Funny real short Eli rookie story (1 Viewer)

Q: How much has he grown in the time that you've had him? Do you remember when you first got him?

A: It's light years. Like it was yesterday, I can still remember that one of the checks was "Toss here" because he couldn't think of what the term was, so we've come a long way from that point. He prides himself on being able to be an extension of us – of the coaches – and he does a terrific job of that. I've said many times, a lot of the success of our running game is attributed to the fact that he knows what the weaknesses are in the front and where to direct and what plays to get in and out of and he does a tremendous job of that.

Q: Was that in a training camp practice?

A: Oh no. That was in a game.

Q: Was it his first game?

A: No, but it was the first year.

Q: Had to be the Ravens.

A: The Ravens – that's a great one. They were just toying with him, turning their back on him and everything else because he was trying to point out who the mike was and when he'd go to point out who it was they'd turn around and show him their number. It was not a good day.

I was at that game. It was comical. Here's the AP description of the game:

A redemptive performance by the Baltimore Ravens’ defense sent an ineffective Eli Manning to the sidelines, where he dejectedly watched the final minutes of the New York Giants’ sixth straight loss. Manning accounted for half of the Giants’ six turnovers, and Baltimore took full advantage of the miscues in a 37-14 victory Sunday.

Kyle Boller threw a career-high four touchdown passes for the Ravens, but his performance was overshadowed by a defense that permitted only 55 yards through the first three quarters. Soon after that, New York coach Tom Coughlin mercifully pulled the rookie in favor of veteran Kurt Warner in the fourth quarter. Manning went 4-for-18 for 27 yards and two interceptions—a 0.0 quarterback rating—and lost a fumble before taking a seat.

“I don’t know if I can pin it on one thing. I didn’t play well, I missed throws, I made bad decisions,” he said. “You’ve got to give some credit to the Ravens’ defense.”

Coming off two straight losses in which they allowed a combined 39 fourth-quarter points, the Ravens (8-5) held New York (5-8) scoreless until Warner drove the Giants for a meaningless touchdown with 3:49 left.

“Our young quarterback obviously struggled today. I gave him every opportunity to work his way through it; it was obvious at one point that it wasn’t going to happen today,” Coughlin said. “Kurt played very well at the end of the game, but Eli is still the starting quarterback.”

Did you notice them egging him on like that?

And wow that quote from Coughlin must've almost hurt to say.

ETA lmao at the AP writer "mercifully pulled the rookie"

I didn't see them necessarily turning their backs, but the LBs and DBs were doing all kinds of crowding up to the line of scrimmage - both faking the blitz to rattle Eli and also overloading the line to the point they were obviously tempting him to pass. You could kind of tell something was going on; I thought it was that they were begging him to throw because every single time he dropped back that game, it seemed there was a likelihood of a sack, INT or fumble. It truly felt like the Ravens had a chance to score every time New York had the ball.Edited to add: I just looked at the AP story again -- 55 yards through three quarters? No wonder it felt like every Giants play had the potential to be a good play for the Ravens. I don't really remember the Warner stuff at the end, but I was drunk and it was full-on mop-up duty by then.
