Finally watched Hereditary. Jawn was ON TIME! Toni Collette is one of the actresses that just brings it. Man....gul dang Devil Worshippers....always trying to start stuff and always wanting to be naked.
Now THIS movie scarred my psyche.

Yeah, It's one I haven't stopped thinking about since I watched it. Kind of like Midsommar.....it was a great movie that I don't really need to rewatch. Like Ollivander says about Voldemort in Harry Potter...., those movies are "great things.....terrible, yes, but great".

VERY different vibe, at least after the first 15-20 minutes.

I have seen Midsommar a few times now, but I have yet built up the courage to watch Hereditary again, despite thinking it is one of the best horror movies of the last decade or so.

If you're a fan of The Shining, I can't imagine how not. Maybe I was biased and I loved the book, one of the better things King has done in a long time.
So many great scenes, I distinctly remember being impressed by the camera work in this scene and am even more impressed how this show the way that Kubrick went about getting that shot.

Ummm...Midsommar and Hereditary are like Disney flicks compared to Ari Aster's movie he did right before them.

If you have the nerve, "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons" is available on YouTube for free. It is a short movie like 30-35 minutes long that, I think, he made it as some form of college project. Just go in cold and come out traumatized, but don't say I didn't warn you.

I am 4 and a half minutes in.......oh boy

Just read the wikipedia on it. I don't have the nerve.

I'm not traumatized. I get it, but it wasn't exactly earth shattering imo.

You really should. It was great. And repeated viewings you gain more and more insight to the entire bizarre week these college graduate students went thru. Just nuts.

I thought Midsommar was decent.
While Hereditary was entertaining, I have no idea what happened. At some point towards the end I completely lost track of what was happening and was just like "whaaaAAATT"

The Strange Thing About the Johnson's.
Well, I finally got through it. I actually was expecting it to get way more messed up, but yeah, it was still pretty messed up.

I suggest watching it again (both of them). It’s worth it.

Dashcam

I’m 30 minutes into it and it’s hilarious. It’s not supposed to be (maybe it is). Another Blumhouse minimal effort film. 2/5

Men

A women goes away to the country side to be alone after the tragic death of her husband.
The first three quarters of this really hold the tension with the music and all around cinematography then the last part of the movie gets weird in a good/creepy way with some themes of toxic masculinity .
Another good one from A24

I come from a pretty "normal" family, so I needed the comment section to help me out with the deeper meaning. It's still hard to watch but I guess I get it now.

Moloch

Dutch horror film about weird goings on surrounding a Dutch family living on the edge of a peat bog. It’s not bad and worth a watch imo. 3.75/5

Saw the movie Hurt (2018) last night. A low budget Blumhouse film where a soldier with PTSD returns home and goes to a Halloween attraction and bad stuff happens. Pretty awful but wife and I had a good time cracking jokes through it all. It does have a twist ending if you make it that far. 2/5

So The Witch was a brutal film. Very atmospheric, leaning heavily on the mood, music and scenery of it all.

Just a feeling of pure dread and evil from the moment they left their village.

Great film. I love the fact that it doesn't hold the audience's hand and stands up reasonably well to multiple interpretations.

For example, a mid version of this film would lead off with a title card informing the audience of the existence of something called "ergot poisoning," alerting us that we should be on the lookout for that. Instead, this film chooses to let that angle go entirely unmentioned, so you feel rewarded when you notice it. But the story is open-ended enough to work on several different levels. It's a good ghost story even if you completely miss that there's no reliable narrator.

Smile: meh
I watched it last night with the lights off and was still not more than mildly chilled. It’s obvious the writers watched a lot of 70s cop shows because they really don’t know how our systems work and that it really shouldn’t be that easy to get into see a prisoner just because you show
up and say hey, can I talk to this dude? And don’t mind the silliness of the underpinning of the plot because the Director will be sure to inform you when you’re supposed to be scared with the music so you don’t have to think for yourself. I will add this is a movie for jump scare fans as you will get quite the workout, enough so you may feel exhausted. all in all a movie to have on while you’re cleaning dishes or folding laundry.

Viking Wolf - Netflix
Kinda like American Werewolf in London without the humor or American and some Norwegian town subbing in for London.
Not the worst, far from the best.

The Feast

Wow, what an intense movie. An affluent Welsh family hosts some guests for a dinner party and the help for the evening is very strange. All kinds of bad things start happening. It’s weird, slowly drawn out, and the dialog is in Welsh with subtitles. I liked it. 3.75/5

The Furies

Gory movie involving hunting down women as part of some sick game in Australia. Kind of has a Hostel feel to it, but the plot is different enough. 3.75/5

Soft and Quiet

It’s messed up for sure, but sadly not totally unbelievable in this day and age. The ending was ridiculous and unlikely. Pretty good for Blumhouse imo. 3.5/5

Maybe I am out to lunch or something but I watched the Outwaters last night and this may be one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. I had seen all the hype on social media and the fairly positive reviews (we purchased it last night on PPV--7.99 to rent 9.99 to buy), so I went in with high expectations.

This is a found footage movie, but that is pretty much all I can tell you about this movie. I think this is part of the horror movement where they make movies on a micro-budget (this one was 15k) and hope to strike gold--like Skinamarink.

You know you are watching an absolute crap-fest when you pause the movie 3 times to see how much time is remaining. This one takes forever to get going and then when it does, you have no idea what you are seeing because of the way it is purposefully filmed. I get people wanting to compare this to Blair Witch, but BW had a plot and dialogue and not just screaming and shaky camera work. I don't get the glowing reviews calling this the scariest movie of the year. I poop scarier than this movie.

You have been warned

I'm a huge fan of the found footage genre, and most recent movies have been absolutely awful. Avoiding Outwaters completely because of the feedback people have had. The last good recent one I've seen was Horror in the High Desert and even that wasn't particularly great.

Watched the Blue Ruin / Green Room double. More thriller than horror (especially Blue Ruin), but Green Room mixes intensity and gore very effectively. Really liked Green Room - available on HBO MAX.
