction of series starting with this film and then the disjointed mess that was Halloween VI The Curse Of Michael Myers. The original working title of that one was the Orgin Of Michael Myers. The producers cut though is so much better. It's actually night and day. I got it on blue ray from the box set I purchased from Shout factory. Even the soundtrack was totally different and was actually the classic halloween music from the first one. It made the film a lot more interesting and clearer in the plot. Still a weak entry overall but a much better vision. The studio really hacked that film up and made a mess of it.

you may know this but the second one is called The Collection...it is on amazon but not for free

man i hate when #### like this happens:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsmJ5-LgiZ0

it's similar to every time i look through channels and i see the movie "28 days" and i get excited, and then realize that it isn't "28 days later" or "28 weeks later"

But i'm also so glad you guys mentioned this. one of the best horror movies i have seen in awhile, and was so glad this was it. I couldn't remember the name of the movie for the life of me and wanted to catch it again for over a year

Krampus:

Fun idea, and it had a couple laughs, but in the end it was just too neutered and pg-13 to to really hold my interest or be good in the end.  I usually don't like pg-13 horror in general, but they can be done well: The Ring, The Others, etc..  Obviously it wasn't going for that tone, but because of the rating they held back on the jokes and nastiness, and it didn't have scares, so it's definitely meh at best.  That said, it might be a good 'starter' horror movie as some of us start introducing our kids to the genre.

Scream:

Not sure what to do with this one.  Still really like this one, but I think some of greatness has worn off as there have been a lot of horror/comedy movies that have build on this and improved on it.  This this is one is best viewed through the lens of what it meant to the genre overall and specifically in the 90s.  Don't get me wrong, it still holds up, I think I maybe have just gotten too old to hang out with these kids for 90+ mins.  Now I would much rather pop in Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale, Behind the Mask, or a few others poke fun at the genre while still being a great entry in the genre.  I have only seen it once, but I do remember thinking #4 did a decent job with the story and was pleasantly surprised after a disappointing 3rd installment.

Exhibit A - Amazon Video - A found footage movie about a girl who receives a camera which she uses to film her family slowly falling apart due to financial pressure.  A very underrated found footage film.  No gore, no jump scares, this is a kind of horror that could be lurking in any middle class home.  It's rare that a movie is actually made better by FF format and this is one of those movies.  Also helping are the performances of the family members.  These people could easily be your neighbors.  The father especially is portrayed incredibly well.  His slow unraveling is hard to watch once it gets to the terrifying end stage.

2 reviews today to get ahead of pace since I have a packed weekend.

The Linda Vista Project - Amazon (but who cares since you won't watch this movie) - A girl and a film crew have some sort of job where they work in an abandoned mental institution recording ghosts and a guy comes along wanting to tear down the building.  At least I think that's what it's all about.  Basically, what happens if you take a porno, get rid of the sex, but leave in the bad acting, horrible script, and nonsensical plot?  You get this movie.  Oh and add in really bad 90s era sci-fi channel special effects. This movie was a waste of 90 minutes.   I actually did think this was going to be a soft core porno at first.  The lead actress is a bimbo with big #### who plays some sort of clairvoyant.  The camera woman is another bimbo and they would've made a good lesbo scene together.  Then the new building owner walks in and he has that male porn actor look totally down.  I kept waiting for the music and action to kick in, but all I got was a limp **** and a waste of a spot on my October list.   I'd be amazed if I see another movie worse than this this month.

The Vatican Tapes - Amazon Video - Priests at the Vatican are convinced that the devil is returning to earth and investigate a woman's possession in connection.  This one starts out as a typical possession/exorcism movie and a rather boring one at that.  It truly baffles me that no possession movie can even come close to matching what I think is the scariest movie of all time The Exorcist.  This movie does redeem itself a bit at the end, however.  The ending goes in a slightly different direction from your typical Exorcism movie.  I daresay I may even be interested in a sequel because of it.  That said, this isnt a terribly interesting or scary movie.

Thanks, will check it out.

Watched two with the lad this week, Re-Animator which was mentioned earlier and Creepshow.  He and I liked them both.

Re-Animator is such cheesy good fun, with over the top gore, buckets of stage blood and oodles of lol dialogue and setups.  I had never seen this before so I'm glad I checked it off the list.  It's a good time horror movie, if you know what I mean.

Creepshow is similar in that it is less straight horror and more irreverent creep.  I like the Danson/Nielson bit the best but the Adrian Barbeau one has a nice happy ending that made the boy laugh.

If you haven't seen them in awhile they are worth the rewatch.

"It's meteor ####!!" :lmao:

Gave in and purchased "The Collection" on bluray ($9.99). Really enjoyed it, but not quite as much as the 1st one.

Also watched "Wolfcop". Not as bad as it sounds and for the first time in my life I saw a mans penis transform into a werewolf's penis so there's that. More of a horror/comedy, its worth a watch if you are into these type of flicks.

Home Movie - another Found footage film I like. Available on Hulu or Shudder if you have that. Pretty disturbing in parts.

Pastor David Poe (Adrian Pasdar) and his psychologist wife, Clare (Cady McClain), have just relocated to Upstate New York with their young children, twins Jack (Austin Williams) and Emily (Amber Joy Williams). When Halloween inspires bizarre behavior in the twins, the Poes begin documenting their struggle to regain control over the children as their idyllic family life is torn apart by sociopathic -- and increasingly violent -- behavior.

Rolling along...

Deadgirl - Amazon (Shudder) - Two teenage boys find a tied up woman in an abandoned building who cannot die.  But who is the real monster, the "zombie" girl, or the boys? This was a disturbing movie to watch.  It's not scary in the traditional sense, but what the boys do to this woman is pretty ####ed up and also realistic in ways, which makes it even worse.  It was all very believable.  A very interesting take on the zombie genre.

Sleep Tight - Amazon (Shudder) - An apartment building's receptionist who cannot stand to see people happy does all he can to make the residents of the building miserable. Spanish with subtitles.  This one can barely be considered a horror movie, but it was very good.  The lead character suffering from depression to the point where he cannot stand to see the happy people in the building where he works was a fascinating character trait to watch on film.  The lengths he goes to to try and make people miserable is also very creepy.  Somehow, the movie has you rooting for him at times despite his despicable behavior.  I quite liked this one.

I like this one.

Watched the long awaited Phantasm V last night (rented it on Amazon Prime). My son and I are "Phan's" of the series. It's campy, horrible acting and what not. But the charm of the series and our 3 hero's (Reggie, Mike and Jody) is was what kept us in this series. The original film is a cult classic and part 2 was also excellent (on a huge big Hollywood budget and the only one to ever have it released in 1988). Part 3,4, and now the 5th and final entry were all straight to video sequels.

It was a nice send off and close to the series. Extremely low budget and they did a great job in that regard. This is for serious Phantasm fans only. If you do not fit that description don't bother.

My personal rankings of the series

1) Phantasm

2) Phantasm II

3) Phantasm III

4) Phantasm V Ravager

5) Phantasm IV

Reggie rules.

Didn't post yesterday, but I've kept on schedule so far.

Hostel - Amazon Rental - Three Americans travel to Slovakia and stay at a hostel that turns out to be hell for them.  I finally got around to watching this and thought it was just ok.  I thought the characters were rather weak and ultimately didnt care about what ends up happening to them.  Watching this after watching much better "torture porn" movies (ie: Martyrs which is in my top 10) just made this one fall a little flat.  I did like the whole murder-for-hire angle, however.

Willow Creek - Shudder - Bobcat Goldthwait directs this found footage movie about a couple going on a camping trip to try and find Bigfoot.  This one has its flaws, but is pretty good overall.  I feel like they spent too much time on the buiildup, interviewing locals/walking around town, etc.  This film is famous for a 21 minute long one-take scene inside a tent, and without spoiling anything, it works extremely well.  The ending goes in a strange direction, but ultimately this is not a bad movie overall.

Loving the writeups.  I personally would have Hostel a bit higher and Willow Creek a bit lower than you do though.  Keep it up- only 20 more to go!

Deathgasm:

HFS  this movie.   Loved damn near every minute of this movie.  Usually not a fan of the "it's X meets Y" descriptions of movies, but I'll do it anyway - it's a metal Jay & Silent Bob Evil Dead movie.  Over the top gore, tons of swearing and **** jokes, titty shots, metal music, and some "death" by dildo.  Basically, this movie was custom made for H.S. KP.  Just over the top fun in the vein of old Peter Jackson moives (fittingly the director does visual work for Jackson I believe), Evil Dead, Dead Snow, etc.   It does break down a bit, especially at the end as the low budget starts to show in some f/x shots, but still overall a blast.  I admittedly have a immature sense of humor, and I had tears in my eyes a couple times from laughing.  Watch it, already...

Adding this to my queue, thanks.

The Possession in Japan - Amazon Rental - Basically, Japan's take on the Exorcist.  A girl is possessed by a demon and a priest seeks her out to exorcise her.  I've watched a lot of international horror movies recently and this is the only one I've been disappointed with.  When I heard about this being Japan's take on the Exorcist I was hoping to see how another culture/religion would handle the topic of demonic possession.  I wanted to see how Buddhism or Shintoism would handle such a topic, but instead this is yet another Roman Catholic based exorcism movie (even though only 2% of Japan is Christian) and as such, really offers nothing new.  You also get no connection to the main protagonist since she is possessed right from the get-go.   There is a halfway decent twist at the end and it really isn't a horrible movie overall, just nothing terribly original here.

I owe the thread a few movies.

The Phoenix Tapes 97 - Amazon rental -  A group of campers goes missing during the Phoenix Lights incident of 1997.  It's a UFO based found footage style movie that isnt bad at all.  You've probably never heard of it.  I couldn't even find an IMDB page for it.  At just over an hour long, it doesnt overstay its welcome and the retro 90s feel the movie has was done well.  Worth the cheap rental if you like found footage, otherwise wait for it on prime.

A Lonely Place to Die - Shudder - A group of mountain climbers in Scotland find a young girl buried alive in the remote wilderness which sets off a strange chain of events.  This is more of an action thriller than horror to my surprise, in fact it's probably not horror at all but it's a very good, suspenseful movie.  The cinematography really stands out and most of the characters are really well written and acted.  Highly recommend, just note it's barely horror.

Daylight - Shudder - A group of Child Protective Services workers document reported cases of child abuse that eventually appear to be linked to demonic possession.  I have no idea how to review this movie.  It has some really good elements of horror and possession throughout, but I honestly have no idea what happens at the end of this movie.  It takes a sudden turn to WTF territory for the last 10 minutes or so.  I even checked the imdb forums and no one else seems to know what happened either.  There was a good concept here, it's a shame they took it in such a baffling and confusing direction.

Grotesque - Amazon/Shudder - A Japanese film about a sadistic doctor who kidnaps a young couple on their first date and tortures them to satisfy his depraved needs.  This is a very polarizing movie as most extreme torture horror movies are.  I liked this one because even though you only see the young couple for a few minutes before stuff starts going down, you can really identify and sympathize with them.  I feel this is a crucial element of torture horror.  If I don't care at all about the main characters (I'm looking at you, Hostel), there's no point.  The doctor is also acted incredibly well.  He has this cold, pokerface look on his face throughout the whole thing that is chilling.  I think the main reason Hostel fell flat for me was the existence of better torture-based movies such as this one and Martyrs.  Watching this made Hostel look like the sound of music.  As far as what to expect in this one, you've got a very umm "interesting" rape threesome thing happening, good ole fashioned eyeball torture, #### will be nailed to the floor and a whole lot more.  I had to look away from a few scenes which is rare for a sick #### like me.  Well worth the rental but you have to appreciate the subgenre.

This weekends viewings:

"Martyrs" (the original French version).  I finally got around to watching this and wow, it is by far one of my favorite horror flicks of all time. I can't explain why I have put off watching it for so long but my suggestion to you is WATCH IT... NOW . It is not available on DVD, Netlix etc. It can only be viewed via purchase/rental on VOD. WELL WORTH IT. 9/10

"The Pact" on Netflix  -This falls into the Haunting/Mystery category and while not spectacular, worth a viewing since its free on netflix. - 6.5/10

"We are Still Here" on Netflix - Another haunting film that is set during the 70s. I would have enjoyed this much more but unfortunately they showed you the "ghosts" far too much and ruined any sort of creepy feel that should always be part of these types of films. - 6/10

"The Girl in the Photographs" on Netflix - I was very excited for this one. Really liked the masks that were use, had some actors (Kal Penn) that I was familiar with and it was produced by Wes Craven. Maybe I was expecting to much from this but I was disappointed. Once again they show too much of the villains. They show them with the masks on that I thought were very cool , but then we see plenty of footage of them without their masks etc. This totally blew the creep factor for me and thus spoiled the flick. Had they treated the villains more like Michael Myers was treated, I think it would have made this one a winner. - 5/10

  Martyrs has a secure spot in my top 10 horror movies of all time.  It's that good.  I want to watch it again every time someone posts about it.

Bought "Lights Out" this weekend.

Solid flick. Very interesting concept and unexpected ending. One of those movies I don't feel remorse after buying.

Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla - (amazon prime) haven't watched this yet  but looks creepy. I have added a few films from this list onto my watchlist.

Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla (didn’t hit US soil until earlier this year, though it was initially released in Australia in 2014) is one deeply disturbing flick that features what I would consider a top five performance. Not top five relative to the genre, or relative to this year, I mean top five, all-time greatest performances. Glenn Maynard’s work is awe-inspiring, and although the story is interesting, heartbreaking, and humorous, it’s all about Maynard. It’s his show, and he doesn’t disappoint. A new personal favorite, Maynard and Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla will no doubt earn placement on a great deal of fan lists.

Which one is the French version? The 2008 or 2015 one?  I would guess the 2015 is the American knock off version judging by just the covers.
