The House of the Devil

Whoa, buddy.  I had a vague recollection of this one being good.  Not sure if I was really wrong, or I haven't actually seen it.  This is more than a slow burn, and my wife and I were laughing our asses off b/c I paused it for a bathroom break, seeing that we were 2/3rds through the movie, and not a damn thing happened.  Some ok parts (basically the first death!), but this might actually be my least favorite so far - at least Firestarter was more entertaining for different reasons.  

 
Has anyone mentioned The Ritual in here? It's on Netflix and it's great. Four Brits get lost in a Nordic forest and things get weird and bloody.

If I were to put together a "best of" of VHS shorts, it would be the following:

- The one with the documentary crew investigating the cult in Malaysia, and ends with that amazing car chase. This is hands down the best short in the series.

- The succubus one.  Too bad the follow up movie based on it sucked.

- The one with the guy who opens a portal to a different parallel dimension where the other people have freakish monster-like genitals.

- the zombie one where a guy gets turned into a zombie while his goPro is attached to his head.

10/7 - There's Someone Inside Your House
Teen slasher flick.  The first 15-20 minutes really grabbed me then it fell off a bit.  It did have a kill I don't think I've seen before, which was a nice surprise.  It has a "whodunit" flair with a masked killer, but the mask choices were unique.  It's not terrible, but it's also not great. 3/5

10/8 - Till Death
I thought this was going to be eerily similar to "Gerald's Game" for the first 1/3 of the movie or so, but then it becomes a pretty entertaining cat-and-mouse game.  More suspense than horror, but it's good to see Megan Fox back on the big screen and wearing minimal clothing. 3.5/5

10/9 - The Manor
There's a couple of bigger names in this one (Barbara Hershey and Bruce Davison) and it centers around an older lady being placed in an assisted living facility, but all is not as it appears.  I found myself mostly engrossed in the plot and the ending is worth getting to.  One of my favorites so far. 4.25/5

10/10 - I Saw the Devil
This came up under the horror genre, but it's really more of a revenge movie.  It's a Korean flick and is a lot like "Oldboy" or "Audition" concerning the plot.  There's plenty of gore and some minor horror elements, but it's a fringe horror movie at best.  Still a good flick, but probably 20-30 minutes too long. 3.5/5

Got "The Power" queued up for tonight (set in 1970's London in a hospital during rolling blackouts and a nurse working the night shift scared of the dark).  The poster and trailer caught my eye, so giving it a shot.  More to come!

 
I saw there is a new Paranormal activity movie coming out on Paramount+ on 10/29. IMO the later movies were not good but man, I remember sitting in the theatre for hat first one and people screaming. Great experience.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. I don’t have high hopes but will watch it.

 
10/11 - The Power
This is almost like two movies in one.  It shifts genres about halfway through and lost some steam for me.  The first half is very atmospheric (long, dark hallways, minimal lighting, bumps in the night) and really captivated me.  The shift from an atmospheric, tense movie into something totally different had me scratching my head, but it ends up explaining the shift by the end.  The English accents weren't too strong, but there were a few times I know I missed some dialogue.  Still a solid entry and would recommend.  It's on Shudder. 4/5

A few more I will be watching…all involve “haunted houses”. Have seen these and think they are all worth watching.

I've seen Hell House, and really liked that one.  Are the sequels worth a watch?   I also have Houses October Built on my long list.   Is that one found footage too?

Oh baby.  Finally watched Hereditary and it was fantastic.  Totally worth all the effort I put into not spoiling it and then forgetting it existed.  In addition, the song over the credits shot me deep into a rabbit hole of exploration and feels and staring into my fire pit while nursing another beer.  

Judy Collins covers Joni Mitchell on Both Sides Now

I guess it's not a good predictor of how I'll like Midsommar but I'll get to that soon.

Wrong Turn (2020/2021 version) - One of those kids on vacation go hiking where they shouldn't type horrors.  Pretty good though.  7.5/10.

Saw this last night with Mrs. Yambag.  Really enjoyed it, different and unsettling.  Definitely a few "did I just see that" moments.

:yes:   I guessing it's a different movie on rewatch, but I haven't mustered up the strength to watch it again yet.  

I've seen Midsommar 2x now.  I don't like it as much at Hereditary, but for sure worth a watch.  The oppressive tone that is Hereditary is there for about the first 20mins of Midsommar, and then it turns into, well... something different.  ;)  

 
10/12 - The Amityville Moon
Um, ok.  This movie is pretty bad and not necessarily in a good way unless you're looking for am ultra-low-budget werewolf movie.  The acting is very poor and the werewolf is a bit too obviously an actor in a suit.  There is a transformation scene that isn't terrible, but the rest of the movie is a struggle to get through.  I don't recommend tis unless you're punishing yourself for something (unless schlocky C-Horror is your thing). 1/5

 
The Old Ways

New take on exorcism horror.  Good flick.  Watched on Netflix.   8/10

I need to make a list and attempt a ranking.  Sadly, I think I've forgotten a couple we watched this month already.   

Last night was The Houses October Built.   Seems like it's these found footage ones that both of us seem to gravitate towards.   The wife didn't like the ending, and said she wants to watch part 2.

Malignant

Not sure how I feel about this one. It’s an interesting premise, but poorly executed imo. It’s like a horror movie in the Matrix. 3/5.

Watched Session 9 last night.  Definitely a slow burn with many aspects taken from The Shining.  I thought it paid off at the end and felt there were multiple ways to look at what went down.  

 
Last night was Wes Craven's New Nightmare.   

Had never seen this one.   At it's core was actually a great idea with Freddy being a construct of Wes' nightmares and was starting to invade the real world.  Early seeds of that 'meta' horror that would continue with Scream and others.  That said, the kid in this was god awful as were the f/x.   I would say that it's the 3rd best Nightmare movie, but honestly that is more of a reflection on how crappy the others are vs. how good this one one.  

 
10/13 - The Night House
I remember seeing the trailer a while back and thinking it looked interesting then COVID took over and it stayed in theaters for, like, 15 minutes.  It's more of a thriller than a pure horror, but it definitely had some horror moments.  Couple of well-timed jump scares and some good camerawork in some tight spaces.  As a movie, I thought it was very good but it's not a popcorn flick.  You've got to watch this movie.  It takes a bit of a ding in the horror category. 3.75/5

Did not care for this one.  

I also watched Aftermath a few days back and came away underwhelmed by that one too.  Partly that was because the plot veered off in a very different direction than I expected, but also because the story was just too weird.

I'm not going to say that it's awesome or anything, but Level 16 on Netflix is worth a watch.  It's one of those movies where you know from the very beginning that there's going to be some sort of twist somewhere along the line because it's just so obviously set up that way, but they do a nice job with it.

I actually really liked this one on my second viewing. I went into it with the wrong expectations (being it was James Wan and he has been doing a certain kinda movie for years now). This was a total nod to David Cronenberg late 70’s early 80’s films.....with Wan’s touch. The last 20 minutes were insane. I just did not like the last 5 minutes.....kinda was the “happy” ending which did not fit after seeing the previous 20 minutes of pure carnage LOL!!!

I was pretty hard on it after my first viewing. I like it.

It was creepy for sure and a return to form for the series because yes....it went way off the rails with Dream Child (was already at the end of it’s shelf life) and Final Nightmare (pure crap and never watch it).

The original, Dream Warrior and Dream Master are good Freddy flicks. New Nightmare was a great concept. Agree about the kid....ugh. But a solid Wes Craven movie.

This is what we watched last night.   The Britishisms made the movie 2 points better automatically.   I was a tad let down by the reveal of what was actually going on, but still a fun ride and one of the better ones we've watched this month.

I watched this last night as well :).  Enjoyed it but was expecting a bit more twist than what ended up happening.  But that's ok.  Was still a good movie and I'm glad some of the movies I've enjoyed recently were foreign in origin.

10/15 - Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel
Watched the first one a few months ago then promptly forgot there were 2 sequels.  I really enjoyed the first one and this one had some good moments but it fell short of the first for me.  The found footage aspect is the best part of these movies and they interspersed the creepy footage with a news interview type show.  It was necessary to the story, but took me out of the creepy stuff too much.  3/5

Going to cheat a little tonight and rewatch the 2018 Halloween as I'm going to Halloween Kills tomorrow and want to refresh my memory

I thought about doing the same thing.  It's on Peacock, so might be lazy instead of going to theater.

I was let down by the first one so didn't watch the sequel.  

 
Last night was Bloodthirsty on Prime.   There was probably a good movie in here, but overall it was meh for me.  I've been in the mood for some werewolf action, so gave this a try.  It's about a pop star who goes to a producer's house with her girlfriend to work on a new album, and changes start to occur.    Mostly what killed it for me was the music and crap song that I had to hear over and over as they worked on it.  Other than that, decent idea and gore.  

Tonight I will probably try Howl on Shudder.  

IMO werewolf movies are one of the harder subgenres to find good movies for.  

 
Tonight we will be watching the new Halloween. Knowing that this is the 2nd part of a trilogy, leaves me feeling a little meh about how good this will be.

I think these movies are in capable hands right now, but I didn't know the bolded either and don't love that news.

Rewatched Brightburn...I saw it in the theater, and it was a fun rewatch. It's almost too tight at 91 minutes, especially when you consider that most super hero origin stories clock in closer to 150. Some real nice atmosphere with spikes of gore fitting what the character could do. 

 
10/15 - Halloween (2018)
As I mentioned, I cheated a little tonight as I did see this when it came out in theaters three years ago.  I remembered a good portion of it, but I still couldn't stop watching it.  It brought the same tension and dread that the original had in spades and the use of silence was very good.  This is my favorite horror series, so there may be some rose-colored glasses here but I think this is the best since the original. 4.25/5

10/16 - Halloween Kills
I went into this with high hopes given how good the first of the trilogy was and was somewhat disappointed.  It did it's job to set up the final film but it didn't have the same feel as the 2018 movie.  I barely felt any sense of dread or the tension of an unstoppable killer coming after you.  I won't go further into this to avoid spoilers, but this felt like a movie simply to move the story forward.  3/5
