Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

Got Shake Shack for the first time on Sunday, really enjoyed it. Got a Single Smoke Shack, cheese fries, and a soda. Burger was delicious, and I really digged the cheese on the crinkle cut fries. About $15, but worth it and would get Shake Shack again.
I DON'T LIVE NEAR SHAKE SHACK WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT IT YOU INSENSITIVE JERK!!!
Five Guys, In-and-Out, Shake Shake 3-way deathmatch to help folks with their daily selections.

Now we got Shake Shake into it? I know I don't live near one of those.
Nothing washes my 5G burger down better than a tall glass of West Coast Envy.
No envy here my friend. I go local and love it,

I went to 5G on Friday - Bacon Burger, little fries, no drink, about 10.18 after tax. Downtown Phoenix. I had 2 peanuts and placed the shells in the garbage because I'm not a filthy animal. The wait was 10 minutes during a solid lunch rush and they would say "We got 3 in!" or whatever when people came in.

Burger was good, better than I&O. If I was walking for a burger and they were next door to each other, I'd pick 5Guys because I think the taste difference is worth the cost. If I was driving, I'd pick I&O because the taste difference isn't significant enough for me to park and go in. If I wasn't commuting and had the time, I'd go ahead and park, though, and hit up 5G.
Then your home would go into foreclosure due to lack of payment.

Had Showmars (wife out with friends and one son asked to go there) on Saturday and got the Big C you recommended. It was fine, but nothing close to 5G. This was at the Providence/485 location, so might be indicative of location.

That said, I like BT Burgers the best out of the ones around me. I like Smashburger, but it is about the same as 5G to me and a little further to go. I heard Burger 21 was decent, but when I went, it was underwhelming at best. All 3 are more expensive than 5Gs because they are or because as much as they are derided in here, the free peanuts are a huge smash with my boys and are a substitute for fries.

Is that "sauce" at the beginning of the "The Sauce" section what folks suggest putting on the In 'n Out fries to make them taste better? :oldunsure:

Just got a burger for lunch from a local chain (Epic Burger)

$5 for "Junior" hamburger and $2 for fries with water. $7 and change for a pretty good meal.

Would like to supplement with some peanuts though.

Our Showmars just opened and I was incredibly disappointed. :kicksrock: I guess they are very different from location to location. Big Daddy's is pretty good if you've never had it. They have one on east blvd and I think there's still one in Ballantyne. Also like The Penguin as well. Though after being on the food network there's always a wait that I'm not sure it's really worth.

Oh I was referring to myself.

I'm jealous I don't have an INO nearby and Shake Shack looks pretty good too.

I don't have Charlotte-level local options around here.

Sorry to hear it is so location dependent. If you guys get up to Charlotte in the South Blvd area try the location on Emerywood. Same manager for over 10 years. Some of the same cooks as well it seems. And they kept the old cooking surface when they remodeled. It's good stuff.

Yeah, I like Bad Daddy's as well. It is a whole other level of expense though since it is a real sit down restaurant. Never been to the Penguin. I think we tried one time and didn't feel like waiting. While the airport location isn't as good burger wise, it is better than the other crap, so I will eat there when I have a late flight.

If you like Bad Daddy's, try BT's. I've only been there a few times, but I think the burgers are as good as Bad Daddy's and the price is far more reasonable if you have kids. We like Bad Daddy's, but haven't been there in a while. With shakes and/or drinks, it seemed like with tip we could never get out of there as a family for under $60-70. I think the last time I went to BT's without the wife, it was under $30 for the 4 of us. Slightly more than 5Gs, but better.

Yeah...we like BT's too, but there isn't one real close to us anymore (same with Bad Daddy's) Wife really digs the SP fries with that sauce that they put on them. BT's is owned by the people who own Hickory Tavern fwiw.

I used to go to that one quite a bit. Always busy and slow. Given the price, much preferred to go to Cooperstown, arrogant butcher, etc instead. Sticklers if I wanted something quick to go.

5G's >>> Smashburger

I just had a bowl of pumpkin soup, a large quinoa salad, a fully loaded smoothie, ginger shot, and a guava tofu cheesecake with fresh berries on top.

$20.81 +tip

I'd say context / options means a lot here, too. SoCal has a driving and burger culture rooted in the 50s onward. There are a ton of pretty good greasy spoon, horn off the grill burger joints. In that context, why bother with In n Out or for that matter other fast food burgers. Although, In n Out being on the small burger side issue more like a McDs old school hamburger just better so I can see this niche.

But on the east coast, we don't have that. We have delis, pizza places and diners which aren't so fast. And as we have diners there's no need to discuss bobs big boy vs Denny's because if you are going to either when you have a fine around, then you are doing it wrong

This is what I mean by the service... Every person I've encountered at every location has been on point. Where else?

With such a large and complex order, I figured the best strategy to achieve my goals without getting kicked out of the restaurant would be to order in waves, always including one simple, anchor sandwich (say, a regular Double Double) along with a few of my "special" requests. My first interaction with the bright-eyed, young cashier named Thomas went easily enough.

"Welcome to In-N-Out."

"Hi—I want to make a kinda weird order, ok?"

"Of course!" he said, almost a little too brightly. I must remember to shed my mistrusting New Yorker attitude.

"Ok. I'd like one regular cheeseburger, with everything on it. Then I'd like one regular cheeseburger with chopped chilis.* Oh, and could I also have a bag of chilis on the side?** After that, I'll need a cheeseburger with everything, split in half,*** along with an order of fries, well done,**** if you can do that."

"Sure we can! Anything else?" He's totally unfazed.

"Uh yeah, I'll take a root beer float***** as well, and... that's it for now."

"No problem. You'll be order number 4 today."

* That's super-hot pickled sport peppers chopped and pressed into the bottom of the burger.

** A small bag with two whole sport peppers.

*** Any burger will be cut neatly in half upon request.

**** Fries cooked extra long.

***** Root beer with vanilla ice cream

Our order arrived a few minutes later, produced exactly as requested. Shocking! At my local McDonald's, the cashier has trouble even getting a single cheeseburger right, never mind special requests!

In-N-Out definitely compensates its employees better than any other chain I'm aware of. Makes it easier to be nice.

I'd say it weeds out the weak ones because there's so much competition to work there. I believe they start them at $11/hr. I've also noticed they attract more younger folks than other chains. You get smarter/better 17 year old kids when you pay more and it's considered a cool place to work.

It looks like 10.00 is their lowest hourly wage if the reports I have seen are right. Go figure pay people more get better service from them.

I mentioned a few pages ago that there aren't any true local burger places around me. Local places that sell burgers, sure. But like you said, delis, pizza/subs, diners and chains for the most part.

Sounds like they have a pretty good employer that already listens and responds to employee concerns. Unions are needed for when that isn't the case.

Got Shake Shack for the first time on Sunday, really enjoyed it. Got a Single Smoke Shack, cheese fries, and a soda. Burger was delicious, and I really digged the cheese on the crinkle cut fries. About $15, but worth it and would get Shake Shack again.
If I did a blind taste test between Shake Shack and In and Out burgers, I wouldn't be able to taste the difference. They are both very good. Shake Shake has infinitely better fries too. But, it's way more expensive and the wait times are horrendous at least at the location by me.

Never had SS, but from pics, the buns seem to be a major step up from INO, and obviously 5G.

Seems like it would be a dead giveaway, whether you are blind folded or not.

I know we will never reach a consensus on burgers before this thread dies completely but do we all agree that the Philly cheesesteak is pretty much a toxic mess?

I mean it doesn't even deserve an honorable mention when discussing iconic city/state foods like NY pizza or California wine, right?

Can we agree that it's probably a step or two below Rice-A-Roni in that regard?

Disagree completely. Have you been to a good cheesesteak place? It's heavenly when it's done right.

That's crazy talk. You clearly have never been to Philly for the real deal, lines out the door all day, every day at spots all over the city. Step or two below Rice-A-Roni.....GTFOutta here

I could do without fans of Philadelphia sports teams, but the Philly cheesesteak is a food the city should be proud of. It's pretty awesome. The reason burgers are more popular is because it's easier to train a minimum wage peon to make a burger right than it is to make a cheesesteak right. Why, I don't know, but cheesesteak chains are pretty bad. You gotta go to a mom and pop place to get a cheesesteak done right.

There are huge lines at concession stands for overcooked hotdogs, watery beer & stale nachos too. That doesn't make them good.

That's because sporting venues know how to milk sports fans into paying high prices for cheap food. Once you are inside a sporting venue, free market principles don't apply.

Dude, get a good cheesesteak. I can't vouch for an amazing place in San Diego, but I thought The Cheesesteak Grill in Oceanside was pretty good and I had a neighbor from Philly who also like it.

Maybe try Gaglione Brothers that's supposed to be good.

We talking NY pizza good, here? Hard to believe that about any food product that is apparently enhanced by Cheez Whiz.

FWIW, it may not be an 'original philly steak', but I hate the Cheez Whiz and go for the version with green peppers, onions and provolone.

It looks like 10.00 is their lowest hourly wage if the reports I have seen are right. Go figure pay people more get better service from them.
You could pay them $15 an hour down here in SFL, wouldn't make a difference.
It is more than just the better fast food worker wage, In-N-Out has a top notch training program that pretty much demands their employees act like Mormons. And as everyone knows magic underpants make Mormons some of the friendliest people on the planet, which is great for customer service (and it's also useful to have a Mormon friend so you always have a designated driver).

Maybe that's the secret behind a good Philly Cheesesteak. Magic Philadelphia Underpants ground up in each sandwich. Can't expect to get a consistent supply of Magic Philadelphia Underpants out here in California.

Yes. I used to work at a cheesesteak place back in college in Arizona and I loved the sandwiches. They used no cheez whiz so I guess it wasn't authentic.

Think about it, you are disrespecting beef and melted cheese on bread here. It's a losing position.

No disrespect intended. Just curious what makes the Philly cheesesteak iconic enough that they need shots of them being made at every televised Eagles home game. Y'know, why are they more special than any other meat & melted cheese sandwich?

Apparently not many of the beef and melted cheese lovers in this thread care very much about the Philly cheesesteak either so I guess they are just filling time with stock footage.

Verdict, nowhere near NY Pizza, California wine, New Orleans Po' Boy, Maryland crab cakes etc. Not sure how it would fare against the wings crowd in Buffalo either. Maybe it belongs somewhere around Butte moose butt sliders (tough to beat moose butt sliders from Butte, I'll tell ya what).

Since we're on the tangent of the arguable appropriateness of city named foods, can anyone explain why St. Louis Bread Company changed it's name to Panera Bread Company? What's wrong with calling it St. Louis?

As usual incorrect. Higher pay leads to more competition for the jobs. You get better people when more people are competing. People are also more motivated, tend to stay on the job longer and tend to give better service when they are paid better.

I agree with all of that but, again, you also need to establish and maintain a corporate culture that promotes good customer service.

Sure. But you have to be realistic based on what you are willing to pay.
