One thing that most people don't understand about the the Rodney King Riots (the last time there was a serious riot in this country after a court case) was that they were unnecessary. The Los Angeles Chief of Police, Darrell Gates, screwed up and didn't get his officers in place in South Central until it was too late. The initial protests could have easily been controlled had he been on the ball.

More importantly, those riots occurred because it was police officers that were acquitted, which meant that African-Americans perceived that the system was against them. In this case a private citizen, George Zimmerman, is on trial. Though many blacks consider his actions to be racially motivated, his guilt or innocence will not be a reflection on the question of police authority, as it was with Rodney King. There were no riots after the Bernard Goetz trial, for example.

That is an interesting take Tim, that the riots were caused because of a lax police presence; it is nice to know that people will act like animals if there isn't a zookeeper to control them.

According to Zimmerman in his interview with Hannity, he thought it was strange behavior, he said under those weather conditions with the rain his neighbors typically run out to get their mail and back due to the rain. He also said he didn't look like he was out in the rain exercising but rather just slowly walking in between the houses, he took it as suspicious behavior. Hannity asked him if there were overhangs, maybe he did that to stay dry. Zimmerman said the only overhangs were on the front door.

dude...i lived in florida...ive worked in the rain ...ive walked in the rain...it wont hurt you...not everyone runs from warm florida rain. He was on the phone talking to his friend,hes a teenager...jesus nobody in the right frame of mind would even notice trey walking along minding his own business ...nobody but a kook who called the cops over trash and kids playing ...hes a whack job and you defend him like hes your idol...very strange.The reason this case bothered me was it could be any one of us ,walking home and getting profiled by some nosy jackwagon wanna be cop with a gun.

The guy was on the neighborhood watch for a reason. Someone had attempted to break into a neighbor's house and that perpetrator had run through Z's backyard. Seems he was just a concerned citizen worried about his family/friends. Did he go overboard in some of his calls, definately. I see your point regarding police officers, but don't you think that Z getting off would also suggest to people that the system is flawed in letting a "murderer" go free? Personally, I believe there will be riots if Z get acquitted. And it won't matter whether or not the evidence clearly points to his innoncence or not either. Most people rioting won't know (or likely care) about the details of the trial. I believe most people will use the acquital as an excuse to garner some free "stuff". The people upset about the injustice will be in the minority.

I agree that he's dangerous. He let what should have been a non-event develop into the killng of a young man. I'm just saying that I can see why he was interested in Martin. In a similar situation, I would probably have tried to keep an eye on the guy too.

i think the King riots were prompted by the fact that the beating was video taped and seen by everyone...it was obvious that those cops were out of control. This case has too many questions and could easily go either way. While its a heated topic its not fueled by racism and police injustice . I think if Zimmy was never arrested and brought to court THEN you would have seen some rioting. He will have his day in court and while the verdict will make some happy and some angry it wont boil over into the streets ...maybe just an isolated incident here and there but nothing bad....IMO

Somewhere many many many pages back if I recall correctly (not sure where in this mess of a thread). It had noted he had traces of marijuana in his system but that's it (and the traces were very minor and more consistant with usage days prior as opposed to the day of).

Yea, he "Zimm'd" the guy in the previous incident in the neighborhood and helped that single lady, his neighbor..

There were neighborhood watch meetings.. I don't know how you can say there wasn't a neighborhood watch.. Unless you're going to try those acrobats attempted earlier in the thread where they weren't affiliated with the national neighborhood watch program so they were not a neighborhood watch group..

So he called the police, while on the phone with the dispatcher he continued to watch and answer the dispatchers questions.. The dispatcher asked Zimmerman to watch by asking him what Trayvon was doing.

This "off duty" nonsense is ridiculous as well.. No one is ever off duty in a neighborhood watch program.. Everyone is expected to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior and potential criminal activity.. Whether its your turn to walk the neighborhood or not, if you see something suspicious, you call the police.. And you protect your neighbors..

And I'm pretty sure you have no evidence that Zimmerman was the one who confronted Trayvon, and not the other way around..

Getting out of his car isn't a crime. Neither is following someone. When the operator told him not to do that, he supposedly stopped.

Good luck getting a murder conviction on things that could have been done to avoid the situation.
