FFOC $1,000,000 (1 Viewer)

Disclaimer - this is not an ad and I am not in any way associated with FFOC.

I searched but couldn't find any discussion on this yet.

I just came accross an ad for Fanball FFOC with a 'guaranteed' $1,000,000 1st place prize payout.

Anyone have any opins on this contest or done some research into the setup/structure/payouts, etc.?

While I don't like some things about Fanball I have played other Fantasy games run by CDM Sports which has the same owner now (Fun) for 10+ yrs.

Entry is $125 per team that gets you into 10 team leagues.

After 9 weeks of hth round robin play the top 2 square off sending one to the championship bracket from each league.

I tried to sign up for it and apparently some states (like MD) are locked out from being able to win money - I tried to email them and ask why - no response yet.

I called the 800 number and someone answered right away. Just got the informational email yesterday. I am still considering it...

I am still looking for that number - must have missed it - can't find it - can someone post it here.

They are going to need alot of signups to cover that prize money. Seems like there would be more talk of this if it were going to happen.

Why would anyone want a draft time in July? The total prize money is about $1.8 million. They have to have 14,400 teams to cover the prize money at $125 a team. They don't say anything about contingencies if they don't get enough teams, or not that I could find. I played in a CDM football contest for probably ten years. It is a big company. CDM is the company that fought Major League Baseball about using players names and statistics for fantasy baseball. And they won. So it a company big enough to run a contest like this. They probably expect 20,000 teams. The profit margin would have to be that high for them. That is what I think anyway. I would feel safer doing a contest with them over just about anyone else because this is a huge company. Unlike AFFL, they have been doing fantasy sports for a long, long time. This is a multi-million dollar company. If they are big enough to fight the MLB and win I'd feel comfortable playing in this deal.

I thought I read somewhere that the money is already in an escrow account? Can anyone verify this?

FROM the website FAQ (note this is a copy/paste):

Does the Fantasy Football Open Championship guarantee the $1,000,000 prize?

Yes, the $1,000,000 prize is guaranteed. The prize money is placed in escrow and will be awarded via check to the overall FFOC winner at the Las Vegas Main Event on December 22, 2008.

(I read this to mean the 1,000,000 is guarnteed if the contest has enough entries on 8/25 and runs as per earlier post)

They have already restricted players from some states - as I said before - MARYLAND is one of the odd states out - I asked them in an email and got this response:

Jim,

Thank you for the email. Although Fanball/CDM presently does not restrict participation for prizes in any U.S. states nor any Canadian providences for games that are solely operated for Fanball/CDM, for games that are operated for third-party clients, it is their decision as to whether or not to restrict participation based on their interpretation of the law. In this case, the client has chosen to restrict participation for prizes for six states in the U.S. and in the providence of Quebec.

Thank You,

Fanball

Thanks for the reply Alberta. I went ahead and joined it. If they get enough players it sounds like it will be fun.

I spent 10 mins on the phone tonight with Fanball/CDM Sports staff regarding the FFOC.

While it's not published in too many places yet he was able to email me the FFOC support/help phone number which I've posted below.

If anyone can handle the server/tech demands of so many leagues/drafts/weekly blind bids, etc. CDM (i.e. Fanball can). They already have 'draft n play' type football games established from prior years.

Whether they can sell enough entries to make a go remains to be seen but I'll likely give it a shot. I like and trust CDM (fanball) which means a lot.

The Phone number for FFOC is 1-877-348-7301

Thank you,

Fanball

I, too, figured they'd need 20,000 entries. That's a LOT. However, with CDM behind it, I imagine they could probably fill it.

I think most of us are concerned with whether this is actually going to happen or if we are going to have to go through a hassle to get our money back. I don't know if this is reassuring to some but this was posted on another forum who is running FFOC:

Hey Paul,

Don't be discouraged by the activity on the message board. The official site (and thus the message board) only launched a few days ago. The previous site already had a significant number of people register to play. The game is going to run, and feel free to take the time to prepare a strategy for your team. Not to suggest that $125 is not a lot of money, but its extremely reasonable when you consider the prizes that FFOC is offering. If you are one of those people who manage more than one fantasy football team each season, you shouldn't be concerned of making one of those teams part of the FFOC. Don't forget, that our 3 pak offers seperate prizes for teams that draft in July and August.

Thanks for your interest in our game Paul. Good luck, and good drafting!

Stan

Anyway hope to see everyone there so I don't get screwed on the money I used to sign up.

The Fanball / Cdm support line guy said that the contest is a joint effort with a third party based in Las Vegas. He wouldn't say who it was b/c the 3rd party doesn't want it public at this time. The Fanball guy made it sound like it should be easy for me to figure out who the big wheel in LV behind this venture is but I said I'm a dumb Cdn!

It doesn't specify which LV Hotel is the host or that would help.

Anyone have an idea who this 3rd party LV based entity/person is?

------------------------------------------------------------------The Hotel listed on their initial Web information page before this new website was the Bellagio. Now it just says a Las Vegas Hotel without specifying which one.Bellagio is owned by Steve Wynn. Don't know if that's the LV based 3rd party but he is certainly a Big Wheel in Vegas.

I found the old quote of which hotel . I posted this at the Fantasy Football Player Championship boards when it came out a month ago

"Top 15 Entrants Compete at the Grand Prize Event in Las Vegas

The team owners of the top 15 teams in the Fantasy Football Open Championship will receive an *all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas and stay at the prestigious Bellagio Las Vegas. Among those 15 participants, a total of $1,731,000 will be given away with prizes ranging from $5,000 to the Grand Prize of $1,000,000. The top three tournament winners will receive $1,000,000, $350,000 and $150,000. See Prizes for the complete prizes awarded."

I just joined this league, sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Especially with the flex option of QB. Anyone thinking about strategy with this?

For the price, almost seems like a steal joining this. Hope it all works out, it's my first high stake league!

I don't believe he owns the Bellagio any more. He built it, but MGM Grand own it now, I think.

I just learned that I drew No. 4 in the very first FFOC draft Wednesday morning.

10 teams, no PPR, start 10 (QBs can be used as flex), pretty much standard scoring (with QBs getting 1 point for every 25 yards passing) and 20-man rosters with position limits (including only 6 RBs and 6 WRs).

Should be fun.

The first draft is officially over.

Some kinks with the software early, but once they fixed it the draft went well. Good group of owners who really know their stuff. Age range went from 15-57 in our draft.

I really recommend this. Seriously, a million bucks to the winner? That's crazy.

Doing my 1st draft (of 3) in just less than an hour. Got the 8 spot, meh. Anyway what where the software kinks I should be aware of?

I'd also be interested in any tips with the draft that the first guys could give. I know it sucks being the guinea pig, hope it went well. Any help would be appreciated by your fellow FBGers!

Going by memory since the draft itself and our rosters have not been posted yet:

QBs go early (top 6-7 off the board by end of round 2), but then just kind of stop. With the flex option, I think everyone wanted to get one just to be sure.

RBs in the first round, then wr/qb/rb split, then wrs for most of the 3rd. MJDIII lasted until the 3/4 turn.

Other than that, a lot of different strategies in my draft. Had at least one 'pro': guy claims to have been published on various sites. His drafting seems to support it.

Biggest piece of advice though is to get to the draft room early and familiarize yourself with the way it works. QBs are ranked inordinately high on their system, so if you get messed up with the system, you could end up screwed. Use the chat: seems admin personnel are monitoring drafts for errors or collusion and can step right in. We had the 4th pick lock on autodraft and he posted that he want SJax but couldn't get off auto. He ended up with Brees. They backed up the draft and fixed it (good group of guys realized what the problem was and let it happen. Guy at 9th had gotten SJax! imagine...).

Overall, a real good experience once it really got rolling.

I'm not usually a "wait on a quarterback" type. I've never believed in it because the position scores so highly and I generally fare OK in my leagues with that strategy.

But in this case, I had no choice.

I went A.Peterson at 1.04 (Brady had gone 1.01). By the time we got back to me at 2.07, the names of Brees, P.Manning and Palmer (in that order) were already off the board. I couldn't bring myself to taking Roethlisberger that early so I went with the No. 2 WR in my rankings (Wayne).

Roethlisberger went right after that at 2.08. Then McNabb at 2.09. "This is crazy," I thought at the time. I still refused to play along, so I selected Ryan Grant at 3.04 (yes, two RBs with Week 8 byes, stoopid me).

At this point, the QB craze slowed down considerably. I chose Burress at 4.07 and Witten at 5.04 before I gave in and picked Eli Manning at 6.07. I figured since this is a nine-week regular season (Week 10 is the league championship game) and Eli usually starts off strong, this hopefully was a good pick.

My other two QBs (there's a three-QB roster limit) were Matt Leinart (8.07) and Kurt Warner (11.04).

Defenses also went earlier than usual, although not near as early as QBs. But you do want a good one because you get penalized if your D gives up too many points. I went with Indy at 12.07, after most of the "name" Ds were long gone.

Hope this helps a little.

Sounds like you played it great, purestrength, with the way the players fell to you.
Thanks. My main disappointment was not getting Chester Taylor as a handcuff for ADP. Someone else took him at 8.04 (74th overall). Maybe I should have taken Chester at 7.04 when I had the chance, but I liked getting Greg Jennings as my No. 3 wide receiver there instead. (We start three WRs.)Taking Chester in the 70s just seems waaaay too early for a non-Peterson owner. But maybe I don't know shyt. We'll all find out in about two months.

I think you played it right. You have to swing for the fences in this thing. Handcuffs are nice, but your searching for the perfect combo. AP and Jennings > AP and Chester

For anyone who cares, the guy with the No. 1 pick went Brady at 1.01, Fitzgerald at 2.10, TO at 3.01, Reggie Bush at 4.10, S.Holmes at 5.01, Willie Parker at 6.10 and Delhomme at 7.01 with his first seven picks (plus Minnesota D at 9.01).

Little surprised at a few things in the draft:

1st round:

LT

Peterson

Brady

Jackson

Moss

Westy

Addai

Portis - my pick, would have gone Gore if PPR.

Gore

Manning

3 non RBs. Maybe it shouldn't surprise me, but I think the scoring system isn't very friendly to QBs (TDs = 4, 25 yds passing = 1, INTs = -1).

3 DST taken by the end of round 8.

2 teams took 2 QBs (to use as flex) in first 4 picks and at least 1 other had 2 QBs before filling starters at RB.

Gates went significantly higher than any other TE. 4.01 pick, next TE not drafted until 6.04.

Jurb, was this the Wednesday afternoon draft? As I mentioned earlier, Brady went No. 1 in ours Wednesday morning.I think there are two more Friday. I'm entered in another one Sunday evening, with the No. 6 pick.

Yup, Wednesday at 6 pm EST.

I just signed up for 3 teams.

Here is what I can tell you from my end:

These guys are VERY SERIOUS about making this event happen. I can't disclose who is behind this, but they have money...a lot of money.

They have taken two page color ads in virtually every fantasy magazine. They just signed a big advertising deal to be in our newsletters and on the website. They are backed by CDM and Fanball who have a solid history of running large scale contests.

My first take on this was just like everyone elses. This will take 20,000+ teams to break even. That is unprecedented territory for a fantasy football contest. But paying a million dollars to the winner for an event that costs $125 to enter isn't close to anything anyone has ever tried either. From my talking to the founder of this, this isn't something they are taking lightly. They have a multi-year strategy in place to make this the biggest contest in fantasy football by a wide margin. They expect (and I concur) the second they pay the million dollars out this year, this thing will grow significantly in years 2 and beyond.

As part of my interview series, I plan to talk to the people behind this contest so we can ask the tough questions everyone wants to know.

I can't guarantee a first-run contest will come off. Especially not one of this magnitude, but I know these guys are as serious as a team can be about making this happen.

Thanks for posting this David. I have 3 teams in this also, and have already drafted one. It is good to know that those in the industry also believe in this ownership team. I have heard rumors of the money behind this contest, and joined immediately.$125 for a shot at a million? I'd take that in a heartbeat. Hey, 1 in 10 shot of doubling your money in each league isn't bad either.

I signed up for this yesterday, but got no confirmation email or any type of acknowledgement. did you guys who signed up get an email immediately?
