FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (4 Viewers)

Smile was fine, but movies in this sub-genre feel very same-y to me. It was very well-made and featured a strong performance from whoever the lead actress was. Good cinematography and good vibes. But I could have been describing the American version of the The Ring just as easily there. This felt like a reimagining of that, or It Follows, only this time with more of a focus on mental health. Definitely a solid recommendation.

It was very very ''It Follows '' like , which i enjoyed as well .

Watched MEGAN on Peacock. I thought it was pretty good.
Fun flick. Good gateway horror movie for teenagers...I remember seeing Tremors when I was 13, and M3gan seems comparable for today's youth.

The little girl from Haunting of Hill House is your next big child star probably.

I hope when they make these robots for real they don't actually construct them so that they can go murder everyone. They don't all need to be one app away from being fully functioning terminators.

Maybe I am out to lunch or something but I watched the Outwaters last night and this may be one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. I had seen all the hype on social media and the fairly positive reviews (we purchased it last night on PPV--7.99 to rent 9.99 to buy), so I went in with high expectations.

This is a found footage movie, but that is pretty much all I can tell you about this movie. I think this is part of the horror movement where they make movies on a micro-budget (this one was 15k) and hope to strike gold--like Skinamarink.

You know you are watching an absolute crap-fest when you pause the movie 3 times to see how much time is remaining. This one takes forever to get going and then when it does, you have no idea what you are seeing because of the way it is purposefully filmed. I get people wanting to compare this to Blair Witch, but BW had a plot and dialogue and not just screaming and shaky camera work. I don't get the glowing reviews calling this the scariest movie of the year. I poop scarier than this movie.

You have been warned
Yeah. It’s really bad.

It Follows needs a darn sequel, and a prequel.

no, it really doesn't.

it's a (thankfully) singular sensation that could only be diluted and cheapened by any tinkering - i have very little faith in anything holding a candle to the original.

no need for "It Follows: THE BEGINNING!", "It Follows - AGAIN!", "Son of It Follows", "It Follows the Sun", "It Follows YOU!", "Bride of It Follows", "It Follows: Final Chapter!"

we good.

Agreed and I am begging for Hollywood to take this advice. And not just for this movie.

They could've said this about the Godfather, too. Sure, Hollywood would probably most likely ruin a sequel for It Follows, they have a horrible track record. But the concept is good enough to explore a little more if done right.

There have been good sequels to come out of horror movies. Army of Darkness, Conjuring 2, 28 weeks later, Dawn of the Dead to name a few.

Smile: meh
I watched it last night with the lights off and was still not more than mildly chilled. It’s obvious the writers watched a lot of 70s cop shows because they really don’t know how our systems work and that it really shouldn’t be that easy to get into see a prisoner just because you show
up and say hey, can I talk to this dude? And don’t mind the silliness of the underpinning of the plot because the Director will be sure to inform you when you’re supposed to be scared with the music so you don’t have to think for yourself. I will add this is a movie for jump scare fans as you will get quite the workout, enough so you may feel exhausted. all in all a movie to have on while you’re cleaning dishes or folding laundry.
Saw this over the weekend...

Why didn't she just commit suicide with no one around? She knew the curse was going to continue and she even thought about murdering an innocent person to stop the have the curse go to another person. And especially since she was such a "do gooder" by helping people, taking less pay at a job where she could help more people, etc. Was the spirit preventing her from offing herself?

And now with the cop....what does he do? You would think that with all the information he has about the past victims, he would blast the information everywhere and make people aware.

And what if there are two witnesses to the suicide/murder? Are there now two people with the curse/entity?

Did you know that was Kevin Bacon's daughter?

Believe this was her plan by driving out there until she realized that she might be able to kill the thing in her mind, so she took a shot. By the time she figured out it was an hallucination, cop had found her.

And now with the cop....what does he do? You would think that with all the information he has about the past victims, he would blast the information everywhere and make people aware. Probably will rinse and repeat, everyone will think he is a nutjob. But yeah wouldn't mind a sequel to see how that plays out, horror movie sequels are always good, right?

And what if there are two witnesses to the suicide/murder? Are there now two people with the curse/entity? Great question, but would think the entity works to make sure there is only one witness.

Did you know that was Kevin Bacon's daughter? Did not know that.
My thoughts in italics.

Just assumed the being wouldn't allow it

Bad Moon

Werewolf movie with Eddie from Eddie and the Cruisers. The first word of the movie title says it all. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this movie from the mid 90s. 2/5

Possum - Shudder

If you like stories about a creepy guy walking around with a bag containing an even creepier spider dummy, then my friend, this movie is for you. Slow burn, low budget, yet oddly enthralling. Not a ton happens, but the atmosphere is oppressive and the lead actor is solid enough that if I saw him anywhere near my daughter's school I'd immediately dial 911. Rotten Tomatoes has it 90% for critics, 54% for audience, which feels about right. I'm sure a lot of people got bored as it's a slow-paced psychological thriller with little to no violence, but I enjoyed it. And the spider. That friggin spider.

Evil Dead Rise

Good opening scene but then takes awhile to get going again. Set in a rundown apartment building as opposed to a cabin, and having kids/family involved took away some enjoyment. Buckets of blood and gore. 2.5/5

Just got done seeing this. It was pretty good. I felt it was like a good workout because I was kind of wrung out when I got done with it. Lots of gore and jump scares. I would say a 3.5 out of 5.

Then don't watch it ya big jerk face.....

Children of the Corn (remake)

Shudder special that wasn’t all together terrible. The beast is pretty cool imo. 3/5

The Boogeyman 2023

Just saw this in the theater. I must say it takes a lot to scare me, but this one was pretty intense. Of course it had the usual over-abundance of jump scares, but just the elements worked really well in this story to create fear. Good female leads--I didn't like the dad's character at all. I really loved the short story by King and they did a good job elaborating on it. He actually liked this movie, which is rare to get his approval for projects created from his books. Unlike many movies these days that are way too long, I think this movie did leave a lot on the table and there was a ton more they could have done with it. Solid 4/5

Wrath of Becky

Sequel to Becky (2020 iirc). Interesting to see again what mayhem Becky finds herself in. Worth a watch if you liked the first one. 3.5/5

My BG was the script supervisor on this and was sending me pics from the set. Haven't seen it yet but can't wait.

Watched El Conde last night. It’s a story about a family of vampires set in Chile after the death of Pinochet. Interesting take on some old ideas with a touch of humor added to spice things up. It has a Wes Anderson vibe but moved at a bit slower pace. Darkly funny and helps if you bone up on Augusta Pinochet and his family. A good watch.

PS- be forewarned there is a copious amount of voice over but ultimately used to good effect.

So a couple updates

No One Will Save You--it is on Hulu. Very solid scary alien movie. Really great acting by the lead in this one. I won't give away anything, but I will say there is exactly one line of spoken dialogue by the main actress in the movie. We actually had to look up the meaning of the ending because there was a difference of opinion in our house. 4/5--would watch again.

A Haunting in Venice--saw it in the theater yesterday. Not exactly a horror flick, but it had some jump scares and creepy scenes. If you liked Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, you will like this one. Poirot is back to solve a mystery, but it has a supernatural angle to it. 3.5/5--the movie takes place over one night and is filmed so darkly that it can be kind of clunky and plodding in spots.

Cobweb is a pretty formulaic but well done and quite fun "thing in the walls" flick that is now available on streaming. It had an odd summer theatrical release despite taking place the week of Halloween.

Any recommendations for horror podcasts?
@ThaPenguin - my favorite is a British pod called The Evolution of Horror. They do their show as "seasons" that are based on a topic, then each week they do 1-2 movies. They usually go in release order, and the seasons are long. For example the current season is Home Invasion. They started with The Old Dark House and The Raven, and it looks like they are ending with Ready or Not and Bodies Bodies Bodies on the 3oth episode. The seasons on slashers and ghosts were good, but my favorite 2 so far were the Folk Horror and Mind & Body seasons. Great stuff.

My other current go-to is Colors of the Dark. They cover more recent releases. The format is more familiar - more of a "what have you been watching" at the start, then Rebekah will talk about a book or two she read, then they will talk about a topic. Elric Kane is a co-host here, and he is on another non-horror movie podcast Pure Cinema Podcast. I also bring this one up because their horror episodes are awesome. I think it was their Oct 2020 episode where they made lists for a horror all-nighter. The one in 2017 they did 6 triple features. They dig deep and recommend stuff I would have never come across otherwise, like Messiah of Evil.

Enjoyed this quite a bit, nothing earth shattering but a fun ride and yeah, the ending is interesting for sure.

Watched Infinity Pool. Damn. Felt a bit like as if White Lotus went super duper dark. Can't decide whether we need more or less Cronenbergs in the world. More, it's gotta be more.

Here were new-to-me movies that I found on my streaming options so far. I will look more over the weekend as stuff gets added with the new month.

Invisible Man (new version with E.Moss)
The Wailing
Exorcist 3 (I thought about doing the series, as I don't know if I've seen 2 and it would lead to the newest one with R.Crowe)
90s Night of the Living Dead
Saint Maud
Lamb
Host
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
Deadstream
The Visit
Werewolves Within
Hush
Possession
The Beyond

Rewatches:

The Exorcist (if I do the series)
Hereditary
One Cut of the Dead
Triangle
Nightwatch (90s movie with Nolte and McGregor)

I'm sure I won't do all of these, but it's a good starting point. As I posted in the other thread Criterion channel has a few great Horror series, and I will probably add a good 10+ through that. I try to do mostly stuff I haven't seen and splash in a few rewatches. Every season one or more of Trick R Treat, Tucker and Dale, or Cabin in the Woods seem to get watched too.

Just watched Tumbbad yesterday. Wow, it’s a pretty intense movie. I really enjoyed it bc it was something totally different. 4.5/5

I was just about to mention The Wailing in the other thread. Excellent movie!
