Outside of the kiln being Shelley Long's rear-end, that's horrific. I'd sooner burn one dollar bills.

Been getting a lot of smoke into the living room whenever we open the doors..any suggestions?
What do you have, a fire place insert? A wood stove? (I'm guessing it's one of these.) The issue, if it is one of those, is likely the rope gasket around the inside of the door that seals the door to the plate. You'd just need to go to a fire place store (they're around) and tell them what type of stove/fire place you have and they'll be able to sell you the gasket. You'll also need the gasket cement to replace the gasket cement you'll have to scrape off (not a quick task).
no insert, just a huge opening
Teehee

Hard woods are less smoky than softer woods.

Putting the fire grate up on blocks will help by getting the fire closer to the chimney.

Turn off the furnace when you're burning if at all possible.

Open a window for the first ten minutes or so while you're burning.

Smoke in your house is from:

1. Not enough of it being drawn out of the chimney;

2. Smoky (usually soft) wood;

3. Lack of oxygen to the fire.

If you want to burn the charred wood, wait until you have a roaring fire with unused wood, and then add. Start your fire with kindling wood, it will heat the flue and should help with the smoke issues.

In all honesty, it sounds like you have wet wood. Also, there is no expiration date for wood.

$400 for a cord?!?!? That's insane. I have 9 cord split out back, hardwoods oak, locust, cherry and beech. Probably enough for this year and some of next.

Woodstove rocks, haven't turned heat on yet, usually go 2+yrs between propane purchases. I haven't purchased wood in 4 yrs, the storms here have left a lot of free clean up. I have another year worth of wood in logs that need to be cut and split.
Holy crap, you need 9 cord for a season?!?!?! Do you have any other heat source in your house???? Do you live in the mountains with mountain people?

You must be married then.

I will try putting the grate up on some blocks tonight to see if it helps and will open a window..

Check out the free section of Craigslist.

This might not work well in Brooklyn, but even a little outside of the city lots of free wood for the taking.

Been splitting my own for years. It doesn't go bad in 8 weeks. Might not even go bad in 8 years if it's covered and off the ground (don't just have it sitting on dirt). Off the ground and covered via tarp or in a carport or covered area you'll be fine for at least 2 years.
tell that to the termites, wood ticks and pine beatles. :bye:

I'll burn 5-6 cord a winter. We have propane forced hot air but don't use it.

:lmao:
