They aren't in the same orientation. Lining up the ends amounts to comparing the longer top edge of the lower piece with the shorter bottom edge of the upper piece. You're not comparing upper to upper and lower to lower, which if you did they are identical.

If you set them down one above the other in the same orientation, the corners would be straight above each other, and you'd see easily they are the same size. However, the upper piece is getting slid along the curve to the left. Its orientation is changed, it is rotated some amount compared to the bottom. That the ends make a perfect straightly line with each other is just tricking us into thinking it's a valid comparison when it isn't.

Here's a video where the guy was doing it as a magic trick. Watch a few seconds of this where he talks about comparing the top edge versus a bottom edge is why it fools us:

Then go back a bit and watch where you can see they are the same size. And he flips the top upside down so the edges match up more clearly:
