Focusing on the positive -- GOOD things about the coronavirus situation (1 Viewer)

If you live anywhere near SE Michigan, today is absolutely perfection. Nice to have plenty of time to soak up this weather.
Except this area is getting hit hard and it's a bit scary. Wish we were more centrally located. OR up north a little more.

Stay safe!

I love being home and getting so much time with the kids.  Even better they're sleeping until like 8am, been many years since I've slept that late in the morning.
I used to wake up to my alarm at 4:45am on weekdays. That’s my routine.

Now I just wake up whenever. We all do. That’s crazy.

My 5 and a half year old son is in Kindergarten.  He's always been fairly advanced cognitively (e.g. knew ABCs before 1, could fully read by 3 and a half, etc).  This "break" from school is allowing me to work very closely with him to tap into his potential.  In 1 week of home school, he's mastered double digit addition and subtraction.  He's also gotten pretty good at chess.  I'm planning to start teaching him multiplication and division this week because I know he's ready for it.   We also toss the football around every day and he's getting pretty good at throwing and catching.  I feel like this is such a great opportunity for parents with young children.

On the other hand, my 4 year old daughter is completely hopeless.  I've given up on her.  If she does well in life, it will be because of her looks.

Given the state of this country, you do realize your daughter is twice as likely to end up rich and famous as your son right?

- more family time

- no one is on the roads, streets, stores

- we are not spending much (gas, food, etc)

- cooking more at home (pros and cons to this)

As I know you are lawyer and have young kids too, how are you managing that?

I've only got one kid, but I'm waking up a lot earlier than normal, so I can get some work in while the house is quiet.  It seems like my wife and I have to tag-team between his crisis of the moment every 15 minutes, and I need to make a lot of time during the day help keep him entertained (it is not uncommon for me to be playing hide and seek by ducking behind a kitchen counter while reviewing a document on my laptop).  So, I've been finding that the only way that I can get all the work during the day that I need to is if I've got 3 hours billed by the time 9am rolls around; I'm not sure how sustainable that is for me, but it is the best way that I've found so far.

I need to find a better way here.

Have learned my job can be done effectively from home. I've always worked at home some during nights and weekend on my laptop, but nothing like this. Brought everything home from the office for a better home office setup and ordered another set for my work office. So will probably work from home more once this is over, and more effectively. In fact, I predict that one effect of this crisis on our society will be to transition more work to telework for the long term. This may transform our work culture.

Have been going to stores once every 3-4 days. Have noticed that people are generally much nicer and more patient than before we entered this crisis. That is a good thing for now, and, who know, maybe there will be some positive lingering effect once this is over.

Spending more time cooking nowadays. I enjoy it, just don't normally have enough time to do it more than maybe once per week. (My wife and I live with her parents, so they cook most nights other than 1-2 takeout nights every week.)

For me, more time at home with my wife is a plus. (Not necessarily as great a thing to be at home with her parents 24/7...)

I feel like isolation makes it so much easier to get motivated to exercise.  Going outside these days feels like a privilege so I'm loving any chance I can get to go for a nice long run.  On days where I can't run outside, I'm doing a new HIIT/Tabata workout in my basement.  I definitely wasn't this motivated pre Covid

Lol... I feel the complete opposite. Isolation, wfh has made me so unmotivated to do anything.   Yes I go outside to get some fresh air but that's about it

With two busy kids and our schedules...its been nice having family dinners again.  We usually only get that maybe once a week.

If you’re leasing a car you’re probably putting a fraction of the miles on it that you normally would.

Hell, pretty much everything about cars...tires, wear and tear, oil changes, car washes etc.

The last time I put gas in a vehicle was Ash Wednesday.
Yeah...its been a while.   Weekly or so trip to the store for a curbside grocery pickup.  We have timed this with a weekly trip out to do a curbside pickup at a local restaurant.

Mostly in one car...then my son has been learning to drive just in the area...so that car is getting a few miles at a time 2-3 times a week.

Grass is just now starting to come in so not even having to mow once a week yet...so no need for that.

I think I may be going through more propane for my grill and charcoal for the other grill than I am gas in our cars.

I'm spending quality time with my family when I get home from work, and while we can drive each other nuts, it's better in the long run.

I'm also taking a type of inventory of how I spend my time sports-wise, and I think I'll be making some changes.

I love to fish and we live close to one of the most famous trout streams in PA. Ironically, I very rarely fish for trout. The whole spectacle of "Opening Day" turns me off. People who only fish once a year, standing elbow-to-elbow, waiting for the clock to strike 8:00am. And when it does, it's nothing but tangled lines and people shouting and splashing around. Its a mess. I avoid it due to the crowds even during normal times.

Anyway, wife and I were walking by this stream about a week ago when I saw some palomino that were recently stocked. They were laying in a hole feeding on a current line. There were 2 smaller ones and one big fat one. It's not uncommon to see them during the weeks leading up to opening day since they are bright colored and stick out like a sore thumb. I began tracking them. Every day we'd walk this stretch of the creek and I would search until I found them all. They'd move around a bit, but generally always found them in the same section. Opening day was scheduled for this coming Saturday at 8:00am, so I figured they'd be gone soon enough.

While having some coffee this morning, I thought I heard the news-lady say something about PA officially opening trout season starting immediately in order to prevent crowds. I had my wife rewind it back to make sure I heard it correctly. Yes, trout season was open immediately. My first thought was "Holy ####, I can get to those palominos before anyone else has a chance!". I quickly grabbed my waders and my gear and jumped in the truck, unsure of what I would find. Typically, the parking lot at the creek would be packed, the firehouse would be serving breakfast to a crowd of people, and there would literally be hundreds of dads and kids lining the banks. Instead, I was at the creek by 8:30am and there wasn't another sole in sight. This was literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! A big fat palomino has long been on my bucket list, but one that I figured I'd never get because I wasn't willing to fight the crowds.

I got to my spot absolutely giddy with excitement. Could barely tie my line because my hands were trembling so bad. Found one of the smaller palominos and immediately started casting to her. First cast was perfect. She saw it coming from way upstream and moved into position. I drew the line tight and the spinner danced in front of her. She followed for several feet and my heart raced, but then she retreated to her spot. I continued casting to her, catching a rainbow in the process, until she finally followed and struck! I set the hook and turned her against the current for a brief second before she came unbuttoned and my spinner came shooting back at me. This was disastrous. It was unlikely that she would strike again.

Feeling dejected, I saw a golden flash from the corner of my eye. The bigger, fatter palomino had moved directly in front of me! I slowly moved and re-positioned myself upstream so that I could cast down to her (something I never would have been able to do on a crowded day). I got into position and started making my casts. On the 3rd one, she chased down my lure and I was HOOKED UP! I watched it all unfold and have the whole thing on video! One of my greatest fishing accomplishments under the most unusual set of circumstances!

My Big Fat Palomino!

Thought of that the other day. I was set to go over on miles but not anymore.

This whole experience has shown me how flipping wasteful we have been prior to this. We regularly throw food out because we either forgot about it or didn't feel like eating it. Not anymore. Every last leftover gets consumed and nothing edible goes in the garbage. This is a whole new way of life and much more responsible. Ironically we are all losing weight and eating much healthier as well. We don't order take out if the 3 day old leftovers look unappealing - we eat it. As an example, we have 3 apples that are about two weeks old that no one ate. I typically would have tossed them. But no, we are going to chop them up tomorrow and use some frozen cranberries that have been in the freezer since Christmas and make apple-cranberry muffins to have breakfasts for a week. This is the biggest thing I am taking away from this and starting to understand my Depression era grandparents' mindsets a lot more.

Just heard on the local news, 700,000,000 less robocalls in March. SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION LESS. Definitely a positive  and one I noticed personally even before I saw the broadcast.

I had to call a tow truck as my “toy” car was stuck in my garage and I couldn’t get it started.  Guy came by and said things are really slow for him, since basically nobody is on the road. The garage was glad to have the business. It isn’t really “essential,” I have other cars, but I stayed far away from the guy, he had gloves and a mask, and I threw a tip at him as he was walking out.  Car also is overdue for an inspection, so a good chance to have the mechanic do that too.

Anyway, this has allowed me to get a bunch of random things like that done. I similar had a mobile wheel service come by and swap my summer wheels in for my winter wheels on my main car. Again, stayed away from the guy other than when I left an envelope on the curb with his cash payment.

Getting stuff done.  At the end of this I’d like to be caught up on basically everything around the house and every chore.  Come out of this better than we went into it. Then just get the heck outside and enjoy some sunshine and activities, restaurants, whatever.

Definitely more worried about that tank than the one on the cars. I fill mine at a local U-Haul. Hope they are still open.
Natural gas baby

That said, my dad was out of propane, and a local delivery service came and dropped off a new tank for him. You should call around.

Went out to look at the moon last night and it was like I was standing 3 feet away from it. Never seen the sky that crisp and clear. We really are ruining the planet. At least we are giving it a break for a month.

Grilled, sliced apples FTW... especially great with pork chops!

For the second week in a row I enjoyed an epic trash day yesterday, getting rid of six contractor bags worth of clutter, a rusted-out wheelbarrow and an old snow blower, in addition to our regular load of refuse. It all came from a junk-collection area under my deck, will continue to tackle other areas of the house making this a weekly thing. It's my favorite activity, borderline arousing.

And btw, the amount of regular trash six people produce when home 24/7 is astounding, nearly double what our typical weekly volume is in normal times when we'd leave tracks elsewhere. The neighborhood trash guys are working twice as hard as usual these days - add them to the list of unsung heroes.

We did this last night. The kids were bored so I asked them: "You want to go watch the moon move?"

That peaked their interest, so we grabbed our lawn chairs and sat on the sidewalk. I had the smaller one sit in front of me, and my older son sat behind me in his chair. We picked a reference point, which happened to be this pine tree about 50 feet in front of us.

So imagine all three of us in the same sight line.

When we started, the moon was in open sky to the left of the tree. Every two minutes (we timed it), we could see the moon get closer and closer to the outer branch. Then two minutes later, partially covered. Then two minutes later, half covered.....and so on.

It was cool.

We started out with the laid back life that Otis describes in the op. I only have 8 kids home now. The amount that we gave slowed down has really surprised me. So far the best “good” thing we’ve done is foster/adopt a shelter dog. He’s old, doesn’t have many teeth, and has become very possessive of me. He’s some kind of chihuahua mix.

I've spent so much time doing this.  An enormous trash haul each week, maybe 20 huge black track bags with of stuff, some old furniture, etc.  Feels incredible.  My basement is spotless, as is most of the rest of the house.  Still a couple of minor things to get to (really, just a couple of big pieces of furniture), and then I want to do a pass through the garage.  But by the end of this thing, I will be completely clutter free.

If I might ask, and this question isn't just for Otis, but people throwing out bag after bag of junk and clutter, why did you have it to begin with? I mean, if you are going right from home to trash pick-up, it obviously wasn't worth keeping the first place. So why did you keep it? I hate clutter. I constantly donate stuff when I buy something to replace it. I can't imagine hanging on to a dozen bags worth or more.

Stuff just accumulates. Old baby stuff like high chairs and strollers, our kids are all out of them. Old gifts we got but never opened. Old exercise equipment we never use (insert Otis lolz joke). Even some stuff we moved into the basement here when we moved from our prior house 5 years ago but just haven’t used. Stuff just accumulated. And damn it felt good to get rid of it.

Ps...by the way, I should note we HATE clutter in our living spaces. Our living room and den are like museums. Very simple, lots of white and light gray paint everywhere, not a lot of clutter.  All the stuff I’m referring to is stuff that was in our big basement storage area, our third floor, etc. The house is almost 5k square feet, and it’s amazing how much crap can accumulate in the places you don’t spend time on a daily basis.

pps... on the issue of clutter in the living spaces, I am stunned at how some people live. I don’t know how they do it. My brain would be scrambled.

My eldest daughter turned 9 today. Hard for kids not to be able to have a party or really celebrate their birthday. People in my town have been doing a cool thing for the kids on their birthdays where friends and family do a car parade past their house, honking horns and with balloons and signs. My daughter thought just her grandma was going to drive by and say hello. She was so overwhelmed, almost in tears at all the people who came out.  Even her teacher showed up!  Really sweet.

People are good. I know that people are awful, and slow, and stupid, so very stupid. But people are good.
