FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (8 Viewers)

thought this thread would be swarming with it being the weekend before Halloween. been trying to find a horror movie to get me a little spooked and can't find any. Not scared of ghosts or that stuff, crazy people/families used to work.....   anybody have any recommendations?

 
my recent view list

The houses October built   Decent film about a crew travelling the states on a road trip in search of the Ultimate haunted house. its a found footage film. Decent movie on Netflix. I was hunting for anything similar to Hell House LLC and it sorta kinda hit that. Just not as good as Hell House   6/10

Annabelle creation  like others I thought it was pretty decent. I heard some bad reviews but I enjoyed it. also has some rewatchability

IT   a lot of people I spoke to crapped on this film. I thought it was really well done. It wasn't 'scary' but it was a real good horror flick

 
Friday the 13th Fan Film "Never Hike Alone" is free on Youtube and well worth an hour of your time. 

A few others that are on Netflix that I suggest

The Baby Sitter -  Hot baby sitter who does bad things. This very light fare but fun and enjoyable

A Dark Song - Mother who lost her son turns to a man who promises to help her make contact. Dark, sad, very well acted and a good ending. 

Geralds Game - Based on the Stephen King novel about a woman who gets handcuffed to her bed by her husband for a night of "fun", but it turns out to be anything but. One of the better King adaptations

Stake Land II - Dystopian vampire flick sequel, check them both out.  

Boys in Trees - Artsy horror/drama. Really enjoyed this one but can see how it may not be everyones cup of tea. 

 
Probably going to check out Jigsaw this weekend. 

Watched The Purge Trilogy over the weekend. I love those movies. Each was one was very different and you care about the characters. I think they are highly underrated horror action films. I dig them.

Halloween is upon us!!! Michael Myers marathon in my home as usual and also some other classics will be watched as usual.

We also make our home the Myers house in my neighborhood. We actually have the soundtracks for Halloween 1 and 2 on a loop, I dress as Myers and stand on my corner with a fog machine going, also have a huge projector screen on my driveway showing Halloween 1 and 2 (no sound just use it for the mood). We do Halloween up at my home. Our neighborhood is packed every year and our home is one of the highlights for the pre-teens, teens and some adults. We have a massive Halloween party in our neighborhood every year with free pizza for the residents, plus a DJ and jello shots for the adults. Also my neighbor at the other end of the block does a cool haunted house in his three car garage every year.

Fun times.

I read It.......a really long time ago.   Caught the movie and it was good but not really scary to me as an adult.   But I can see it having a big impact on teens.

Devil's Rejects is well done.

 
Creep 2 was really, really good.  One of the best portrayed serial killers ever. Annabelle Creation was also decent.  Love how they tie everything into a cohesive timeline in The Conjuring's universe.

Everything else I've watched recently has been ####.

my lady made me watch sisterhood of the traveling ya ya pants or some crap like that this past weekend i just drank myself to sleep about half way through god bless four loko but honestly it was horrific if you want to be scared and ashamed all at once then watch that little puppy take that to the bank bromigos

So... I am NOT a fan of horror films.  I am definitely more of a senseless comedy or even rom-com fan.  Basically I stick to light fare.

Well... my daughter has recently become a horror fan.  She asked me to go see "It".  I tried really really hard to find ANY other film that looked good in order to avoid going to see "It".  In the end, I did not see anything else out that looked good so I went to see it with her.

Now, since I am not a regular watcher of horror films it absolutely scared the crap out of me.  A lot more scary than I expected.  Having said that, I do agree with your comments.  I thought it was done really well.  I would say that this movie, combined with my daughter liking horror, has made it a lot more likely that I would consider horror films in the future.

I did used to watch horror films when I was around her age, so I get why she likes them.  In fact, I definitely want to watch the Evil Dead series with her.  And given that I grew up in PA I think the original Night of The Living Dead is in order.

 
Mortal Remains - Amazon Prime - Found Footage about a trio making a documentary about a little known oddball filmmaker who was rumored to use cadavers in his horror films.  This is one of the better movies I've watched recently. 

My biggest gripe with most found footage movies is that half to two thirds of the film is unnecessary filler where nothing happens.  This movie manages to be very tense throughout.  I think part of it is that it has a plot that hasn't been done before so you really don't know what to expect.  There are so many possibilities as to what's going on and where the film is going to end up.  The ending, which ultimately doesn't answer every question brought up, is still pretty clever.  Recommended, and it's free with Prime!

 
A Christmas Horror Story

Nice movie of interwoven stories.  Not overly gory and well done IMO.  It has William Shatner too.  Perfect for Christmas.  4/5.

 
Got to see Private Parts (not the Howard Stern biopic). Story of a teenage klepto runaway who wants to stay at the hotel owned by her Aunt (she's like Aunt Bee but even creepier). Tenants there include a perv priest, a perv photographer, and a drunk who spends most of his time laying on the floor or looking for an unoccupied bathroom. The girl is very nosy and basically spends the entire movie waiting to be murdered. Amazing creep factor in almost every character and scene, except for the key character of the kid who works down the street making keys.

This one sounds rather interesting.  I am a sucker for the found footage films.  

 
Leatherface:  Basically how the Texas chainsaw massacre family came about.  There is an insane asylum involved which is always a huge plus for me.  surprised at the good acting.  Lots of tremendous gore, I'm talking tremendous.  Some plot miscues, but overall pretty good movie.

 
what was the name of the movie that starts out on some country road where a guy in a truck picks up a hitchhiker and pushes her down into the foothold of the passenger side and begins to poke her with a pole or broomstick. It gets worse from there.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre? 

 
Caught Chained the other night on one of the cable networks. This was pretty disturbing and I did not see the ending coming.

D'Onofrio was awesome as usual and the older kid did a good job as well.

 
I’m not sure if it was reviewed here or not (I can’t remember), but I caught The Void. This movie was pretty dumb and lacked a real solid plot imo.  More like background noise for me while doing something else. 2/5.

The Gracefield Incident.  Not sure I would really call it horror, but some might.  Maybe sci-fi suspense.  It’s the alien a group of partying friends at a cabin encounter with a heart of gold. Canadian take on the genre. Forgettable found footage/first person type stuff.  2.5/5

just saw Houses October Built on Netflix myself, good movie. a lot of these on Netflix you go in with tempered expectations, and this one surpassed them well. Loved the scene where the girl walks onto the RV with the guy

ETA: just looked up Hell House LLC. not a big fan of the found footage, but when it is a good movie you can overlook it. Houses October Built fit that. I see there is a part 2 out now too

I mentioned this in  the Netflix thread. Has anyone watched Veronica yet? It's a Spanish demon possession film that's supposed to be damn scary.
I'll post a review after this weekend's viewing.

Didn't find it scary at all. Really don't get the hype for this one. 

 
Any Amazon Prime sleepers I've overlooked?  Liked The Blackcoat's Daughter but most of what I've found there is not worth seeing.

Saw Veronica this past weekend and thought it was not up to the hype either. If you have seen any of the Ouija movies you can say you have pretty much seen Veronica. It was ok not terrible and not great 6 out of 10 for me. A little REC feel but not as well done

 
The Autopsy of Jane Doe - Pretty good. Not a lot of outright horror but has a creepiness to it since it's primarily set in a morgue. Worth checking out.

Contracted - Meh. I thought the lead actress was good in this but overall it was fairly pointless. Some sort of deeper meaning to it, even if just at the end, would have helped.

Contracted seemed like they ran out of time to wrap it all up and the end was a quick edit job.

Exactly. It could have been elevated a bit if they gave the story some kind of message or meaning at the end. Just felt flat when it was over.

I haven't watched the last two seasons yet, but really enjoyed the first two.

 
The Similars is a Mexican movie on Netflix that is kind of like an hour and a half Mexican Twilight Zone episode, complete with a Mexican narrator that kind of sounds like Rod Serling.  It's about people in a bus station who freak out when everyone's face transforms into the face of the main character.  It's weird and at times hilarious seeing everyone (including a dog) with the same bearded face, but this was pretty good and well made.

Fragile on Amazon is about a nurse in a children's hospital trying to protect the kids from an evil spirit.  Surprisingly good despite its lack of originality.  The "villain" is super creepy looking.

Love Grave Encounters.  There were some genuinely creepy moments in there.  Of course the abandoned psych hospital themes always gets me.  

I like your list, and for me [Rec] would be at the top as well.  There is another one I always pimp in the genre - The Bay.   While not maybe as scary as some, it was well made.  It's directed by Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam, Wag the Dog) and I really like how it was put together using different type of cameras.  There is footage from security cameras, cop car cameras, phones, etc... So it doesn't rely on the trope that some of the others employ so often of following around a group of reporters.
