From Fat to Fit 2025 - I Really Mean It This Time! (1 Viewer)

So frustrated. I've plateaued at around 243 lbs. I went from 256 to 240 in about 2 months, which is great.... but I've been stuck at 240-243 for a couple weeks now. I walk and work out a lot and have been eating MUCH better. What to do... what to do... ? :(
Have you decreased your calorie intake since the plateau? At some point your body will no longer continue to lose weight unless you continue to make it calorie deficient. You're probably at a net zero at 240 pounds.
I mean, probably? I was eating a ton of fast food and oven pizzas before this. That said, I've been eating more often (like 3 actual meals a day rather than just one giant fat-and-calorie-rich meal), so maybe my calorie intake is remaining about the same. Ugh.
If you aren't losing and you feel like you're trying then you definitely need to track. I'll link a couple really simple Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculators. This will tell you what you're burning at rest for your age/weight/height. My BMR for my age/height/weight is between 2,033.6 and 2,223 calories according to these.

BMR BMR

Then once you have that BMR number you'll need to determine your activity level and how many calories you're burning per day/week through exercise. Add the daily BMR and your burned calories together. Then subtract your consumed calories. To lose one pound per week you need to be at or around a 3,500 (500 per day) calorie deficit.

And that's what I was getting at earlier. As you lose weight your BMR is going to go down.

Ok, this week is a big push for me. Lots of time and opportunity to exercise. Not traveling at all, so I have solid control over food availability and intake. Need to get back into rhythm and stick to my plan — for me the biggest thing is listening to my body, which tells me when I’m full and don’t need more food. But one of my anxiety responses is to eat food — not a good mechanism to cope. Instead, I’m going to take a walk, do 25 push ups, or drink a glass of water each time I feel anxious.

Weighed in this morning down 4.5 lbs from starting point. I expect to see a minor bounce back tomorrow — played basketball last night, ended the day at net 650 calories (which is below what I’m aiming for by too much) and am likely still a bit dehydrated from sweating a ton.

Focused more on the process. Ate healthier yesterday (still ate a small scoop of ice cream last night but otherwise avoided processed foods), drank a lot of water during the day, walked 6-7 miles, did 75 push ups in between work meetings.

Gotta stay focused on doing simple things consistently. Not every day will involve as much exercise as yesterday.

Weighed in today up 0.5 lbs from yesterday, as expected. Ate a more normal amount, was better hydrated, etc. I share this only because daily fluctuations are pretty normal depending on what you eat, how hydrated you are, time of day you weigh in (I always weigh in first thing each morning)…..

Edit to add: playing the long game here and not worried about daily decimal point changes

Not sure I’ll hit the 180’s before I’m on vacation but 190.2 was close enough I think - will see where I’m at tomorrow morning before I go but I’m not super motivated to skip drinking on a Friday night before the beach

Somehow I did it - first day of vacation and was 189.8 this morning.

Now to try the impossible and lose weight on vacation. How? I plan to continue with IF, zero beverage calories outside alcohol, no or limited sweets and pescatarian diet for the most part with lots of seasonal fruits.

Just got back a few hours ago and unofficially official or officially unofficial, I did it. Unofficial because I always weigh in the morning and I’ve fasted all day today and then ran 3 miles in the heat. I may be 8 pounds dehydrated for all I know.

But was just 187.8 :pickle:

Official weigh-in will be tomorrow morning - if I’m down even a tenth of a pound I will consider that wildly successful.

Then tomorrow I have my wife’s 50th birthday party and leave for Disney Sunday - I’m saying it now - I won’t be under 190 by the time I get home Thursday. :)

Traipsing around Disney and avoiding their exorbitant prices would burn me'/help me avoid a lot of calories.

Good luck, gb

Down to 208.3. 5 mile run this morning. Headed into the garage for a lift now. Staying super motivated and determined so far.

Also, get yourselves a good multi-vitamin if you haven’t already.
Keep it up!!

Absolutely Re: vitamins. Am continuing to focus on eating healthier food….
It’s something we all neglect as an afterthought, but a good multivitamin is so important.

I'm in. The last few years have not been kind. Started on BP, Pulse, and Cholesterol meds. They seem to doing their jobs. Have not been serious at all about lifestyle changes (decent food nor exercise). My A1C after hanging out at 6.2-6.3 the last couple of years has jumped to 6.7. I had tried Metformin a couple of times (literally only a couple days each time) before and gave up because of GI issues. Doc suggested weekly Ozempic shot. A little leery about newer meds like that and told him I'll give the Metformin a more sustained chance and from there.
Joined a gym but havent gone yet. Need to get on that routine. Also need to figure out food. Any suggestions on what has worked for you, especially food wise (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) appreciated. Work from home so that both helps and hinders with food. 6'2" and about 315ish. First goal is to get AIC pushed back down a bit. Second is to get back under 3 bills. Then back to the 250ish number I seemed to stay at for years which I thought was overweight. Then eventually move even lower. I'm 49 so I am feeling a sense of urgency. Gotta get serious with my health finally.

It was a struggle - I was trending in a bad direction and had to cut out all alcohol the last 4 days of the trip. Down one pound after 13 days at the beach is a big win for me. In the past I would easily come back up 5-10 pounds.
Massive win. I did not do what you did while I was away on my mission trip.

Welcome aboard! Read through the thread, there are a few others in a similar boat. For me it's just the simple math equation of eat less move more. I target around 1400 total calories a day.

So, I'm back from the mission trip. It was a great week, albeit hot and we got caught in torrential downpours every day except Friday. I did not want to be calorie deficient while I was in charge of a bunch of high school students (and I didn't have control over our food) so I was way off the diet. I was hoping the physical activity would limit my increase to only 3 pounds for the week. I did not get my wish. Up about 6 pounds, although the body fat % on my scale was down a pretty good bit. I don't think I converted much into muscle. Did drink way more water than usual. We had a fun day at Universal on Friday and ate really poorly, and then celebrated both my sons' birthdays today. Back on the diet in earnest tomorrow, but I've now dug a hole for myself to be sub 200 by August 10. I think I can still do it because this may count as a cheat week and get my body out of starvation mode. Even if I don't get there by August 10, I'll continue to do what I do and will eventually get to my target.

Lots of good updates from all in here and picked up another new guy! Waiting for @belljr to start tomorrow as well :)

Good to have you back here! Hope you had a great trip — you know what to do to get back at it!

The GI issues with Metformin really do go away pretty quickly. Less than a week for me.

Must share...

-On the tennis courts this past Friday and I bumped into someone I had not seen in several months. I also recently started working with a craft beer store and have been "sampling" a lot of beers in the last 6 weeks. I was more of a Pils/Lager guy but lately have been drinking a lot of Hazy IPAs, Double Hazy IPAs and those things are calorie loaded plus I haven't been doing anything outside of tennis. I also have been busy managing and running a craft beer store several days a week and my down time has been more puff puff/sip sip lately.

MoP Rule-The Tennis Courts are not a gym. You want to go workout, that's different than playing tennis for 1-2 hours. I had been good for a long time at countering my calorie intake with exercise. Tennis 3-4x a week off days are walking, biking, that kind of stuff. Believe me, the tennis burns a lot of fat/calories but everything has its limits.

-When I bumped into an old tennis partner I had not seen for a few months I am greeted with this..."MoP, you look like you've put on a little weight since I last saw you"

Truth be told, the guy was doing me a favor but it's hard to hear and we're talking about maybe 10-15 lbs more than i normally carry, it sneaks up on you.
Still, I know I can do a lot better.

Turning point in my entire life came in my 20s when I was living in Eastern Europe and came home over Thanksgiving. I see my aunt and the first thing she says is, "The food over there must be very good!" Kind of a rude thing to say, but it absolutely woke me up. Within a couple weeks I had started a running routine that I continue to this day. Which isn't to say it's been smooth sailing the entire time, but there was definitely a before and after that remark

Hope so. Only day 3 for me (well 4 but haven't taken yet) and getting frustrated.

Man, that was a setback. Weight is a fickle thing. There is no way I ate an additional 3500 calories per day, plus I was outside sweating a ton. I drank a lot of water. The body fat percentage showed a decline on my scales, but I'm not a big believer in the accuracy of that thing. I knew I would put some weight on because I enjoyed the cookies, and ate hamburgers and fries for the first time in almost 2 months, but that was really discouraging. I know it can flip, and I've set an arbitrary date to lose the weight, but it is disheartening.

Did go to the gym this morning and do 30 minutes treadmill. Props to my wife who joined with me and my 14 year old daughter who surprised me this morning waking me up and telling me let's go. Their support helped a lot.
That is awesome! Having real life motivators is a great thing. I met my friend for spin class tonight and will be going back to my exercise classes tomorrow and Thursday.

I’m jumping on board the 1500 kcal train. I’ve put on some weight recently because I fell into the “eff it” stage of frustration. Back at it. Starting weight yesterday was 222.8. Went to the gym after work for strength work (thats not new), and wound up at about 1100 kcal for the day (gross intake) which is obviously too low. I was 220.2 this morning.

Today is not a gym day, but I may take the dog to the park, so I’ll get some extra steps.

You will be fine. A lot of the weight is likely your body taking back on water/“inflammation” and some of those results will reverse quickly. The rest of it? You know what to do, and you’ve already proven you can do it!!

One of the reasons I think it's a good idea to weigh yourself every day is that it takes the pressure off of any single day's measurement. I'm sure we've all had those days where our weight shoots up for some inexplicable reason and then immediately comes back down. If that one day happens to be the one day that week that you weigh in, you'll freak yourself out unnecessarily

I *get* to weigh in tomorrow for the first time in 4 days. I fear that it will be ugly — but I’m going to do it anyway.

Have been on the road for work all week, making poor food choices. Just hoping the damage isn’t too bad.

Been under 1500kcal/day since Monday. Haven’t really struggled. I have been going through the water purge, as I’ve had to get up to pee at night the past 2 nights, which is abnormal for me. Weighed in this morning at 217.8, so down roughly 4lbs.

Official post vacation weigh-in: 188.8

It was a struggle - I was trending in a bad direction and had to cut out all alcohol the last 4 days of the trip. Down one pound after 13 days at the beach is a big win for me. In the past I would easily come back up 5-10 pounds.

Ok, back from 3 weeks of vacation - 2 at the beach and one week at Disney. I was at 192.8 this morning. Slightly disappointed going up but only 3 pounds over 3 weeks - I'll take it. I know I'm holding some water weight and should be able to knock the 3 pounds off quickly. Starting today until late in August I'll be going full out with my "program".

Lots of water, IF, pushups, walking, no sugar, no alcohol, low carbs. Going to set a short-term goal of being at 180 by 8/26. That's not too aggressive and I leave to go on a trip that week (anniversary).

Great job keeping the impact to a minimum!!!

Was up just under a pound. Some of that is due to over consumption of salty food, etc. Back at it, tracking calories, etc. Headed out for a 6-mile run after work today as my own form of punishment for not following the plan while traveling.
