When I was renovating my kids bathroom I had the kids draw and paint stuff on the inside of the drywall that was exposed from the rooms surrounding that bathroom. I then put some newspapers in there and also wrote our names and dates of the renovations for the next guy to find.

I've found stuff like that before.. current dated coins are good too.

In 2001 wife and I bought a home built in 1915 and moved to this property from another plot across town.  Basically a shell, and we spent years remodeling.  We found out that it has been rented and used as a foster care/halfway house for kids recovering (or trying to) from drug addiction.  In addition to syringes, spoons, and rubber tubing found tucked away in various spots, in our son's bedroom closet we found names/dates/notes from some of the kids who had passed through.  That wall is the only one in the home that has not been painted in the 21 years we've lived here.
