Flacco's 2-week nosedive (1 Viewer)

It's ok to worry about the game two weeks ago against KC, where he only posted a 55.6 passer rating and 180 something yards with a pick.

Those who did not watch the Dallas-Ravens game might come away thinking he is on a two-week slide and it might be time to dump him for a hot WW QB (Freeman, Wilson). But I did watch the game and had two plays not gone the way it did, Flacco would have had an above-average day.

play #1:

At the half, Flacco had 170+ yards and a TD to Torrey Smith. Both looked like they were on their way to a good day. The second half started with Dallas getting the ball, who moved down the field fairly quickly and kicked a field goal to put the score at 13-17 Baltimore. Then Jacoby Jones returned the touchdown, and Dallas then embarked on one of the longest drives I have ever seen. When Jacoby Jones returned the kickoff there was 11:24 left in the third. When Dallas finished their next drive with a TD to Bryant, there was only 3:19 left on the clock. Baltimore had the ball for just 53 seconds in the entire third quarter, 3 plays for 1 yard.

play #2:

In the 4th Dallas had the ball for almost 10 minutes. Baltimore only got two drives in the 4th, one a 3 and out. The other was a well orchestrated drive where Flacco almost had a long TD to Boldin, and then Rice ran it in. Baltimore next possession was a victory formation.

Now, we can fault Flacco for the 2 3 and outs in the third and fourth quarters, but when TOP is 40 min to 20 in Dallas's favor, it's hard to blame this one on Flacco. I think if Jones had not returned that touchdown, Flacco would have easily beat 300 yards with possibly another score.

That being said, what is the boards thoughts on Flacco going forward?

I see Flaco being middle of the road the rest of the way.

Startable but nothing special. Now if the defense drops off

as it could with the rash of injuries that could change things.

With the defense hurting, I see good production the rest of the way. Hopefully they lose a couple games so they don't wrap up home field or division too early.

With the defense ailing (and with this news about Reed and his labrum), Baltimore's defense is going to surrender some points on shorter drives, putting more pressure on Flacco.

I think Flacco will be a Top 7 quarterback this week. The holes the Packers exposed in the Texans' defense last Sunday are evident. Joseph has been absolutely BURNED the past few weeks, which is why I'm also very high on Torrey Smith this week.

Baltimore needs to keep Houston's defense on their feet with their no huddle, and must get Pitta more involved.

I just see great numbers in the 2nd half for Joe Cool!

the common theme of those 2 games is that teams were able to run balt over and keep the ball away from flacco.jacoby jones might not run back another one for a td, but I think hou has a good chance to put flacco right back in that 2nd half situation.

of course, both secondaries have taken a hit, so maybe flacco gets a shoot out.

5-5, 6-4 the rest of the way

Lets slow down a little. Today was ugly and they got rolled by a good team. I see them coming back after the bye with a healthy Suggs and Ngata and looking strong the rest of the way out. No way they get swept by Pitt and drop both DEN and NYG. We are talking about a Pitt team thats even more crippled by injuries and has lost to the raiders and the titans

Excerpt from Peter King's MMQB:

Goat of the Week

Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore. You can be a goat and not blow the game at the end. And that's what Flacco was in Houston, with his abysmal play helping pave the wave for a 26-3 Houston halftime lead. Numbers at the half: 7 of 20, 50 yards, two interceptions ... for a passer rating of 4.2. Goat material.

Joe Flacco considers himself 'elite' but evidence says he's not close

By Clifton Brown Sporting News

HOUSTON—The term "elite quarterback" is used too often in the NFL.

The list of elite quarterbacks shouldn't have 20 names on it. The criteria should be tougher, including maybe the top 10 quarterbacks at most.

By those standards, Joe Flacco is not an elite quarterback. He certainly was not an elite quarterback Sunday when the Texans hammered the Ravens, 43-13.

For the third time in seven games, Flacco’s quarterback rating was less than 70. Sunday's rating was a season-low 45.4, with Flacco (21-for-43, 147 yards, one touchdown, two picks) having his worst game of the year. During one first half stretch, Flacco misfired on nine of 10 passes, including a pick-six.

For the season, Flacco doesn't rank in the top 10 in quarterback rating, completion percentage, touchdown passes or yards per completion. That's not elite.

This isn’t meant just to dump on Flacco. Philip Rivers has been nowhere near elite this season either, nor has Michael Vick.

Flacco’s case is interesting, however, because he is a consistent winner. He has never missed the playoffs in four seasons, and even with Sunday’s loss, the Ravens still were 5-2, with a good chance to reach the playoffs again.

Clearly, you can win plenty of games with Flacco as your quarterback. His arm strength is among the NFL's best. Watching the way Flacco shook off some the hits he took Sunday, nobody was questioning Flacco’s toughness either. The Texans brought plenty of pressure, and the Ravens’ offensive line didn't hold up.

The elite player on the Ravens’ offense is Ray Rice, not Flacco. The Ravens act like they forget that at times. When they do, they get in trouble.

Rice only had nine carries Sunday, gaining 42 yards. Once the game got out of hand, the Ravens were forced to abandon the running attack. But the Ravens’ game plan seemed tilted too much toward the passing game from the get-go.

The Ravens threw on eight of their last nine plays of the first quarter, when the game still was tight. On one of those passes, Flacco was sacked for a safety. The play before that, Flacco had just fumbled and the Ravens were fortunate to get the ball back.

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and coach John Harbaugh have some reevaluating to do during their upcoming bye week. The Ravens have won 10 straight when Rice runs for 100 yards or more. That’s still their best formula for success, not more dependence on their no-huddle offense, despite Flacco’s affinity for it.

At 27 years old, Flacco has done plenty to convince the Ravens he should be their starting quarterback for years to come. Quarterbacks with his talent, size and work ethic are not found easily.

However, with the loss of Ray Lewis and Lardarius Webb, Baltimore’s defense is not what it once was, even with the return of Terrell Suggs. The Ravens will need Flacco to play better after the bye, if they are going to break through and get to a Super Bowl.

Calling someone an elite quarterback should be reserved for the cream of the crop. Flacco still must rise to get there.

LMAO

You folks actually thought Flacco had turned the corner. After 4 games, I couldn't believe my eyes, until I looked into his history...

2009 - 1103yds 8tds 3int 62% 7.3 y/att

2012 - 1269 yds 7tds 3int 63% 8.13 y/att

SAME DUDE... hope you sold high

Regarding Flacco in away games from Baltimore Sun beat writer Aaron Wilson; source: http://blog.chron.com/texanschick/2012/10/ravens-qa-with-aaron-wilson-of-the-baltimore-sun-more/

Some of what they’re doing is right out of what Flacco was comfortable running at the University of Delaware, which emphasized the shotgun, a spread formation and getting the football out of Flacco’s hands quickly. Flacco has been less accurate on the road, just over 50 percent, and the Ravens have largely abandoned the no-huddle in noisy road venues.
I don't think anyone's a fan of making Flacco the focal point of this offense. But his best showing was week 1 where he ran the no-huddle and well, looked good. The Ravens only have 4 more home games, none that looks easy and the 2 toughest come in weeks 15 and 16 (Denver and NYG).
