Mind blown

So the song writers were actually writing about a country road in Maryland. However, Maryland's three syllables didn't fit in the song well, and so they ended up going with West Virginia as it sounded better. The writers had never even been to West Virginia at that point in time and just assumed it would match what they were putting in the song. John Denver later heard it and liked it and contributed to finishing the music and lyrics.

As a lifelong Marylander I’m pissed we didn’t get that song.

I'm pretty sure Toto's "Africa" was originally "Maryland," but that got changed, too. Sorry.
