FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (10 Viewers)

The series- haunting of Hill House, on Netflix, is quite good so far.
I'm considering watching this but hesitate to dedicate 10 hours to a horror show. Is it more like a family drama with some horror elements or does it hold up as a horror show throughout. Interested in opinions from the people in this thread.

it's both- and it does both well. but the underlying theme for both is the titular haunting at hill house.

I don't recommend a ton of stuff- I recommend this one, especially if horror's your thing (and I'm not usually a horror guy).

The 6th episode is one of the better pieces of TV I've seen in a long time.

This has been building consistently at a really high level. Turning into a big fan of the show after seven. Even the family drama stuff- there are parts that are a bit annoying in that they're each making assumptions about the other people's experiences but not actually talking with each other (what I always call the Threes Company plot device)...but even that fits the characters and overall story arc. It's helped by being written incredibly well... And acted, directed well too. Plus it all ties together seamlessly with the horror aspect.

I've got Jigsaw and Unsane queued up on Amazon Prime for viewing this weekend.  Since they are free, will prob watch them both anyway but any spoiler-free thoughts about whether these movies are worth 90+ minutes of my time?  TIA

FWIW, I stopped watching the Saw movies after #3

I actually enjoyed all of the Saw movies.  I liked how Saw 3D tied it all up.

Haven't watched Jigsaw yet, but having Laura Vandervoort in it is a huge plus IMO.

free for 90 minutes you can't go wrong. Haven't watched Unsane, but I would say go in with low expectations for the Jigsaw movie.

Rolled through a few over the past few days:

  • Into the Dark: The Body (Available on Hulu and its a movie series) - A Hitman is discovered on Halloween dragging a body by some dopes and they think its his costume. Fun flick you can watch with your SO. (6.5 ) Light Gore, Few Jump Scares
  • Trench 11 - Nazis do strange tests on people underground. Been there before but it was entertaining - (6) - Violence, Gore, Jump Scares
  • Frailty - Stars Bill Paxton and McConaughey and is one of the great genre films of recent memory. Father goes crazy and thinks an angel has chosen he and his two sons to hunt down demons with magical weapons. - (8.5) Violence, very little gore
  • Night of the Virgin - Older woman seduces young virgin to impregnate her and a bunch of crazy stuff happens. Contains one of the worst scenes I have watched in a long time. (6.5) Gore, Gore, Shocking scenes
  • Ghost Stories - Very well done anthology about a skeptic TV Show host that debunks psychics and  takes on three cases that his idol couldn't debunk - Very well done, great acting, great visuals. Worth a rent. (7.5) Jump scares, creepy, little gore and violence
  • Housewife - Wife falls under the spell of a cult leader and ##### gets real weird. I watched the last twenty minutes of this three times and I am still confused as to whats going on, I liked it... I think. (6.5) Creepy, Gore, Violence
  • Tonight She Comes - Kids go into the woods, find devil worshippers and well, you know - Not worth the time I spent writing this. (4) - Heavy Gore, Heavy Violence
  • Revenge - Woman gets raped and seeks out her "revenge". This has been done so many times, but this one is slightly different. It becomes quite absurd at times and I can't suggest paying to see it, however if you have SHUDDER, it's available there. (6) Rape, Gore, Violence

meh Unsane was just OK. Thought the first half setup was better than the second half. 5/10

Up at Halloween Horror nights right now with the wife and son. We went to Halloween 2018 this afternoon and wow. It exceeded all expectations.

No spoilers. If you are a huge fan of the 1978 classic you will love this brand new sequel which dismisses every sequel ever made (including Halloween 2).

Very well done and Jamie Lee was outstanding. Just oozes so much classic Halloween and I will stop there.

I watched Terrified on Shudder last night and it was pretty good.  It's one of those movies where the imagery/visuals are really well done and genuinely scary, but the plot is kind of shaky.  I think it's worth the watch.  At least watch the first 10 minutes....

Just knocked out “The Witch”

8.5/10. Beautiful work of suspense. Love this style of flick. It had a few flaws but overall I loved it.

GF And I watched a couple good ones tonight both free with Amazon prime

Southbound - Five interlocking tales of terror follow the fates of a group of weary travellers who confront their worst nightmares - and darkest secrets - over one long night on a desolate stretch of desert highway. I like anthology movies because if you don't like the one that is currently playing, it will change soon enough. 7.2/10

The Loved Ones - When Brent turns down his classmate Lola's invitation to the prom, she concocts a wildly violent plan for revenge. Pretty gory Australian film. Sort of reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw. 7.7/10

“Mandy”

ehhhh.... just not my cup of tea. I appreciate the goal. I respect the talent in getting there. Loved several scenes but so much else just left me feeling “meh”

6.0/10

Liked this one.  It’s different.

Just saw the new Halloween last night.

Highly recommend.

The idea of scrapping all the sequels to make a sequel directly from the original was great.  Other movies have done it, and I hope more movies do it.  It might actually catch on as a new thing in movies, and I for one approve.  What's the narrative about sequels?  They mostly all suck, right?  Well, if at first you don't succeed................

Haunting of Hill House on Netflix peaked in the middle of the season, but still ended solid. Highly recommend this series.

this may have been mentioned before, but for low budget clown film, Clowntown wasn't too bad. free on Amazon Prime 6.5/10 if scoring i think

I watched one episode and it was pretty slow. Did we see Theodora as a child? I'll watch one more and hope it picks up.

Yeah, we watched the first episode the other night and was underwhelmed. It was what I feared it would be, a family drama with some horror thrown in. I'll usually excuse a first episode since they have to set up the show and introduce all the characters so I'll definitely keep going and hope for better.

Wow, couldn't disagree more. I thought it was absolutely horrible. I liked H1, 2, 3, 4, 5 all much better than this one

If you’re expecting “Horror” then it’s not really going to deliver. I’d say it’s a lot of suspense initially, and gradually blends in more horror. We just got to eps 6 and 7 and absolutely love it.

Very creative at times...  anyone notice he use of almost theatrical style in e7 with looooong continuous shots from a single moving camera at times?

Everyone needs to watch Errementari on Netflix now. So different. So good. Horror film of the year for me.

Edit: Don’t watch the dubbed version.

I think I was in the "all style, no substance" camp on this one.  Remember it being original but feeling mostly men about it.

Cool idea- kind of like an alternate universe sequel. I could see that catching on for sure.  Horror or otherwise, what movie franchise would you most want to see get an alternate universe sequel?

What other movies have done this?

Horror-wise for me it would probably be Nightmare on Elm Street.  The core idea is so great but besides 1/2 of Dream Warriors they really turned to #### in a hurry and was all about dumb gags and Freddy one-liners.  I say forget all the sequels and actually make Freddy and those movies scary again.

Other than that, I would love to see a good Alien movie again in my lifetime.

Elm Street movies are good one. Alien sequels can be done and don't even need an alternate universe take. A Friday the 13th that re-invents Jason after the 1st the film would be cool. It would be an obvious ripoff of this Halloween film but when did that ever stop anyone.

Friday would be great since Jason was in 2secs of the first one, so you could take them in any direction you want and reimagine Jason.   Not sure what could be done, but anything would be better than the newest one where he was evidently spending his time digging tunnels and #### around Camp Crystal Lake.

lol I haven't seen once since Freddy vs Jason. I am not sure how good the movie would be but it seems like there is money in it. The kids today still recognize Jason and would be excited to see a re-imagined version.

Good question.  I don't know.  Gonna do a search of "good movies with bad sequels" and see what jogs my memory.

Matrix

Speed

Godfather (after part 2)

Blair Witch

Dawn of the Dead

just off the top of my head looking through here.

Matrix is a great choice. Those sequels were such garbage.

Keeping it horror related........

Wrong Turn.  I thought that movie was fantastic.  The 5-6 sequels just went off the rails.  By the last few you could tell the inbreds were just wearing masks that looked like the masks you get at the party stores around this time of year.

Saw Bride of Frankenstein on the big screen at the local historic theater last Friday evening. Man what a classic at every level of filmmaking.
