Formation Fantasy Football (FFF) (1 Viewer)

Bump for the 2005 year. Any interest? Rookie players would be included in the draft that would hopefully begin around mid June or so.

PK - I'd love to take a shot at this, do you have room? I still have the hard copy of the original post in my FFB files. Did the league get off the ground last year? I'd be interested to see what happened.IMHO the only way to roll something like this out would be to get in on the ground floor. No way i could ever see an established league make a light year jump in rules.

I remember reading this inital post last year, and being intrigued. Re-reading the first couple pages today, I got to thinking that it might be best to switch the "bonus" based of formations to simple % bonuses. Someone suggested this for the defensive side of the ball. Overtime, and with a few years of experimenting, you'll get this # (a % increase to a certain position) anyway. The trick is trying to figure out what % increase bonus keeps the different formations all viable. If you're serious about setting up the "evolution" of FF leagues, I strongly urge you to run some simulations and test cases. Perhaps even an entire season. You don't need 12 people to run the 12 teams. Just do the draft yourself. Pick a draft strategy for each team, and run the mock yourself. Then apply your bonuses and formations throughout a season.I may try some of this if work ever slows down. Can either write a program to parse game data or just use Excel to do some of it. I'm still more sold on doing a straight % increase (and a proportional % decrease in other positions) based on formation. In short, I'm definitely wanting to help/contribute to the idea. I think it has merit, but I also believe it's farther away from coming to fruition than you might think :)

Last year I participated in a mock draft of sorts with PK on this........unfortunately we started it fairly close to the season and ran out of time and we had an owner or two that were holding the draft up.........only change i would recommend is that last year we did either a 10 or 12 team draft, and while it will work, i think to take advantage of having to really think about your strategy and filling particular positions a 16 team league would be best, but that would obviously be up to the person organizing it (PK?)

Back before we all had wives and kids and real jobs we had a healthy 12 team that survived for a about 6 years. Why dont you just play this instead. link

Who are you? My alter ego or what? Last year I did a 10 team mock after the initial draft fell through. I am in the process of switching over the scores with a basic premise for scoring. No bonuses based on formations but I looked through the game logs and gathered the data I think I need to translate the points I need to. It would be a retroactive league obviously now, but would put points into a league format.

IMHO anyone who does not like the idea of something like this is not able to think for themselves or formulate their own opinions about players.
Thats a load of crap. I am able to think for myself. I am also able to form opinions about things. However, I think scoring systems should be fairly simple. I like systems which can allow someone who's good at doing math in their head to see a players stat line at the bottom of the screen and figure out how many points they've scored.

I can appreciate your interest in a different type of system but that hardly makes me as mentally weak as you imply. And thats my honest opinion.

I had the players points from 2003 and 2004 in a thread but it got purged... :hot: and I cannot find them doing a quick search on my puter. I did not convert 2005 however.

It is not that hard to convert though. Open up a sample league on MFL and fit the point requirements in. Meaning there are only 2 main things that need to be done. The first is to put in the QB stats at .05 pts/1 yard and wait for the stats to load into the league. Second, is to put .067 for the yards and wait for those stats to load up. The other instance is for TE's and the difference there is to plug in either 1 pt, 1.5 pts, or 2 pts into the stat maker and wait a little bit for them to load up. If looking at point totals only and not to worried about players next to them or anything for the TE's the only stat that needs looking at is receptions. Multiple those be 1, 1.5, and 2 to figure out total points. It does take some time but those are the only ones unless you care to plug in different stats for defense as well.

I am still looking for the old stats and all my old cds I copied data on I threw out too after crushing them. Damnit, I really thought I had that data.

I, ironically did a draft earlier this week for the coming year to follow along, and I used the VBD app and drafted each team 5 of the top 60 players. There were some odds and ends as I did not give one team 2 QB's with their first 2 picks or things like that. I will try to format the first 5 rounds so you guys can look it over. The data I used in the VBD app were:- .055 yards for the QB as I was looking for some median there- 1.5 points for the TE receptions to also have a median- I also used 3 WR's for the starting requirements and 1 RB The 12 teams shaped up as the following for the first 5 rounds: The order they show up is the order they were drafted... 1st round on top through the 5th round.

Looking at the teams I think is a pretty good mix of what a league like this could have. At first look I like teams 8 and 11. Two different ways to go about winning and not the same old RB, RB, RB kind of draft. Thoughts?

Scoring from the past... 2003 and 2004. The (x) signifies the relative postion the player finished among all players.

I will have to get to 2005 at some other time.

Timely bump.

I have completed drafts the last couple of years to see how a 12-team league would look like and I have always been impressed with the fact that each team is not a vanilla mirror of the next team. I hope to follow through this year and do more after the draft this time around as well. I will post the draft later today when I have some time.

Over the last couple of years of reflection, I have lessened the amount of categories for scoring to simplify things. However, looking at MFLs league management software they have incorporated many aspects I proposed in the original article seen in post #1. Such as differing the amount of point per reception based on the position a player is at... i.e. RB vs. WR and such. I also have noticed the option(s) to incorporate different formations or number of starters at a given position. Not sure about the original bonuses I suggested, but most everything else is there.

I am also wondering if any leagues have followed something like I suggested many moons ago or if they have a type of hybrid league going. I would like to see some leagues if you have them. I am still a firm believer that this is the best way to go when playing fantasy football too.

The leagues that I have been in that went to the formation starting lineup have been more fun the past couple of years. Owners have dropped out of "standard formation" league because they are mundane... their words, not mine. Still wondering if any leagues have adopted the formation style format.

Our draft will be coming up before the season as well.
