Hiawatha Lipschitz
True story -- Long ago I had a friend who stayed up late at night watching TV ads and getting suckered into buying stuff he didn't want. But he was an avid fisherman (as I was) and he loved when the new Bass Pro Shops catalog came out every year, and money spent on fishing isn't wasted money so I decided to help him out. I filled out a paper form to get him a free catalog and sent it to Bass Pro Shops, and let him know to expect it. Never heard anything about it for months after that until one night he called me all irate. It seems he had a question about an order and called Bass Pro Shops to ask particulars about price, and the helper person asked him where he was getting his prices from. He told her it was from his catalog, and she asked for the member number on the catalog label which he gave her. She said "OK, thank you Mr. Lipschitz. I see where you're seeing the price and we'll honor that." And at that point he got irritated and asked why she was calling him Mr. Lipschitz. She told him that was the name that catalog had been mailed to and should be on the label, which he had never looked at. It was then he discovered I had sent the catalog to Hiawatha Lipschitz at his address. At this point he was irate "Why are you calling me Lipschitz? My name is Gerald Lastname!" to which the helper person (bless her) replied "No, your name is Hiawatha Lipschitz. I can see it right here on my computer."
He was so ****ing mad at me. He died of a brain tumor several years ago. Miss you, Gerry. Long live Hiawatha Lipschitz.
