Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (2 Viewers)

Southern Cali here and we have both In and Out /5 guys. While I prefer 5 guys, the best burger I've had was in the OG Hodads.

https://hodadies.com/

Airport location is just ok for some reason, Petco Park location is pretty good, Downtown SD location is really close but the best one is in Ocean Beach.

Hodads was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, wasn't it?

I am not an anti-Fieri guy, btw. I love what he does for awesome local restaurants that would otherwise be unknown to the larger world, actually.

Yes...and the locals hate him for it. Lines were so freaking long for about a year or so. Pissed us off to no end..lol. Now the lines are just long.

Indeed. I absolutely figured that happens. Sort of bittersweet. I wonder if the franchising is also helped along by the publicity, too, which sort of ruins the local flavor of the places.

*Sigh*  Such is the problem with an otherwise well-meaning act

It's weird how the taste and style are somewhat lost to completely different from place to place as well. I thought maybe it was cheapness but the ingredients seem fresh and whatnot. As a side note baseball fans would absolutely love Petco Park the food and beer choices are great and the venue is top notch. You WILL spend a lot though for each.

We got one sometime last year in Munich.  Been there twice.  Probably will go wherever I'm at the mall which it isn't often.  Decent fix so I don't go crazy when I'm stateside.

Are you guys really this poor?
I am poor by FBG standards.

But my wife and I hit up 5 Guys once in awhile. It's delicious!

We don't eat fast food often at all, but I was late from work cpl weeks ago and hit Wendy's drive thru for us.

Her salad , my single with cheese, 2 broccoli and cheese baked potatoes was $18.

Would've picked up 5 Guys but it was out of my way

Too bad. San Diego and the surrounding areas are really a pizza desert for somebody like myself who lived for a significant amount of time in the New Haven/New York area.
Even though there are a few places I'd call pretty good, you are correct. I like thin crust though, chicago style is just goop thrown into dough to me.

It's really all about tacos here. As well as it should be. Although Austin TX is trying to rival that. lol
Indeed. And I've noticed the locals tend to go for the fish tacos, actually. Should give really give the native cuisine a try, but I'm just not much on them. Give me carne asada or ground beef any day.

I know just about every taco joint in San Diego Ca. If you plan on coming here anytime in the future shoot me a PM and I'll direct you to some of the best. Which will mean that the places will vary wildly from downright ugly outside and in to reasonably quaint. lol A lot of the visitors I have directed think it's Rubios or bust. That is not the case at all. I like fish tacos but my fave is birria or barbacoa. Carne asada is crazy hit and miss here. I know a few locales that will treat you right. For ground beef try Ponces in Kensington. It's hard to park there and make reservations as this 50 yr old restaurant is always packed.

When did five guys get multiple sizes for fries? Also why would the dummy behind the counter not ask you what size you want and automatically just give a you a small?

I used to go now and again for an order of cajun fries. I liked them and could justify the high cost cuz it was so many of them. Some now, some later. Now it is the classic american scam. Change the size, pretend youbare iffering a choice for better value.  Piss off five guys. Never going again.

Awesome. Will do. I live an hour north of San Diego, so I might be down there soon for an event, show, etc.

Five Guys' pricing, wait!

eta* Fifteen bucks for a fast food meal is getting ridiculously expensive. It's now prohibitively expensive for two to eat at about thirty dollars. I'm not that poor when it comes to a food budget, just not crazy about spending fifteen or so (at least) for fast food.

Last month I was craving a burger and happened to be walking by Five Guys so I broke down and went in. They moved the peanuts right up front near the door, I guess so you could have some while waiting in line. There was no line so I skipped the peanuts. Headed up to the register and was met with silence, just a dude looking at me. I looked back and asked if i should order. He nodded. I ordered the cheeseburger and regular fries. He asked me if I wanted 2 patties. I said i wanted the cheeseburger. He told me the cheeseburger comes with two patties. I told him I wanted whatever the "cheeseburger" was. He turns toward the grill and screams "TWO PATTIES!!" Asks me if I wanted a shake. I say no. Total is $15.20. I grab some napkins and stuff to go. Take a seat. Nobody else in the joint. About 8 people working behind the counter, making burgers and fries for the invisible customers i guess. Took about 15 minutes. Finally get my greasy bag and headed out the door. Homeless guy standing near the door asked me for $$. I said I have no cash but directed him to the free peanuts that were right next to the door.  He asks, "they're free?" I give him the thumbs up. Guy went right in. I didn't stick around to see how it turned out but hope he filled his pockets with free, delicious peanuts.

Burger was fine. I got it with everything. Fries seemed under cooked. I ate it all. See you in a few years Five Guys.

I did hodads in OB not that long ago. So good.

Used to love it and laughed at the people in here complaining about the price. It's ridiculous what they charge now. Silly prices. Won't be going back.

It's not fast food.

Haven’t been to five guys in years but we moved recently and one is nearby so I went a few weeks ago. Because of this thread I audibly laughed out loud when I walked in and the place was completely empty. Like nipsey said there was probably 8 people back there working. They lined our burgers up on the assembly line like they had 35 orders to fill. I laughed at that too.

It was good. I’d go back. I asked for the fries a little more cooked and they were damn good. I don’t remember it being expensive but we go out a lot for Greek or Thai food so it probably felt super cheap in comparison.

Liar.

Your profile says you are from Ohio. So am I. I just used their online ordering site and the location closest to me: https://order.fiveguys.com/menu/dublin

Bacon Cheeseburger: $8.59

Little Fries: $3.49

Regular Drink: $2.59

Total: $14.67

Tax: $1.10

Total with tax: $15.77

The Cheeseburger is only $0.30 less than the Bacon Cheeseburger, so the facts support Johnny Rock's post. Please provide evidence of yours, and I'll apologize for calling your a liar.
Such fiestyness!  Call me what you want.

West Chester, OH (north of Cincy) - which isn't as expensive as Dublin area.

Bacon Cheeseburger: $8.19

Little Fries: $2.99

Water: $0.00

Total: $11.18

Tax: $0.73

Total with tax: $11.91

It's not exactly $10, but not that far off either.  Dr has me off of Soda, so I only get water when we go out to places like these.  Add in the Little Cheeseburger for the wife ($5.39) and a Dr. Pepper for her ($2.39), and the two of us can eat for $20.19 after tax.  The fries are more than enough for the two of us.  That was my original point that started this, in that the two of us could eat there for about $20, which to me isn't that bad.  I don't call 5Guys fast food, and if/when I want a good burger, this is my place of choice.

Except you said, “I can get a Bacon Cheeseburger, small fry and a drink for about $10.” Just sayin.

They didn't scream at you when you walked in the door?

I just walked by the Five Guys near me and not a soul in the place. 1:30pm. The Chipotle that's a few doors down had a line of about 15 people. It was so dead in Five Guys I thought it might be closed so I pulled on the door a little just to see if it would open. It does open a crack **and I hear at least three guys who were working behind the counter yell "ONE TOUCHING THE DOOR!!!!!" It completely startled me so I let go of the door handle and scurry away. I'm about 15 steps down the sidewalk and I hear a guy come bursting out of the place calling after me. "Sir! Sir! Please come back in. We didn't mean to scare you! Sir!" I give him the "I'm good" wave and continue walking. The guy won't stop calling after me and now he's running. Now I'm freaked out so I start running. We go about a block and a half almost full sprint and he's gaining on me, still screaming "Sir! Sir! Please stop!" I start noticing these projectiles flying by my head. It takes me a few seconds to figure out what they were and what they were were peanuts! Guy is whipping peanuts at me! They start hitting me in the shoulder, the legs, the back of the head, all over my body. This is my Nam, I'm thinking. One catches me perfectly in the back of the neck and must've nicked my spinal chord because everything goes numb and I fall to the ground. Guy calls over a few other workers, they scoop me off the ground and carry back to Five Guys. I'm like "why the hell are you guys doing this?" but I can't speak, I'm just giving them that kind of look. They carry through the door at which point other workers inside yell "LIMP BODY IN THE DOOR!" They plop me on a chair, put some peanuts in my lap and slide me over to the register. Guy behind the register asks how I'm doing today. I don't answer. Anyway, I got the bacon cheeseburger and regular fries. $15.75!!!!

**story made up from this point on

Swordfight indeed.

Five Guys is indeed expensive.

But then again, so is McDonald's.  $37 for 2 Happy Meals, 1 "adult" combo, 1 Filet-o-Fish, 1 Quarter Pounder, 1 chocolate shake

You are moving the goal posts.

Here is your quote:

I can get a Bacon Cheeseburger, small fry and a drink for about $10.
Now you are saying you can get a Bacon Cheeseburger, small fry and a drink and a water for about $12.

What makes a place "fast food"?
It used to be there was "fast food" (counter service and fast) and "full service" (table service and slow).

The last decade or two developed what is called "fast casual", which is the combination of the counter service from "fast food" and the "slow" from "full service".

Having said that, I'd rather go to Red Robin. You can get a burger, fries and a drink there for around the same price as Five Guys after the tip.... and actually receive table service. And you don't have to hear the staff shout from behind the counter, "NUMBER FIFTY EIGHT!!!!...... NUMBER FIFTY NINE!!!!.... NUMBER SIXTY!!!!!..... HEY FIFTY EIGHT IS STILL HERE!!!!.... FIIIIIIIFFFFFTTTYYYYY EEEEEIIIIIGGGGGHHHHTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
