Five Most Useful Apps. (1 Viewer)

The #1 used app on my Iphone is by far my Harmony app. It controls every single piece of electronics in my AV closet. TV, Xbox, PS3, Blu Ray, Apple TV, Directv, Receiver and Amp. You do need to purchase a piece of hardware, but its so nice to get rid of every single remote in the house.

Obviously you need the game console controllers to play games, but the app handles watching Netflix, listening to music, etc.

in the early blackberry days it was slow (as was the phone) and in its infancy... the app is gorgeous now. quick, deep, and very customizable.

This KeyRing app might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, thanks.

Anything similar to Llama for the iPhone? Read thru the thread and didn't notice.

ICC (best chess site out)

PF Visual Voicemail

Uber rules (although my ride home during a snowstorm in Philly cost me 160 bucks)

Spotify if you have premium

Ultimate Tabs for the musicians... Look up any songs chords or tablature on demand and save your favorites. During band practice sometimes someone will throw a song out that I don't have sheet music on, it's nice to instantly be able to access a lead sheet on the spot.

Some random person who may or may not know anything says that iOS won't let apps change settings.
Yeah I'm pretty sure this is exactly the kind of flexibility/programmability/control you can have on Android but not iOS.

can someone explain how the play by play works? i cant figure it out

Otis and I are having some serious chess grudge matches on chess time.

No, actually i'm kidding it's been two blowouts. I blew him out, he blew me out.

Either way, it's a fun chess app.

Can you play a Blitz match on chess time? That's why I use icc. All the games are live and carry over to my iPad or desktop as well.

I had it and removed it a couple years ago so I thought I would give it another try. It wants permission to add or modify calendar entries and email my contacts without my knowledge. Is there any reason a sports score app needs to do this?

only if you want to add a calendar entry or share a game with someone

That makes sense. Thanks.

what is a blitz match?

I don't think chess time is on desktop. I like chess time because it is the only chess app i could find that i could play both my android and apple friends. i play it on my tablet and micro-tablet and it has real-time notifications.

you can invite friends or random players and set the game so that there has to be a move every day or 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, or 5 days.

it starts you out at rank 1200 and you go up and/or down from there.

i'm not very good so i'm below 1200 (like 1188)

Blitz is 5 mins to make all moves per side. Your clock runs when it's your turn. If you run out of those 5 minutes, your opponent wins. It's been the only way I play for 20 years. Once you know most of the openings it's easier as the opening game is basically one of the same 30 combinations over and over again... Leaving more time for middle/end game. I always seem to get housed played a game without a time limit because I move so fast and look for quick pawn pushes, Gambits, or scholars mates against chappy players. Looks like a lot of fbgs use it though, maybe I'll give it a whirl.

if you've been playing 20 years, i have no business playing you. It wouldn't even be fun

It's pretty nice. I just started using it yesterday and already love it.

email contacts? have never seen that, or had the app do this in years of owning it.

as for the calender, because you can set reminders for games - and it adds it into your phones calender app. actually a cool feature

nwickman33 for any chess time guys who want to play. Good not great, and really sloppy as I tend to make most of my moves whilst drinking.

Notability- if you have a tablet with a stylus.

Pages- word processor.

Poynt- finds businesses, resturants, gas prices ect..

Omnifocus- designed after "Getting things done" by David Allen. My life is on here.

Xfinity TV remote - a reach, but being able to turn the tv at your home while 100s of miles away is cool. Makes for good pranks.

Nice looking, but is it worth $80?

Woah.

Installed Waze before heading back home after Christmas. Pretty cool that it popped up a notification someone had left about a cop sitting at one spot.

If you plan on using it diligently everyday to never lose a valuable thought then I can't put a price on it. You can find other apps for sure, but this is byfar the best app I've ever used. There is also a steep learning curve. To sit and learn all of the features could take you a hour. Not to mention it's based on a managment system from David Allen that you may/may not need to get an overview of to know what exactly you're doing. The old one was $20. I have a jailbroken ipad so I didn't pay for it.

If you have young kids, Kid Mode is awesome. You configure what apps they can access and permissions and then startup the app. They can then play games or whatever without you worrying about them deleting other stuff, making calls or buying stuff.

Any tips on weather app for android? Really like Intellicast on iOS for the live radar, but haven't found an equal.

Also, I switched from Hangouts to Handcent for SMS texting and it's better, but not sure if there's something else out there. I don't care about video or bells and whistles, just want a clean interface for plain old texting.
I use 1Weather. Has just about everything you need weather wise

Downloaded 1weather over the weekend and deleted it a little bit later in the day. What does it have over the regular Weather Channel app?

Haven't used the Weather Channel app, so I can't answer that. I just like 1Weather because it's got a minimal design and has all the weather info I could need.

I just downloaded it today and the benefits over the Weather Channel one would seem to be:

-way more current radar. TWC free app's radar is so old as to be worthless.

-much faster for me

-way less clutter

I rarely, if ever, check radar on my phone. Where does 1weather get its info from? I wonder which is more accurate. We had heavy rain yesterday and TWC app said it would end at 6PM and the 1weather said 9PM. Rain ended almost exactly at 6PM. Maybe I should download it again and see which is more consistantly accurate.

find my phone

My phone goes missing often
I use this all the time to find my kids iTouches. They put them somewhere in the house, and I have to beep them in order to find them. Love this. Wish I could put it on the remote or keys, wallet...

Has this been designed so that you don't have to look at it? Not having anything tactile has made me shy away from this kind of stuff.

Data ON-OFF - great little switch used to switch cell data on and off.
I imagine that you can still do an emergency call (911)?

Does anyone know of an app that disables emergency dialing? Why? Because I repurpose old smartphones for my kids to play games. There's no account so they only have WiFi and GPS but the kids can still accidentally dial 911.

To do the basics, yes. It has a default menu that does all the basics. Change channels, changing volume, going up, down or enter. But since it controls every piece of hardware in the house, to go deep into it you need to look at the screen.
