Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

For fast food, though, I would still grab a Big Boy over either of these two.
Credibility gone.a) Big Boy is not fast food.b) Big Boy is disgusting. I worked in the Big Boy Commissary for a few months and will never step foot into one again :X
a) If I can go through a drive through to get it, then it is fast food as far as I'm concerned. b) My brother said the same thing about Arby's for years. There is a reason I never worked fast food... well, NOW you can drive through to get Subway, but not when I worked there.I don't think I had much credibility to start with. Also, I must add that I don't care for BB out here in Cali. I go home to the midwest, and I will have it once in a couple week period and I find it better than either of the other two. Maybe because I grew up on it.
There are no Big Boy drive throughs here in Michigan that I know of... although there is at least one drive in.
That is interesting. I am from Cincinnati and I can't think of a Big Boy around there that doesn't have a drive through.
Yeah, I'm in Cincinnati on a regular basis and all the ones I have seen have them. At least I can give Big Boy credit for having a decent breakfast, but breakfast is pretty damn hard to screw up.

In n out is a regional chain. Why are we always using them as the standard when they only serve about 4 states?

Because they are the Gold standard in all 50 states.Heck, a guy here in Idaho recently tried to copy them and INO threatened him with a lawsuit and he changed his colors.

I agree. I finally tried IN N Out for the first time while on a business trip to Dallas. Yes it was good! But I have no regular access to In N Out on a regular basis, so for me they are no different than other restaurants that I enjoy while frequenting certain cities. They aren't a national brand like Five Guys.

:goodposting: To all you In N Out fanboys...we get it! They have a great burger at a great price. 95% us don't have access to those burgers so we are stuck with other alternatives. I don't see anyone saying that 5 Guys is better than InO and they'd rather spend more money for a burger there. I have no idea how InO does it so cheaply but they do and the rest us are jealous. So please just let us enjoy our overpriced, though tasty 5 Guys and quick pissing in our thread.

how many of these 50 states are inside the borders of California?80 or 90% of us probably have no access to In-N-Out, but I'd bet nearly all of us have access to Five Guys. It's a terrible comparison.According to Wikipedia: In-N-Out serves: California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, TexasFive Guys serves: 40+ states and 6 Canadian provinces

:lmao: :goodposting: I say that as a reformed In n Out fanboy. It's embarrassing how much I ate at the In n Out in Strawberry when I lived in Marin County. Five Guys is good enough though. And if you're spending more than $10, you're doing it wrong. First, you don't need two patties. Oink oink. Small fries and water. It's like six or seven bucks.

Nothing to do with this. If you go to any state, people all know about how good INO is. They tell you, probably because they've had one somewhere along the line.

great.so next time I want a good burger at a reasonable price, I can dream about how great In-N-Out burger is and then punch myself in the face b/c the nearest one is probably over 1000 miles away.

Agreed. My wife and I each get a little cheeseburger, and share a small fries. About $10 for the two of us. Eat at home, so no need to order drinks. Really no need to spend $20 for two people at Five Guys....I can't decide who's worse: Apple fanboys or In N Out fanboys? I guess the Apple fanboys are at least comparing to peer/national competitors.

Quick poll of the 5 people in the office. None of them have had In&Out.

Only thing I miss from my move from CA. Closest is in SLC, 500 miles away.Guess what the first thing we are all doing when we fly back for my daughters wedding in San Clemente two weeks from Saturday?First thing I'll do when I get to Vegas 8/2 for the Real Madrid/Juventus game I'm taking my soccer crazed kid to... LOL

You're from Ohio. I've never once heard of anyone from OH going to CA for vacation. :P

this is like talking to a wall.I like In-N-Out but I can't get it so why talk about it as if it's a viable option? This is like people in Chicago telling people in California how much their pizza sucks and saying they should just go to Lou Malnati's or something.

I can go to INO and get everything I want for $11 for two and not have to eat at home. No way in hell I'm going to 5G and HAVE to take it home.

Went there last night and it was pretty greasy compared to other visits. I noticed that the regular fry does not overflow like it used to. Maybe they want people to buy the large and are not making enough :moneybag: on the regular. Total BS IMO.

I've had In-N-Out. It's great.Just because I can eat something once or twice a year while I'm on vacation doesn't mean it's a viable alternative to the burger chain down the street.

Don't have to take it home. Add in the cost of soda then; still not $20 for two people as some people have said in this thread. And I'm not saying not to go to In N Out, or that Five Guys is a better option than In N Out. My favorite fast food burger chain is Blake's Lotaburger, but I'm not talking about it in this thread because it is only available in New Mexico.

As if what they have in Chicago qualifies as pizza.

OK, so now we're down to In&Out being the gold standard in 49 states...

Five Guys and In n Out are both good and are usually far and away the best choice for speed/quality around.
In my experience, In-N-Out has never been fast. There's always a line to order and a good 10 minutes wait to get the food. 5Guys has always been much quicker for me.
In the drive-thru?
I don't use the drive-thru cuz that line of cars looks every bit the cluster-F the line inside is.
That's the problem. In n' Out vets know they serve the drive-thru quicker. And, your food is ready when you get to the window.
Vets? Oh please. OK, so now you have to eat in your car in some parking lot while I have a table to spread out on. I can sit inside where it's A/C'd or outside if I want to enjoy some sun. Or maybe you drive all way home to eat, in which case the burger bun is soaked through with grease and the already sucky fries are even soggier from getting steamed inside the bag. And there's no need to tell me about ordering the fries well done, it's the only way I order them.

This is like people in Chicago telling people in California how much their pizza sucks and saying they should just go to Lou Malnati's or something.
But, your question was why it was the standard. He's telling you why - because it's a chain that is delicious and priced reasonably. He's not telling you to go to In n' Out instead of Five Guys. He's saying Five Guys doesn't compare favorably.

No, this is like people in Chicago telling people in California how much their pizza sucks and saying that it doesn't compare to Lou Malnati's. And, that would most likely be true.

Yes, vets.I drive all the way home. I live 2 minutes from an In n' Out, so no, the bun is not soaked through with grease or anything else and I get my double double animal style. You could also park your car in the lot, and get out and sit outside on one of the tables. I honestly don't know if In n' Out does because I rarely, if ever, go inside, but lots of places charge more if you get it "for here" rather than "to go." Waiting in a long ### line inside is a rookie move.

it's a chain that probably doesn't cover 10% of the area that Five Guys is available in. It's a ridiculous standard.Five Guys might not compare favorably to lots of places, but that's not really the point. Compare it to other national chains and it does pretty well.

Great, In N Out is better and cheaper. Now what? Since the vast majority of us can't get In N Out, where does that leave us? We should just never eat a burger b/c it won't be as awesome as the product from In N Out?

Or maybe we can discuss which NATIONAL chain puts out the best quality burger at a reasonable price.

You eat it more than most of us out here do. I say you're qualified to at least make the comparison. I think the reason everyone brings up In-n-Out is because of the way 5Guys was presented out here. It was billed as an invading contender to In-n-Out so naturally everyone was curious to see how they stacked up. It was a 2nd round KO in the court of public opinion. This thread is probably the only way we can publicly answer the question posed to us as to which place is better.

Saying In-N-Out is good and saying that Five Guys is overpriced and their fries are inconsistent (the good ones are awesome but most are mushy) are separate things. For those of us with the option we prefer In-N-Out, sorry if that offends so much. I promise to stop...probably.

No it's not, because so many people in the non-INO states have had it and want it in their state badly. INO gets massive free pub all the time on national TV. It's a nationally recognized brand, even though only in a few states. It's not in every state because it is privately held and they choose not to go that route, yet...

What's the point though? In N Out rules so Five Guys can never be any good? There are a lot more than 2 burger chains in this world to choose from. In N Out won't open too far away from their processing plants or something. Maybe that helps them keep the cost down and quality up.

Not exactly a business model that every chain can follow if they want to get wide distribution.

In n out is a regional chain. Why are we always using them as the standard when they only serve about 4 states?
Because they are the Gold standard in all 50 states.
how many of these 50 states are inside the borders of California?80 or 90% of us probably have no access to In-N-Out, but I'd bet nearly all of us have access to Five Guys. It's a terrible comparison.According to Wikipedia: In-N-Out serves: California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, TexasFive Guys serves: 40+ states and 6 Canadian provinces
LOL
this is like talking to a wall.I like In-N-Out but I can't get it so why talk about it as if it's a viable option? This is like people in Chicago telling people in California how much their pizza sucks and saying they should just go to Lou Malnati's or something.
In my experience people from Chicago are very personable and understand that Chicago pizza is really novelty that they don't expect to be able to get everywhere they go. They are generally good natured about it and love to talk about their favorite places in Chicago, which I appreciate because it gives me ideas for when I visit (I am a fan of Lou Malnati's myself. Mmmmmmmmm...butter crust) However from transplanted New Yorkers OTOH I get that #### all the time. All the freaking time. The bagels aren't good enough, the pizza isn't good enough, the deli food isn't good enough. If everything in New York is so ####### wonderful then go the #### back! I love New Yorkers in New York (LOVE 'EM), some of the best people ever, but get them outside of the city and they are some of the whiniest, boorish, most obnoxious people in the Universe.

And, that would most likely be true.
it's a chain that probably doesn't cover 10% of the area that Five Guys is available in.

In-n-out won't expand because they insist on every day deliveries to each location from their own plant. They refuse to let quality suffer so they can make a bigger profit. The only reason they expanded to TX was because they built a new plant there and could do the daily deliveries.

They're family-owned and perfectly happy sticking with the markets they're in. There's no drive to make as much money as they can. I like them.

Define area. California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Texas are most likely greater than 10% of area of the country. It's not a ridiculous standard. It's the standard. You can't honestly look at Five Guys (the appearance) and not think In n' Out isn't the standard and isn't the model for what they've done. They've copied everything about the look of In n' Out down to the red and white tiles and added their own tacky touches. And, In n' Out is 40 years older. So, is it sheer coincidence that Five Guys is so similar to In n' Out in restaurant style and color scheme and that they attacked the east coast premium burger niche? I don't think so. I think Five Guys sees In n' Out as the gold standard and is trying to replicate it in their own way, and have simply come up short.

And, I don't think anyone is saying those of you who only have Five Guys should simply boycott it because it is not as good. But, those that are saying they have both as an option are simply saying that they cannot find a good reason to go to Five Guys over In n' Out. If Five Guys is the best you've got in your area, then so be it. My condolences.

I said they were good in my first post  I've heard the cost thing also, especially since Boise is so close to SLC.

IMO, religion has a part in the equation also. Have you ever checked your wrappers and cups?

If I was them, I would not mess with their model at all. One of the most impressive things I've ever seen in business was a Vegas trip last year. We got there for "breakfast" at 11am for the drive to OC. A line of at least 50 out the door. I ordered in 7 minutes and had my food 8 minutes later. It was beyond awesome how fast they moved the line... and that was just inside.

I think they "attacked the East Coast" because they lived in Virginia.

Most of us out here can't even go to In-n-Out, it would take forever. I drove by the closest one on Friday night at about 1:15AM and there were about 35 cars in the drive-thru line. We feel your pain is what I'm saying.

agreed. If I had a choice of both, it would be a no-brainer.But Five Guys is good and the price is not nearly as outrageous as people who don't have access to In-N-Out are making it out to be.

 You live 2 minutes from an In-n-out, yet choose to drive just to use the drive thru? Then your method won't work for anyone that doesn't live close to one, ie 99% of people. So my statement is still correct. And waiting in a long line for overhyped slow food IS a rookie move, which is why I prefer Five Guys.

I've never been greeted when walking into a Five Guys. :excited:
I think he's thinking of Jimmy John's.
The hell I am...
You are the guy that tried to convince me for 90 minutes that Sabarro's was "known for" selling two pizzas smashed together, right? That was you, right?
I honestly thought that's what I was buying 15 years ago when I was a poor college student and considered Sabarro a luxury item....all I remember was two slices of pizza folded on top of one another. If I went their weekly like you, I might have a fresher memory. I've never been to Jimmy John's.
Dude, it's a stuffed pizza. It has the toppings on the inside. They didn't just flip over a pizza on top of another one.
:lmao:

You guys need to start an In n' Out thread apparently. The people that live in populated areas are discussing Five Guys burgers. Yummmmmm.
