Florida Marlins Closer - (1 Viewer)

Picked up Owens last night and he rewarded me with the save today!

Can he keep the job for a while give Julio's recent struggles? I think they will give Julio another shot here, but if Owens keeps getting the job done, maybe not.

Thoughts?

Owens doesn't have the job yet. It was planned to give Julio the night off. Julio will return as closer but I'm convinced he will blow it and Owens takes over.

Gardner was a one day thing - he was only brought in because Julio loaded the bases with one out.

Owens has yet to strike out a batter this year IIRC - odd but he's been solid so far.

I don't know if it will be this year (maybe late in the year if they are out of contention) but don't be surprised if Lindstrom gets his chance. During a ST interview here locally, Beinfest stated Lindstrom would be the biggest surprise this year (last year I believe he said the same about Sanchez in ST). He looked good last night, though it's early. If he can be consistent with he breaking ball, he will be tough.

I hear Lindstrom's fastball is straight as an arrow even if he is fast.

It was said before the season started the job was tankersley's! i still believe this and he would have been it if he was not on the DL right now. I expect him to take it back soon. he may end up fighting with owens for it now though!

Tankersley was never appointed as the closer prior to this year. There was a lot of speculation he would win the job but he didn't get that chance because he was hurt. If Owens takes the job from Julio and performs well then I highly doubt that Tankersley takes the job over this year. Tank is coming off tendinitis in his shoulder which has been bothering him since the end of February. I'm not comfortable on hanging my hopes on him this year.

Julio is still the closer. He didn't pitch last night because he had pitched the two previous days.
Probably only for one more blow up. Owens is on the verge of taking his job, if he hasn't already.
That's what I was trying to say, Owens hasn't. The Marlins have made that clear. Will Julio keep the job? Not if he keeps blowing saves he won't but they are gonna give a guy who makes 3.6 million more than his share of chances to fail IMO. That said, Julio is the suck.

J.J. Hardy tied the score for Milwaukee with a one-out RBI double in the ninth off Jorge Julio, who has blown both of his save chances this year."I don't know. I'm not in his head," Gonzalez said of his struggling closer's confidence. "The only thing I know is we're going to keep running him out there."

I would think at some point they would want to stop blowing games and move Julio to middle relief to get his issue, whatever that may be, including maybe he is just bad, to be worked out.

Is Owens the 8th inning guy right now? My league counts Holds and he would be a pretty sweet pick up, closer or not.
Yes, he is. But there are better options if your league isn't too deep. Check out the Holds from last season. Zumaya is the #1 guy to have IMO followed by Shields. They are likely rostered already but you never know. Especially in a smaller league.

the fans are all over Julio right now, saying the marlins are 5-1 and julio is 0-2. Freddy may have no choice put to demote him to a setup role until he gets his head worked out.

Are you insinuating the Marlins have fans? I find that hard to believe.

:bag: The Marlins' fanbase is disappointing, but I consider myself a Marlins fan. I am also a Yankees fan (father's team. No baseball in FL until I was 15).

A wise man once asked....If a player on the Marlins records a save does it make a sound?
You know I might have made such a statement the first time I watched the Marlins win the World Series, but after the second time I just wouldn't have done it.BTW, both times the cameras did not cut to Jimmy Fallon kissing Drew Barrymore during the ensuing melee.

I like the way FL does business. They build up a winner, and tear it down just as fast. Thats what they have to do to survive.....they trade off all the major pieces, and rebuild with the high end prospects they got in return.God I wish the Cubs could do this......oh wait, we are doing this....it's just takes us 100 years to rebuild.

Julio OUT as closer.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Jorge Julio has been told he is no longer the Marlins' closer.

Julio, who blew two saves in the past week, was told by manager Fredi Gonzalez on Wednesday that he will now work in the sixth or seventh innings. "It is best for me right now," said Julio. "I need to work on my game, especially my command. I like this team, and I want to help it, not hurt it." Gonzalez says he hasn't decided on a replacement, but Henry Owens, Lee Gardner and Matt Lindstrom are candidates.

we are fans, but this is a football town. Most "fans" follow in the paper or on TV and sometimes go to games. There is no allure to being a season ticket holder here since the stadium holds 45K and only sells ouyt when the yanks or sox come for interleague. If they ever get a 35K retractable bb stadium, I see the attendence numbers going up

I wish I had taken my own advice earlier, as now it's gong to cost me more FA money this week to get him. I thought Julio would get another week, but Owens is your guy.

The guy was lights out in AA as a closer last year, with almost averaging 2 Ks per inning, with a 1.58 ERA and 20 saves.

Closer of the future.

THe only situtation I see where Owens doesn't get 1st crack is if they want to try Tankersly 1st (but not the best decision IMO).

Right. If you're someone who believes in the lefty vs. lefty matchup later in the game, it would make sense to keep TT in that role. They have no other lefties in the bullpen currently.FWIW, TT's split stats from 2006:

vs Lefty - 16.1 IP, 13 H, 5 BB, 15 K, 1.10 WHIP, .236 AVG

vs Right - 24.2 IP, 20 H, 21 BB, 31 K, 1.66 WHIP, .222 AVG

Those walk numbers vs. right handers would make even Jorge Julio cringe.

:kicksrock: :bag: :lmao: This whole thing is hilarious. Might as well give Tank a shot, Owens hasn't been very good.
Could it be lack of work? I mean, he hasn't had an opportunity in 2 weeks. Of course, he's got no track record, and I'm praying to pick up a third closer, so file under wishful thinking!

He wasn't good in his two appearances before that. I think this situation is ever evolving and you'll see Tank get his shot also. I'd be surprised if any of them can hold on for an extended period.

2 scoreless innings is pretty good in my book. Last night, all the damage came with 2 outs. Then he ran into Chipper, Andruw and Francour. Thats a pretty good string of hitters, so I wouldn't write him off just yet. This certainly bears keeping an eye on, but I don't think this is catastrophic to his chances. He's been a closer in the minors and he's had bad outings before; he'll have bad outings again.
