FINALLY NFL TRIES TO END SCOURGE (1 Viewer)

It only took about 100 years, but the NFL is at least going to make some effort to keep these picks from getting spoiled. Always the worst part of the draft IMO.

I'm sort of indifferent. Not sure it matters either way. These days, now that I have 2 kids, I'm lucky to see 30 minutes of the draft where I fast forward through what I recorded.

Great news, I love the podium suspense and hate how ESPN/NFLN always spoil it now in an effort to one-up the other.

From the thread title, I got excited since I was hoping you were going to tell us that Berman had been removed from ESPN's draft coverage. THAT will be a glorious day, if it ever happens.

People still listen to Berman?? Can't think of a more played out schtick than that guy had (5+ years ago last time I've watched/heard anything from him)

Berman used to be the problem with this stuff. Now it's Schefter, LaCanfora, and all the other twitter assclowns that just want to be first.

I would LOVE to see the suspense still there. I hate watching some kid on a phone, grabbing for a hat, follwoed by 30 seconds of 3 announcers trying to talk over each other to get their point in as Goodell strolls across the stage.

When I was younger, you literally glued yourself to the TV (if you could and wanted to watch), because you waited for the Commish to announce it. You timed your snack runs, errands, etc around the teams when they first went on the clock. It was good (and real) suspense.

I hope they can do it.

I also thought this was what the thread was about. I'm sad that it's not.
Its amazing how initially cutting edge and revolutionary ESPN was with Patrick, Berman, Scott etc and now its just some SNL skit. Its like the executives refuse to believe how bad the channel has gotten.

Not that NFL Network is that great, but compared to ESPN it sure is. I just pretty much never watch ESPN anymore. But this is the one time of year (draft time) where I try to catch parts of shows just to see what Kiper and McShay and Schefter/Mortensen have to say. But it's just unbearable. Trey Wingo is maybe a bigger clown than Berman. And what happened to Suzy Kolber? Did she have a stroke or something? She can't seem to get out a complete sentence anymore. The whole network is just disgusting to watch.

They were the only game in town back in the day.No other choice back then.

What difference does it make really whether Roger announces it or one of the networks announce it 30 seconds early? Don't we all watch to see what the picks are anyway?

I personally like seeing the kids on the phone getting the call. It's probably the most important moment in most of their lives, and I find their reactions interesting. I'd rather watch that than Berman's fat neck, Kiper's hair talking about how good or bad a pick is, or Goodell strolling up to the podium.

There really isn't that much suspense.

The way I see it, there are two kinds of sports fans.

Type A: You're stuck working on the night of the big game. You of course, DVR it. You stay off the Internet, you turn off your phone and you avoid humanity because you want to experience the game once you get home as if it were live.

Type B: Same situation, you may or may not DVR it. You constantly check your phone and box scores, ask people for updates, listen to the radio, etc. You want to know immediately what is going on.

Being a movie buff, a writer, and someone who loves suspense, I am 100% Type A. The moments aren't as exciting if you know what happens. I would love if the NFL followed through with this.

Exactly. I've barely watched the draft in recent years because it has been rather pointless with the spoiled picks and rehashed commentary of the same players over and over. Instead of discussing the player who was drafted they go on about someone who hasn't been picked yet.

Love that video. We need a new version with Vernon Gholston in there.

You guys are killing me, you'd be eating it up if it was Gruden (the physical manfiestation of the least funny sports related jokes).

Well, there is nothing that says the Commish can't announce the pick and THEN they show the reaction that happened 30 seconds ago at the kid's house. For those of us that are on the "want to see it unfold live" side, its just a matter of watning to see it as it should be; without spoilers and without the feeling that people are tripping all over themselves to try to beat someone else to the sccop 7 seconds prior. It just makes it messy.

Instead of a guy coming up and saying "here it is", you get this stuff where you see 4-5 guys trying to cram in a bullet, talking over the other guy, a rushed video clip goes up and shows the same damned 4 hilites of a guy for hours, etc. Its like Spoilers in movies. You tune in to see it unfold and to see "Player A just got picked by the Lions" and then to see the reaction, and then come back and talk about THAT player. But instead we get the sccop, then a reaction, THEN it gets announced, then its nothing but "best players available left...

It just seems like the real moment is swept under the rug.

We live in such an instantaneous gratification society these days that I'm sure alot of younger fans probably accept this as the norm and what they prefer, but there is something to be said for the "good ole days" when you let the moment build up and then you talk about what just happened. Report the news; don't manufacture it. Sometimes, these guys on Espn are talking about player x possibly being traded to another team in another deal before the Commish gets uto the podium to announce he was drafted. I know when you go watch a horror film, everybody dies except one person at the end, but I don't want the opening credits to show the lone survivor.

I guess I just don't get why everyone is so bent out of shape about it. I tune in to see the picks and get a little more info about the kids coming out of school. It's not like they're revealing the end of a movie and spoiling everyone's good time. We all know roughly who's getting picked and where they're likely to go.

Video clip of Morris Claiborne on the phone.

Berman: Looks like the pick is Morris Claiborne.

Berman turns toward the podium. 10 seconds later.

Goodell: In the 2012 NFL entry Draft, such and such team selects Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU.

Then they talk about the kid for a while, show some highlights, and we wait 15 minutes for the next pick.

What's the point of the commissioner announcing the picks then? Why go through all this big song and dance production if the only reason we watch is to "find out who gets picked"? ESPN could easily just run it on the bottom crawl of the Raptors vs. Pacers game.To me, I like watching at least a part of the draft every year and it really is annoying waiting 10 to 15 minutes inbetween picks and then having these hacks try to scoop the commissioner by 5 seconds. I just don't see what the point is to spoil the picks. You're not exactly breaking hard news here, LaCanfora. This ain't going win you any Pulitzers. Just let the draft play out naturally...like it used to.

For some of us it is. I am to the point that I would rather not watch it at all than to have the drama of the event taken away from me.

Because
by the time the commish called the player's name. They can still show the nice family stuff and player reaction after the player is picked, but nothing is more awesome in sports than fans voicing their shock (whether good or bad) in unison.

Then get rid of Goodell altogether and let Berman announce the picks. I'd be fine with that but way it has been done recently destroys any suspense and ruins any reason to watch the draft live.

Have any of these guys ever really spoiled any kind of true surprise picks? Maybe they have and I haven't noticed it, but it doesn't seem like they know anything more than the rest of us really.

We've all done a hundred mocks, know team needs, and drafting tendencies.

It seems like they spoil a few of the obvious picks. "There have been 15 guys drafted, these guys are left, these are the team needs, they have to be going (insert player's name) here."

I remember being in absolute shock last year when Locker and Ponder went early. I can't imagine how fans of those teams felt. Were those picks spoiled? I'm sure there were plenty of Viking draft parties where the entire room went "What the ####?!" whether Berman dropped the hint early or not.

Anyway, it's a dumb argument. If the NFL wants it that way I'm sure that's how it'll be. Let the commish announce the picks and be done with it.

Have they spoiled any surprise picks??? Haha c'mon man, it happens all the time! Dez Bryant was a huge surprise, but the networks were in his house speculating for 3 minutes before the commish even called his name. And the very next pick, before we could get any thoughts or analysis on Bryant OFFICIALLY being drafted, we were already in Tebow's house watching him talk on the phone and putting on a Broncos hat. It'll be a more exciting event if they cut these spoilers out.

This is the best change the NFL has made in some time

I can't understand you guys who aren't upset when a pick gets spoiled before the Commish announces it.

It totally and completely sucks. I've been looking for ways to beat this for the past few years. It's to the point where I'll watch the TV out of the corner of my eye (with the sound off)... and I'll only turn the volume up again when I see Goodell start to speak at the podium. People who don't understand this... don't understand this. And it's impossible to explain it.

Kind of how I felt smiling and in a good mood, just relaxing in the swimming pool...waiting on pick #7....and they flash to Darrius Heyward Bey and his family and he slaps a Raider hat on...."No! ####! f u Al!" and I'm getting a sharp pulsing pain in my forehead...and then the pick comes in and....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

they shuld put berman and warren g sapp in a room together by 8 o clock warren would have accused berman of outing bountygate and then they would both have ate eachother problem solved no fuss no muss take it to the all you can eeat buffay at old country buffay brohans

"SWEET SASSY MOLASSY! The pick is IN! And here comes Commish Godell baaack baaaack baaaack to the podium to let the 49ers select Vernon Davis..."But this point, we've seen Vernon Davis on his cell phone crying with his mom. And now in 2011, 26 'insiders' have tweeted and re-tweeted the pick.I really hope they can keep the cat in the bag and give Godell back his thunder. Just not sure what the talking heads will discuss in the minutes between picks.

The easy answer is to tell the networks that they cannot air the vids of the phone calls, etc., until after the selection has been officially made. Then they can spend those minutes with "and now we'll show you X's reaction" and talk about the pick. Sure, the tweeters will get it out first (unless you somehow require a contract to attend the show and they have the security measures to actually remove people that violate it), but if you don't want to be spoiled, you just don't pay attention to it and just watch the show.

Sorry guys, I am among those who don't get the issue.

So we know the pick "ahead of time" as it is now? But what does that even mean? So the team has MADE their selection just seconds before we find out about it. That's when it "happens". You could just as easily say the commish is late rather than the announcers are early.

As some of you mention, the cool parts are knowing what the selection is (regardless of how soon you find out), and sometimes seeing the reactions of the players (again, whenever that happens).

Personally, I'm just as intrigued whether I found out via an announcer or the commish. Yeah, it makes the commish announcement a bit anti-climactic, but that announcement isn't really the "meat" of it anyway.

The thing that bothered me in the past more than someone saying they knew factually who it was or them showing the kid on the phone was when Berman would say crap like "I have a feeling it's going to be so-and-so." And then of course it was. This was back in the day, and he was trying to pass it off like he was some expert, when clearly that wasn't the case.
