Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

I have a friend who when he goes to InNout he has to eat it there because he must eat the fries within a minute they come out of the fryer. Sits alone at a table because he has to have them piping hot. I told him this is serial killer behavior. Won't get them to go.
My cousin has them shove raw potatoes down his throat and then pour boiling oil into his mouth.
Pretty sure they do this at In N Out.

Do this? They invented it.

Upon review of this thread I must be one of the few who actually likes mushy fries.
I think I am with you on that. Maybe that is why I like their bun as well. I like a good roll (like those Umami ones look like), but at 5G, I enjoy the softer bun. Call it mushy, but hey, I like it that way sometimes.

I assume it's shtick but you gotta know that ordering the fries that way is obnoxious and you're likely being ignored. I can't imagine you actually sit in the drive thru line, swish a few around your mouth and deliver a verdict.
I'm going to start doing this.

"Alright, here's your order sir, have a nice day!"

"Hold on, there Betty. Before I pull off, I'm going to make sure my medium french fry order meets my criteria of 'hot, fresh and crispy' and not a moment sooner."

"But sir, there's 17 cars behind you, one of them has spinny rims and the other has a dead deer carcass on the grill. I don't think......."

"ENOUGH! I will expect nothing but perfection from my $4.73 meal!!!! You and EVERYBODY will wait right there. *Inserts three fries, assiduously chews the hot potato goodness, moving them around the tongue so the morsels dance on his delicate papillae, alternating like a boss between salty, bitter, sweet and umami like a truck driver smoothly shifting his 18 gears. He pauses, spits them out of his window and begins barking "GOD DDDDDDDDDDDDAMNNNNNNNNNN IT, Betty! What is this...this...MUSH you've given me? You take these back and you make me a fresh pot of fries that are, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER: HOT. FRESH. AND MOTHER FORKING CRISPY!"

"O.....Okay sir. I'm really very deeply sorry, if you'll just pull up ahead and...."

"DAMN IT GIRL, I'M NOT MOVING AN INCH UNTIL YOU PERFECT THESE FRIES!"
In a thread full of laughs GM just got ahead of Nipsey for thread win. Nipsey has been killing it with the redmeat though so he isn't out yet. But this is a bar raiser. Oh and :lmao:

its called boiling style. In N Out invented this in 1979.

Had a buddy of mine who worked at Wendy's and had a customer come in a give the cashier a big stink over the hamburger he was served to which my buddy was responsible for putting together. He cooked him up a new burger but got a fresh bun and wiped his ### with it before serving it.Person then ate the burger and was asked on his way out how the burger was and he says fantastic. :X

True story.
that's the first guy diagnosed with assburger's syndrome in 1948.

Co-worker and I presently splitting fries.

Also, bill was still over ten dollars even though I didn't get a drink. Burger was damn good (bacon double with everything), but christ it's impossible to eat there for under 10.
By double, do you mean their standard 2 patty burger? Also, neither bacon nor cheese are necessary when you can get so many free toppings. I gave up soda a while ago so getting out of there for 10 or less is fairly easy for me.

I worked at Carls Jr when I was 16 and every so often people would order their fries well done or no salt or something different like that.
Did any order them "Animal Style"?
Some people would order extra patties (or chicken). We charged a $1 upcharge to the Famous Star to get an extra patty, which was cheaper than ordering the Super Star which came with two patties.

Is that Animal Style?

There have been some pretty intense debates about the merits of certain strategies for making 5G cheaper and healthier, but even in this thread, I think we can all agree that ditching the cheese and bacon is a bridge too far.

Phew. This debate about a nationwide chain vs a place about 3% of fbgs have access to almost fell below the top 6 posts.

Thanks pollard.

Grass fed grond beef-$8.99/lb

Og french fries-$4.99/lb

WW burger buns-$3.99 8 pack

cooking you burgers the way you like at home-priceless

There are some things money can't buy but for everything else subpar, there's 5 Guys.

I usually just go cheese.

Regular cheeseburger little fries and a cup for water and I'm under $10 & over 2000 calories.

I get the wind dip and air pudding, no cheese, cup of water and I am out for under $1, sometimes much less and I keep the caloric intake to about 0.

I actually dont think Ive ever got bacon on a burger at 5G's, maybe because the burger is already as much as an hour of minimum wage to begin with, but moreso because it never seemed needed or necessary. Is their bacon that good?

That said, never considered going full hamburger. I need the cheese. I usually get it with grilled onions, grilled shrooms, and A1 so while bacon is always nice, Ive never thought after the fact I wish I had bacon on my burger.

Trying to get out of Five Guys for less than $10 is like playing Black Jack.

"Sir, I have your order as a regular cheeseburger and little fry. Is that correct?"

"Yes"

"Would you like a soda?"

"Ummmmm..... HIT ME!"

"That's $10.68"

"AH ####!"

Some of us don't get off at 3 to go home and cook every day.

I'm really curious now as to how many times some of you eat fast food at either lunch or dinner in a month's time?

For me I would say lunch is in the range of 4-5 times a month, most of the time I bring something in.

Dinner would be maybe 2 and it's usually just because we don't feel like cooking and want something quick.

I eat breakfast and dinner at home but I like going out for lunch. Not always fast food though we hit restaurants as well. So fast food a 2-3 times a week for lunch probably. And that is counting places as fast food that don't call themselves that but are really.

Lunch, maybe 2 times a month, unless you count Chinese, which is what I get most of the time when I eat. I usually don't eat lunch.Dinner, once a month. Maybe twice.

And if you don't count places like Five Guys and Chipotle as fast food, I haven't had fast food in probably two years.

Hard to beat a good buffet for lunch. But I always want a nap afterwards.

There's a place three blocks from my office with a drive through window and a lunch buffet. It's my go to.

Totally agree finding a good Chinese buffet is :moneybag:

Productivity soon after always falls off and I'm usually hungry an hour later but it is great.

Yeah we got one a mile or two from here that has a huge buffet. I love going there. Unfortunately my lunch buddy is one of these youngsters whose parents never exposed them to any real culinary experimentation. Raised on burgers and frozen food. Doesn't like Mexican much, no to Chinese, no to Thai, no to Indian, it's sad actually. But of course she is in for Taco Bell <_< . So when she is not here for lunch is when I go to the ethnic places I like.

As a tangent. Parents please introduce your children to more than McNuggets, hamburgers and microwave meals. I have met so many people who "don't like" so many varieties of food that they have never even tasted. Now no one likes everything. I am no fan of coconut or sauerkraut for instance. But you got to at least get them to try different stuff while they are young.

from the interview I linked earlier,

We've had many of the same vendors since 1986. And they're not the cheapest by a long shot. We stick with what we like. One day, our purchasing guy said he wanted us to switch to a frozen burger product. But we all picked the fresh one in a blind test and stuck with that. We taste-tested 16 different types of mayonnaise to find the right one.

We make the same bun we started with. We hired the old guy who used to bake our bread for the first store, and one of his partners. They work in the Virginia bakery. We have 10 bakeries scattered around the nation. Our bread is baked daily, picked up by 3 p.m., and put on truck or plane so every store gets fresh bread every morning, even if they are 400 miles away from the nearest bakery.
I've never understood why more restaurants do not make their own ketchup and mayonnaise. Heinz and Hellmann's are far inferior to some rather simple homemade varieties that $8/hr employees should be more than capable of making. (And Heinz and Hellmann's are the very top end of what a restaurant would buy commercially.)

It seems to me that the Subway model of baking bread fresh in each store should be superior to the Five-Guys model of shipping buns 400 miles overnight, but baking buns may be a lot harder to do in small batches while getting a consistent quality.
The only thing that prevents the In n Out Burger from being a 10 in flavor is they use an off-brand of ketchup. Not horrible, but thinner and less tomato-y than Heinz. Weird because the ketchup packets are made by Heinz.

Agreed. My buddy was 31 at the time and came over to my house to watch football. I asked him if he wanted a quesadilla and he said he's never had Mexican food but doesn't like it cause it's too spicy. I told him a quesadilla is basically a thin grilled cheese. :lmao:
