Flying stinks (1 Viewer)

If I never drive I5 from SoCal up to Oregon again the rest of my life it'll be too soon. F that stretch right of highway in the ear hole.

:wall:

we'll be doing a phx to sonoma drive in may (for move out). then back in july for move in. years ago it was fine. those two lanes with truck passing trucks is awful.

Southwest is going to start charging for bags.
They're also going to assigned seating, making the base fare non-cancelable and letting flight credits expire. I have no idea why anyone will choose to fly Southwest anymore. They really aren't that cheap to begin with, charge for wifi, no seat screens or chargers, uncomfortable seats and a fleet of 737 Max 8 deathtraps. They will be out of business in 10 years.
Assigned seating is incredibly welcome, but if they aren't cheaper, then I still wont fly them.

Man I HATE the Denver airport. I feel super bad that you have to deal with it.
The only airport where I had to sleep in the terminal. Damn airport ran our of cars. ALL cars. In the middle of summer - not even ski season. And since they built it 87 miles from civilization there is no point to go to a hotel (or at least when it happened to me, which was a bit back).

So I'm right there with you. The only worse one I have had to fly a good bit is LAX. They should start from scratch on that one (except the international terminal). The walk from International to Terminal 3 feels like going from the Windsor to the Days Inn.

It really is and unless you've actually driven it, there's no way to prepare a driver for how exhausting, taxing, frustrating and nerve-racking that stretch is. And it goes on FOR EVER! God, California is LONG.

I swear the trucks play a game of chicken with passing drivers just to spook them...like facing Randy Johnson and he throws one up near year chin. Go to pass a giant truck hauling tomatoes that are leaking out the back because it's 112 degrees and the mother forker drifts into the left lane ever so slightly to scare a van full of people including the driver who shoulda worn black colored underwear.

The bag thing doesn’t hugely bother me since I do have a credit card, though if we fly as a family it will mean either paying for a second checked bag or possibly cramming carry ons.

But the real change is basically eliminating the Wanna Get Away fare and replacing it with the “Basic” fare which is much more restrictive. They also said they’re moving to an even more dynamic pricing model which I’m reading as generally increasing prices in general.

IMO, they had positioned themselves as a nice space between discount airlines and the other major airlines. Now they’re essentially just another major airline. And they don’t show up in most price search tools so I don’t have as much of an incentive to do a separate fare search on their website for a flight.

Same here…we will see how this changes things…and will be looking at the other airlines cards/points systems to maybe switch (have to look at work travel too and if another airline makes sense for where i will be traveling)

I've also never been stranded anywhere. I once had my first flight on a 3-leg trip to Spain cancelled, but got everything rerouted and made it at almost the same time as originally planned.

Years and years ago, a Friday flight in early May from Maryland to Plymouth England for work was a chore.

Afternoon departure, BWI to Philly to London to Plymouth. Thunderstorms rolling through the region. BWI to Philly leg was cancelled. Uh oh.

Agent rerouted me as such: Dulles to Paris to Jersey (customs) to Plymouth. Not bad, right? Well, had to get from BWI to Dulles. No car, took a cab. That's a heck of a late afternoon Friday rush hour drive during thunderstorms. 95 South, 495 Outer Loop, Dulles Toll Road. Must have taken 2.5 hours. I ended up telling the cabbie how to dive into Silver Spring, take EW Hwy to Connecticut Ave to Bradley Blvd to Wilson Lane, back onto Beltway outer loop at the Am Legion Bridge and into NoVa.

Got to Dulles in time. Flight to Paris etc no problem. Arrived in Plymouth. No bag.

Like an idiot I had flown in shorts. Early May in Plymouth is a heck of a lot colder than I realized. Bags couldn't be found. Were they in Paris? Were they in Jersey? Air France and British Airways kept pointing fingers at each other. No bags for 3 days. Wearing the same shorts and t-shirt. My work was onboard a British submarine, so I quickly began to reek of oil and ship's food. Every evening walking to the pub I froze my butt off. The pub smell was added to the other smells.

On 3rd day my bag showed up at Fawlty Towers, where I was staying. Had time to take a quick shower, put on clean clothes, and grab a cab to the airport since my trip was over.

Southwest is never cheaper for me. And you skin fliints keep hoarding your wheat Pennies. Precheck is 75. For 3 years.

So how much faster does the TSA precheck get your through security? And is it consistently faster?
If you ever flew in the before time (pre 9/11) it's almost as good as that. I've only ever seen it as slow as the plebes or slower in Denver and once in Toronto. Best $75 I have ever invested.

Most of the time the line is 65-75% faster. Sometimes there is no one in line. And not taking everthing off and leaving electronics in the bag is glorious
I'd wait longer if it meant I didn't have to pack my bag thinking about how to easily get toiletries and electronics out for the scanner.

Even better that I get that benefit, and don't have to take shoes off, and the line moves faster (because nobody has to take crap out of their bag or take their shoes off)

I flew back to the midwest once while my dad was sick, and my KTI was not entered, so I didn't come up precheck (I'm not pointing fingers at my wife, who swears she entered it, but it wasn't entered. So judge for yourselves that she's guilty). I went through GenPop for the first time in, I don't know, 3-4 years? Convinced me I'll never be without some version of precheck again. That's just so much less pleasant an experience.

Ok…. Need cliff notes on tsa vs global

Pros and cons and how does it work if you are traveling with peoplexwho do not have them
Its not a "vs" it's an "and"

Global Entry, which includes giving you TSA Pre check, is an expedited security when you re-enter the country from abroad. And holy **** is it faster. Like sub five minutes every trip I've ever had to get through customs.

If traveling with people who don't have them, you just wait on the other side of security or customs, respectively, in comfort, less aggravated, with your dignity, just being a happier person and knowing you are better than they are.

:lmao:

We’ve taken 2 trips with my daughter’s boyfriend. He doesn’t have it. My daughter, bless her little heart, tells him “see you on the other side” I’ve raised a good one. She adds this gem once he’s through, “I keep telling you to get it”

We went on a cruise over my daughter's 18th bday. On the flight out, she got to leech off our precheck. On the return flight, she needed her own and was, thus, without it.

Wife: " I'm going through the normal line with her."
Me: "Uh, OK, well... that's dumb. I'll see you at the gate."

Where did that thread go? No one believed me about all the current issues. And here we are.

Time for 🚆

The actual hotel used for filming? If so, that's awesome.
Sorry, no. But it was one of those rowhouses that functions as a 12-room hotel. Great little cozy bar off the entry. Kept kegs of local beer in a cage on the garage roof (cage due to thieves), hauled a new one in through the window.

Can't remember the name of the place, just that the owner's name was Nick and the local beer was Blackawton. I think the brewery was closed (or sold) in a circa 2000 divorce. Nick worked the bar when he wasn't doing everything else.

I hate flying for so many reasons, but near the top of the list is sitting there after you land waiting for all the people in front of you to get off their asses, grab their bags and get the hell off the plane. MOVE!!!!!

It shouldn't take half as long as it does.

Going to NYC for 5 days, anyone want to take a stab at what to pack in a carry on suitcase?

-1 pair of darker blue jeans, 1 pair of pants-solid brown,
1 pair of Cargo type pants-"Hawk" is the brand on these, I'll wear them on the plane because they're drawstring, no belt

-1 lighter jacket that is very close to this one
-the thinking here is in case it rains but also something that can be folded up easily and tucked into a backpack

-1 slightly thicker jacket although most days it's gonna be between 45-50 during the day, somewhere in there.
-Hoodie sweatshirt I wear on the tennis courts when its actually cold in the morning down here
-1 pair of Asics-Kayano and perhaps 1 pair of Ecco shoes that look a little dressier

The rest of the suitcase will be mostly undershirts, underwear and thick socks. 1 or 2 long sleeve button ups but I would not describe them as dress shirts,
What am I missing?

Going out Fri Night to Brooklyn to see a couple DJs we know and then going out Sat Night to this spot https://h0l0.nyc/ and our hope is all 3 of them are spinning vinyl
We are huge Underground House fans going back to some late 80s and early 90s tracks, we have a lot of dane tracks from the 90s at our house
We'd like to take in a comedy club if we can, maybe Thursday Night after we land, also going to be there for St Patty's on Monday (y)

I love flying. It's remarkable. One of the greatest things humans have ever accomplished.

Why is the experience bad sometimes? Because of the people who fly once or twice a year, or once every five years, and have no clue what they're doing.

Airports should legit have different entrances, security checks, etc for some minimum experience that'll run smoother and then the masses can stay like it is today.
That's why I love TSA PreCheck - not only are the lines a little shorter (at DEN, that is less true than any other airport I fly through) and I don't have to remove half the **** the plebes do, but it eliminates 95% of the people that only travel once every three years to go to Disney with their ****ty family (no offense to the ****ty Disney families here), or whatever. Then I go to my nice airport lounge away from those same people, and only really interact with them at the gate. Makes the whole process so much better.
Man I HATE the Denver airport. I feel super bad that you have to deal with it.

It has so far and away the worst ingress/egress of any major American airport it is mind blowing.

It's super far away from anywhere I am flying into it to get to anyway (like the actual city of Denver). The traffic getting to it seems to be absolutely terrible no matter what time of day (this is shared with LAX, my second least favorite airport).

But what truly sets it apart is the total cluster **** mosh pit lunatic setup of security they have. I mean it is so bad. If you can even get to the TSA Pre line somehow with anything you're carrying along with all your limbs intact, they somehow managed to make it slower than any other pre check I've been through (which there are many).

You have my deepest sympathies, seriously.

I usually take the Skybridge to that security check and fly right thru and then drop down to the tram in A for the haul out to Southwest.

The plus side of Denver is that you don't have helicopters flying under your landing plane or an icy river surrounding the runway on all sides. Also the runway is 3 miles long compared to under a mile at Midway. Even a Southwest pilot with colored hair is going to be able to stick a landing in Denver.

At least you could find a place to sleep in Denver. At Midway there isn't a flat surface wider than 24 inches in the whole airport to keep the homeless out.

Denver is not a terrible place to connect actually because you avoid the worst things about entering and exiting.

I've had to sleep in far worse airports (the reason for being worse differs):
Corpus Christi
Wichita Falls
Wichita
Istanbul
Santorini
Panama City

I'm sure there's more but those just off the top of my head.

Flying out of Honolulu is fine. Denver and Salt Lake, too. For me, LA and Phoenix are the worst.

And TSA is an inconsistent clown show nearly everywhere.

But the overall experience doesn’t really bother me at all. I say this as a non pre-checked/un-clear guy, who books regular seats

All that said. It’s amazing how superior international carriers are. We like ANA and JAL to Japan, as they have a little more room in the commoners’ area (or maybe it’s just Japanese people are smaller, and more polite), and serve legitimately good food. Plus they seem to hire flight attendants based on looks 😍

Also, it’s shocking how much faster security and boarding proceed.
I actually like Phoenix. Low key has some of the best food as far as airports go.

TSAs inconsistency is pretty crazy. It's gotta be a hiring/training thing somehow, because it even varies terminal to terminal. Like at DFW, I know that it will almost always be fastest, and definitely be the least aggravating, to go to the D30-ish entrance and use TSA. Then I can walk or Skylink to whatever terminal my gate actually is (and usually get food in D on the way, which has the best food in DFWs airport).

B? Even if the line is like 3 people I know it's gonna be aggravating. E? I may as well be at the Durango CO airport it's such a mom and pop operation.

The wide variance is crazy. I would LOOOOOOVE to be put in charge of that agency. Think I could really make it more efficient for everyone, and perform better too.
Good to know Phoenix has some redeeming qualities. Traveling between terminals is what aggravates me though, as they make it nearly impossible to walk.

TSA kills me with variability in policy, as it's never completely clear whether food, hats, jackets, and some electronics need to be removed and/or scanned separately. It's easiest to assume the worst, but then you'll occasionally get a condescending agent who scolds you for doing something unnecessary.

We all know it's 99% dog-and-pony show, and a determined criminal could probably foil all the safety theater anyway.

As an aside, did you know live fish can be transported on planes?
Don't you have to walk? They have those moving walkways between all of them. I always remember it being one of the simpler airports to go from A to B etc. Wondering if you're thinking of a different airport. Like I always find ATL a pain in the butt to change terminals.
It’s been a while, but they had a shuttle bus between some of the terminals. I chose to walk instead, which required me hiking through some sidewalk-less area near a government building, an embassy IIRC?

I encountered wind bursts that beg to differ. They redirected us to Colorado Springs and caused a missed connection to Chicago, where my bag was waiting for me.

I was in shorts and a t- shirt from AZ. It was not shorts weather in Denver. Thankfully I had carried on my overcoat, so i could walk through DIA looking like a flasher.

I like Sky Harbor in Phoenix, especially now that the train connects with the rental car center. The airport I hate the most is Charlotte. That place is currently a dump and always a long walk with all of the speedwalks tore out.

Panama City (Panama) airport is really really bad in the old terminal. Slightly better in the new one, but still not great.

I do love Burbank Airport. So easy to get into the terminal and through security and then the gates are right there. No lounge though as I recall.

Panama City (Panama) airport is really really bad in the old terminal. Slightly better in the new one, but still not great.
I remember about 45 years ago my dad and a number of other adults were lines up and frisked by guys with machine guns in that airport. It was just a connection, too.

And you can renew On Line (no interview).
I waited for about 8 months trying to get a Global Entry interview at the airport. Eventually paid for a service that gave me a heads up when an appointment opened up.
I hate flying for so many reasons, but near the top of the list is sitting there after you land waiting for all the people in front of you to get off their asses, grab their bags and get the hell off the plane. MOVE!!!!!

It shouldn't take half as long as it does.
Here's my current complaint, my home airport is Charlotte (CLT) which is a fairly busy spot. Their move now is you land on time or early, you taxi to near your gate and then park for 5-20 minutes waiting on a gate to open up. You drive past 2 concourses that are empty but when you get yours, it looks like Time Square on New Years. Planes parked everywhere. How's about you just park us at one of the empty gates instead of herding everyone in the airport through one concourse?

slept there in March 1992 for 3 days. Some reason AA felt it was better to put us on a bus in Aspen (since flights were cancelled and we had no night at hotel left) and get us to Denver.........only problem is we got there along w/ 1,000's of others, and they closed the airport. 3 days sleeping in the terminal. GF broke up w/ me soon after this fiasco.

Slept there in 2003 or 2004, but I was outside of security so not in the terminals. Flight was LAX to Denver to Home, the first leg got delayed 4 hours and I missed my connection. They wouldn't put me in a hotel. Little League World Series was in town, so every hotel <$300/night was booked. I was in college at the time and didn't have the money to shell out for a room so figured I'd sleep in the airport. Left security to go get my bag from baggage claim after a desk agent told me it was there, so I could change clothes and brush teeth. It wasn't there, and they wouldn't let me back through security because my rebooked boarding pass was for the next day so too early.

Tried to get food at a burger place, sign said Cash Only, Card Reader Down. Went to ATM and the stripe on my debit card wouldn't read. College kid, got no credit card, only one debit card. Went back to food court and begged Taco Bell cashier to manually enter card # so I could pay. She didn't know how, manager was called over, he couldn't figure it out either, I left hungry. Cook in the back snuck me a bag of tacos after closing because he felt bad for me. Fun night...
