Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

Never had a dry burger, never had fries that were too greasy. I only eat Five Guys if I'm on the road and absolutely have to eat or I have a blistering hangover. It's perfect for the latter. Love the fries with vinegar. Reminds me of the beach as a kid.

Dry? What?! Yea, no, that is not a Five Guys hamburger.
It was both times I went and the fries were marinated in grease.Different locations too.
Yea even if you excuse the dry burger, what about the limp fries? They all stuck together like play-do or something.
They're boardwalk style fries.
Fresh cut right? I feel like they are local as well with a sign stating which farm they got the potatoes from that day, right?

Huh?? Never had that happen with my fries.I also think the comments on 5G's fries being undercooked, soft, limp are the biggest overstatement of this thread.

Moved from CA two years ago. Big In N Out guy.

Went to the Five Guys in downtown Boise today for the first time.

Not bad at all, and basically had the usual DD, fries and drink. It's just not as good as In N Out.

Could not believe how expensive it was. $23.50 for the two of us that is normally around $11.85 at In N Out. $10 more for a few more fries?

In my experience I would estimate 30% of the fries are good the rest are mushy. I think that is why they give so many so at least you will get a regular sized order of good ones.

We had two small fries in those cups. They gave us so many extra, that I couldn't get the burgers out of the bag and they went all over the place as I had to rip the bag to get to the burgers. All I could think was that I was so glad I didn't order a large.

They're pretty rough, but I don't go there for the fries. The last two times I went, I didn't even order any.

Dude, it doesnt even make sense that like 1/3 of them would be undercooked and the rest fine. They all were cooked for the same amount of time. LOL at them giving extra to circumvent people complaining half their fries suck :lmao:

Five Guys is all about the fries. The burgers are fine. I get the little cheeseburger with ketchup and it's fine and all, but the fries are the thing there.

Have had this twice. Have had In & Out about 5 times.

In & Out is better, hands down. It isn't close. I know when I walk into an office if they have Five Guys because there is a very distinctive smell that kinda makes my stomach turn.

For fast food, though, I would still grab a Big Boy over either of these two.

Credibility gone.a) Big Boy is not fast food.b) Big Boy is disgusting. I worked in the Big Boy Commissary for a few months and will never step foot into one again :X

a) If I can go through a drive through to get it, then it is fast food as far as I'm concerned. b) My brother said the same thing about Arby's for years. There is a reason I never worked fast food... well, NOW you can drive through to get Subway, but not when I worked there.I don't think I had much credibility to start with. Also, I must add that I don't care for BB out here in Cali. I go home to the midwest, and I will have it once in a couple week period and I find it better than either of the other two. Maybe because I grew up on it.

2 orders of fries is pretty much the same price as a burger, that wasnt driving up any cost. Overall, 5G's is a little pricy but not terrible IMO. Shark move is to just drink water and save $5, fill it up with soda if you feel like it.

That is interesting. I am from Cincinnati and I can't think of a Big Boy around there that doesn't have a drive through.

Big Boy is no different than Shoney's or Ponderosa to me. Very below average food. I don't see how anyone could compare the two.

I just don't see I&O as the end all-be all burger place that west coasters make it out to be. I think it is a good burger, and a decent price.5G just blows. Reminds me of a fast food Fudruckers. I hate Fudruckers. I had this convo with my GF about why I&O is so glorified out here. She is from Cali and I&O didn't use to be everywhere. When she was growing up, going to I&O was a "trip". 30 minutes to get there and 30 minutes back, so it was a rarity and a treat. Now that they are at every exit in San Diego, I think some of that is lost, but people still hold onto that feeling of going there. Probably the same psychological reason why I would choose a BB. In Cincy, BB was that kind of place for me growing up.

I understand everything you're saying except for Big Boy being evenly moderately good. That place is awful, cheap garbage IMO. I can see how some wouldn't care for 5G. Personal preference, but I don't see how anyone can think In N Out isn't good.

In & Out is good. It just doesn't make me jizz in my pants like a lot of west coasters.I am sure that Big Boy, being franchised, has some very good and some very bad locations. In general, the ones in Cincinnati where I grew up are pretty good food.

Five Guys and In n Out are both good and are usually far and away the best choice for speed/quality around. In n Out blew a major opportunity by not getting to the east coast before Five Guys opened. I even called them about opening a franchise in NYC in '99. Nope. And I've never smelled anything but burgers/fries/bacon in a five guys. Maybe vinegar?

Smells like they're cremating Gandhi in that place.
You guys must have defective 5 Guys, or they were built close to a water treatment plant or something. The one by me smells like Bacon and burgers inside.
That's possible. The one near me has horrible ultra-bright lighting, screaming workers, their own reviews on the wall and they serve peanuts for some odd reason.

Small burger joint just opened by my house. The food is awesome and their burgers are priced just about the same as Five Guys. I don't get this sticker shock just b/c In N Out happens to be really inexpensive.

One of the reviews on the wall said "eat at this place before it becomes a chain".It was from 15 years ago. Good advice.

I'm not sure us west coasters make it out to be the be all-end all burger place. We make it out to be the be all-end all "fast food" style burger place that it is. I don't know many that would consistently choose In n' Out over Umami, Father's Office or other delicious burger restaurants.

As a person who ate at the original 5 guys, and before they franchised, nothing's really changed.

Five Guys and In n Out are both good and are usually far and away the best choice for speed/quality around.
In my experience, In-N-Out has never been fast. There's always a line to order and a good 10 minutes wait to get the food. 5Guys has always been much quicker for me.

I don't use the drive-thru cuz that line of cars looks every bit the cluster-F the line inside is.

The only thing the 5 Guys down the street has going for it is that it's right next to a Ono Hawaiian BBQ. I've never seen a single person eating in that place. Who in their right mind would think it's a good idea to franchise one of those joints? "Hey let's franchise a Ono Hawaiian BBQ and watch the hapaluas roll in." Place must just bleed money.

That's the problem. In n' Out vets know they serve the drive-thru quicker. And, your food is ready when you get to the window.

Guys, you have to remember that the Big Boy franchises are separate chains with no affiliations with each other. Frisch's <> Elias <> Bob's <> etc.

Could not believe how expensive it was. $23.50 for the two of us that is normally around $11.85 at In N Out. $10 more for a few more fries?
2 orders of fries is pretty much the same price as a burger, that wasnt driving up any cost. Overall, 5G's is a little pricy but not terrible IMO. Shark move is to just drink water and save $5, fill it up with soda if you feel like it.
It's not a little price, it's very pricey. When I saw $6+ for the burger, I asked if it included the fries and drink. Gal said, "no". I was in shock. I've never paid $6 total for DD, fries and drink at In N Out.
Any burger value meal at Wendy's or McDonald's that is at least a 1/4 pounder is $6+ for the value meal, so I dont see how its a surprise 5G's is a few $$ more than that

Have you ever been to an In-N-Out? Their Double-Double runs at $3.65 (may have gone up to $4.00). Generally I am getting out of In-N-Out for about $6 with a double double and fries (water drinker here), that is going to run me closer to $10 at Five Guys. These aren't huge sums but In-N-Out is also a better product, or at the very least a comparable one, so the price discrepancy kind of bothers me on principal.ETA: And yes 70% of their fries are mushy. And yes that does make sense, you should be able to figure out why.
