Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

Could not believe how expensive it was. $23.50 for the two of us that is normally around $11.85 at In N Out. $10 more for a few more fries?
2 orders of fries is pretty much the same price as a burger, that wasnt driving up any cost. Overall, 5G's is a little pricy but not terrible IMO. Shark move is to just drink water and save $5, fill it up with soda if you feel like it.
It's not a little price, it's very pricey. When I saw $6+ for the burger, I asked if it included the fries and drink. Gal said, "no". I was in shock. I've never paid $6 total for DD, fries and drink at In N Out.
Any burger value meal at Wendy's or McDonald's that is at least a 1/4 pounder is $6+ for the value meal, so I dont see how its a surprise 5G's is a few $ more than that
Have you ever been to an In-N-Out? Their Double-Double runs at $3.65 (may have gone up to $4.00). Generally I am getting out of In-N-Out for about $6 with a double double and fries (water drinker here), that is going to run me closer to $10 at Five Guys. These aren't huge sums but In-N-Out is also a better product, or at the very least a comparable one, so the price discrepancy kind of bothers me on principal.ETA: And yes 70% of their fries are mushy. And yes that does make sense, you should be able to figure out why.
No, Ive never been to In N Out. Yes, I live probably 2800 miles from the closest one, same goes for a lot of other people in here, so their pricing is kind of a moot point.

In n out is a regional chain. Why are we always using them as the standard when they only serve about 4 states?
:goodposting: To all you In N Out fanboys...we get it! They have a great burger at a great price. 95% us don't have access to those burgers so we are stuck with other alternatives. I don't see anyone saying that 5 Guys is better than InO and they'd rather spend more money for a burger there. I have no idea how InO does it so cheaply but they do and the rest us are jealous. So please just let us enjoy our overpriced, though tasty 5 Guys and quick pissing in our thread.
:lmao: :goodposting: I say that as a reformed In n Out fanboy. It's embarrassing how much I ate at the In n Out in Strawberry when I lived in Marin County. Five Guys is good enough though. And if you're spending more than $10, you're doing it wrong. First, you don't need two patties. Oink oink. Small fries and water. It's like six or seven bucks.
As someone whose had single patties and double patties at 5G's, Id agree but it seems to me the single doesnt have the grease quantity of the double, which makes it about twice as good surprisingly (or not)

Whatever guys. http://www.burgatorybar.com/ is better than In and Out and has way better shakes. Plus there is a bar with TVs there and it's in Pittsburgh. Everytime I am over near the waterworks mall, I go there. I even bring my friends.
Clicked on the link like a half hour ago...Some "no wait" app said they had a 50-60 minute wait...The place looks tempting, but is that for real?!
I've called and asked what the wait is and been told 2 hours before. I didn't go that night. They text you when your table is ready and there is shopping around to bull#### in. Also, there is a bar there so you can have a drink or milkshake and/or try to steal a seat at the bar. Their coffee and donuts milkshake is liquid crack. When I've gone I do the build your own. Made a chipotle burger last time that was possibly the best burger I ever had. (grass fed beef, peppers, avocado, I think onion and I forget which cheese. Their chipotle mayo and I forget which rub on wheat bun. )

QDoba was sued by Chipotle. They had to change a few things. I like them a little better than Chipotle though.Never seen a Moe's.
Really? For what? I had been eating at Q'Doba for a few years before I even heard of Chipotle.ETA: NM...I see it at the end. Whatever they changed works. I like the fajita burritos the most.

I think it was just the guy that owns the three, soon to be four Boise area franchises. I don't think it was a national thing.

I just called the local 5Guys, told them I was Nipsey with footballguys news. Asked them about the smell in the place and the manager replied, "that distinctive smell is the freshest ingredients being cooked to perfection. There's nothing like the smell of a perfectly cooked burger and fries." I asked about the lights but we got cut off before he could respond.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: This inspired me, so I called them and screamed as loud as I could "ONE ON THE PHONE!"

70% of their fries are still mushy. Say what you will about McDonalds but they deliver a consistently great fry for a good value. 5 Guys delivers mostly a mushy mess for a premium. Tsk tsk.

You west coasters might as well go to the Phillipines and take your left coast fast food issues there

Its just awesome to me how the FFA can turn anything into a Civil War. Of Epic proportions. Someone should do a documentary on the FFA and its notorious posters/aliai.

BTW Vote 5 Guys is the ####, and heres a shocker, my soon to be ex wife who is a fitness/workout buff, turned me on to frys with ketchup and mayo...Heavenly goodness there.

I don't hold the fact that you like overpriced mushy fries against you. To each their own. Live and let live. There's a sale at Pennys. And all that stuff.

:goodposting: Maybe one day, people will realize that some folks like mushy fries and some folks like fries burned to a crisp (and everything in between). The comical thing about it is how they think there are right/wrong answers.

People do realize some people like mushy fries. They also happen to recognize that these people are lunatics.
Just as most of us recognize that people who follow the NBA are lunatics.FWIW... I'm not a mushy fry lover, or a 5Guys fry lover (at all), but I do recognize that some people may have a different take on the whole fry situation than I do.

My favorite part is how only X% of the fry serving is one way or the other when they were all cooked together in the same basket more often times than not. I get that some of the fry sizes are different and will yield a mushy/burnt one here or there. That's a product of unequal fry sizes.

They're fried pototoes. If they're not a little mushy, something has gone off the tracks somewhere.
Correct...you want just crispy eat a potato chip
Crispy on the outside and mushy (like a baked potato) on the inside is the ultimate, IMO. Of the major chains, McD's is the most consistent with this...
They also have the most consistent cut, but we all know they aren't "real" potatoes. I love me some McD's fries though :bag:

Please note that I did say that 30% of the fries you get at 5 Guys are fantastic and that 30% is typically about as many fries as you get in a normal order at most other places.

Grew up in DC area, where original 5 guys comes from. Love them, but I'm sure there is a dash of nostalgia that helps there. Boardwalk Burgers and Fries, originally from Ocean City, MD is too legit!!! Their handcut fries are also cooked in peanut oil. If given the choice, I'd choose Boardwalk over 5 guys. Yes the price is high, but some things worth the extra few $$$.

As for the Qdoba, Moe's and Chipotle...Chipotle blows the others away. Their meat is seasoned and is favorable, while the others mask in salsa or sauce. Hands down C >>>> Q & M!!!

The consistency certainly helps.I'm also think they soak them in sugar or corn syrup (and water, of course) before they freeze them. There's a hint of sweetness there that most fries don't have. I've done this step at home a couple of times and it does give a remarkably McD's-esque flavor.

Malt Vinegar or not with the fries?

I like to double dip from the catsup to the vinegar. This is the only place I do this, I think it's from growing up around "Boardwalk Fries" where it seemed like standard practice.

They put several different preservatives and such in their fries. They DO add sugar. As I said, they aren't "real" potatoes.

Yes on Malt Vinegar. One of my favorite things about 5G is that they have Malt Vinegar available (now, if they'd only bust out with some hot sauce too). I normally just keep a nice layer of it on top of ketchup, but I think I'll try that double dip technique next time.

From what I've read here, they fill the fry basket so high, that 70% of the fries aren't cooked the same and turn out mushy because they aren't evenly distributed during cooking, and thus, under cooked. I remember this to be true when I had my ribs take out place. When the basket is not overflowing, the fries rotate in a circular motion within the basket, in a symmetrical manner. It's a beautiful thing to watch. The 30% that get cooked properly are actually trapped by the weight of the 70% mushy fries. People would complain about the 30% being over cooked if it weren't for the liquidated Gahndi smell.

Malt vinegar is only an acceptable condiment when eating fish 'n' chips.

I've never run into the problem much less examined how they cook the fries so I can't confirm any of that. I just thought it was amusing.

This line of thinking has contributed to the under-utilization of malt vinegar. It's simply delicious, and it shouldn't be confined to use on fried fish only.

I like to combine ketchup and tabasco. It gives a little hint of vinegar with some spicy goodness to go with the ketchup.I've never had boardwalk fries.
