Game of Thrones, tv only, books don't exist, no backstory...NERDS already ruining a series that hasn't started (4 Viewers)

Here's a question I have - You know how the Red Witch is always thirsting for King's blood, right? Well, wasn't Maester Aemon the son and brother of a King? I wonder why she didn't go after his blood?
I don't want to get flayed here but...she did in the books.
cool. any other book stuff you want to share with us in this non-book thread?
Sure.

Jamie and Bronn never went to Dorne in the books.
Why don't you post in the varsity thread? Why is it so hard to comprehend "books don't exist" in the thread title? I know that nothing you're saying amounts to a spoiler but it doesn't matter. Some of us watch the show and then read the books and don't want to know what does/doesn't happen.
Someone posted that it was odd that something didn't happen. I thought it would be notable to point out that it's a good thing to note since it was written in the book that way. As you say, it's not a spoiler, so what's the big deal?

As the show is passing the book in many respects, I didn't think mentioning the fact that books exist would still get to so many panties in a bunch. There's a whole thread about the Daredevil TV series and once in awhile someone mentions some context from the comics - amazingly it doesn't result in a bunch of whining.

In any case, a thousand apologies, I'll stop upsetting you so much.
I was going to defend you until I saw your name. Now I'm down for your lynching.

Not sure what show you guys are watching but I'd bet some of you complain about The Walking Dead when there isn't much action either.

This last show was pretty darn good. Moved like six stories forward. Showed good parallels between a couple and showed how different parts of the game are being played. Makes you think a little bit as to the overall game of chess being played. Maybe that is too much for some of you.
Walking Dead was boring after a few seasons, so yep, I complained about that.

Not sure what you show you guys are watching. Like I said before, my big beef is that they killed off a lot of the most interesting characters (to me at least), and unlike others seasons, nobody has been introduced to take their place. This game of chess you speak of isn't as interesting when novices are playing it. Kill Tywin, have Tyrion on a silly road trip, Varys disappears, etc.. and you are left watching the likes of Cersei and Stannis playing. LF has been around, and watching him position himself is one of the highlights of the season. Hopefully they can correct it a bit with Tyrion in position to play a little and bringing the Queen of Thorns back in the mix.

Mix that with the other interesting characters not doing much for the first 1/2+ of the season. Arya washing corpses, Dany still sitting on her ###, Jamie and Bronn in the horrible Dorne plotline. I would say that it is easily the weakest stretch of episodes this series has seen.

I am hopeful that they can turn this around, but there are only 3 episodes left. I am sure they have an "oh ####" moment for us up their sleeve as well. I thought season 2 had some slow moments, but this is about the first time in 5 seasons that I haven't been annoyed if I didn't catch the show right away. There was always a few plotlines that were great in each season, or a character that we see changing or coming into their own. Just haven't seen that this year.

Where I didn't like it was in the idea that they were shoehorning the theme of relationships; primarily displaying the various relationships between loved ones. IMO, when showrunners start trying to tie a theme to every episode of a serial story instead of just naturally progressing the story....the story suffers. I'd have to go back and see if GOT has been doing this more.....but I do feel that The Walking Dead very much suffers from this.
You talking romantic relationships, or in general mother/son, etc..?

Always curious if the romantic ones are just a fluke of if it is a conscious decision (maybe to broaden their viewer base?). Most of them they linger too much on seem out of place - Robb and his wife, Greyworm/Missandei, Sam/Gilly, Marsella/Tristan, Dany/current man meat, etc...

I think what is missing from the current season is a good character arc that is driving the season and seemed to be in every episode. We have had Ned, Tyrion, Jamie's turnaround, Jon, Theon and Dany in the first few seasons pushing it through. So far this season has lacked that. Maybe a couple are going to have that happen - Sansa, Ayra? But there has been a lot of jumping and episodes where characters aren't in. Seems like everybody is about the same as where they were at the start of the season character-wise.

There are reasons to be concerned. We have now gone into "tv only books don't exist" story arcs. Hopefully the show writers are as smart as they think they are.

It was a weird combo...you had Stannis - Red Woman/Daughter, Gilly - Sam, Jamie - Mysella, Ramsey - Sansa, Jorah - Dany - Wolfman she's marrying, other dude she's banging, Cersei - Tommen,.....and I know there was at least one more. It seemed like they were trying to convey some theme at the expense of an actual plot.

Agreed. Characters seem very stagnant and there seems to be a lot of build up with no real payoff so far. Hate to admit, but unless they blow us away with the remaining 3 episodes....I'll have to say this season suffered from the same meandering and pace that people criticize Martin and his......rectangular things that have a lot of pages and words in them.....as having. Kind of funny in those regards as I thought the show creators would have been very much on point.

I think it is premature to judge a season before it has concluded, and while I understand and agree with some of the criticisms, I'm still loving this series.
No kidding. We're at the final 3 episodes of the season, the fireworks are about to go off. Can't have a Red Wedding every episode

Refresh my memory: did Davos get his fingers cut off for letting the ******* go? Or does Stannis not know that's how he escaped?

If you look back over the seasons, the general rule has been static vs changing characters. If a character changes over time, they're generally safe. Tyrian, Jon Snow, Arya, Sansa. If a character is a one trick pony and never changes, they're eventually written off. Ned, Tywin, Joffrey, Cat Stark.

I look at this season so far as a reset of sorts. So many characters have been killed off and so many stories are going at once, they need to sort of reset the playing field again.

His fingers were cut off for being a smuggler prior to the beginning of the show. Part of his back story.
Ok, then what did Stannis have him locked up for, for awhile? Was that for letting the kid go?
Yes, I think so. Actually, I think he had him locket up twice, if I recall. Once for letting him go? And once for. . .?

yea.. you might be too smart for this show ;) or me not smart enough.

For whatever reason this might be my favorite season so far.

Everything seems to slow to a crawl when Sam and Gilly are involved. Maybe they need to go to the other side of the wall and never be seen again?

Yeah, I don't get this at all. I'm always happy when they cut to Sam and Gilly. They salvaged a doomed baby, had multiple encounters with White Walkers, including killing one, Sam fought the wildling invasion while hiding Gilly and baby from harm, Sam advised Jon Snow a bunch, he had a great scene with Stannis recently, and now we got a sex scene out of them too. They're among the few likable characters whose story line hasn't been filled with death and darkness.

Am I off base here? Does anyone else find them boring?

I like Sam, but Gilly just annoys me for some reason. I think the actor playing Sam does a good job.

Ive been complaining how boring they are since Gilly was introduced

Nothing you say is wrong, I just don't like the characters and could do without them. But I don't have very many complaints about this show so I seem to be in the minority.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To each their own. I'm a sucker for a likeable underdog story, I guess.

Eh, maybe they are the underdogs. They are certainly more innocent than most in the story. Dany's story was boring just because it was too much rinse repeat, but her character is very likeable and I'm hoping now with Tyrion there she is in it a lot more and actually doing more stuff. She still has the sexiest scene in the entire show, even with our new found friends in Dorne.

I get what you are saying. I like Sam a lot more now that he grew some balls. Before that it was stumbling and bumbling and doing things on accident. Never cared about the Sam and Gilly love story though.

I know you guys have probably already discussed and moved on (can't possibly keep up with this thread)..but the way my FB blew up and overall Internet discussions I expected to the Sansa rape scene to be utterly disturbing...like something that might change me as a human by the way I kept hearing about it...then I watch it and what the hell?

Did it get edited by the time I got the replay? I didn't see anything all that disturbing. Bolton just bent her over and you see her face on the bed...while Wreak cries.

That can't really be the full scene...can it?

If so...where's my outrage? How can people be so overly upset? Especially in light of the graphic and brutal sex scenes we've had over the years in this very show? This is the one that causes a stir?

How does anyone watch that scene and get outraged but didn't get outraged by what happened to Wreak? For God's sake...the dude is right there in the scene and you somehow forget his plight and think, "Poor Sansa"?! What the hell is wrong with people?

Someone please explain this to me...or link me the unedited scene...thanks.

I thought he was locked up for continually telling Stannis to ditch the red drapes lady when Stannis told him to cut it out and deal with it.

The cliff notes:

The show has a history of how they display sex/violence, they use rape a lot, and that is a hot button topic for people.

...and evidently it didn't change Reek at all.

The guy playing Samwell is actually a pretty dang good actor. Not on the level of Peter but he is likely top 5 in terms of acting ability in the whole series.

As for the story- I enjoy the ride as a whole. There are certain points in the ride I love and certain points that I am not so much in love with. For me, other than the first two Sand Snake scenes that were absolutely painful to watch, I have no gripes about the series at all. And really, my gripes about those scenes was that the 'quality' that is normally always there in this series was so lacking in every way. The directing was bad, the writing seemed lacking and the acting was not good at all.

Has there been a change of guard in the writers/directors? I know Martin isn't writing episodes so he can get on with those one things, but not sure if something else changed too.

As tired as I have gotten with the story, I think Theon is one of the better actors now too.

Wait... I can't decide if that was funny or just :X

DB and David wrote the last one for sure. Not sure why I caught that in the credits but did. Not sure how much they have wrote through the series. I remember Martin having written one episode I think.

Yea, Theon acting chops have been on showcase. Before it was hard to tell because his character was just one note. The last few scenes have given him a chance to stretch those acting muscles and he has done an excellent job.

I agree that they are likable and you raise some good points. But there seems to be too many slow parts in between the good ones with these two.

So Margary and loras get out on the mothers mercy? Is that what they called it? and the cersi goes to trial?
All three of them are in jail now.
Well sparrow described a bailout plan for the Tyrell's that involve them admitting their sins and begging for the mothers mercy, punishment is relative to how sorry they are or something.
I could see Cercei asking for mothers mercy, and then getting raped by boars as her mercy.

I guess...just seems odd how I've never seen one post of outrage on FB or anywhere really...before this scene. The most tame of sex scenes this show has ever shown. Honestly...can you think of a sex scene that showed less on this show? But this is the one that tipped the scales and caused people to get up in arms?

Damn...wow...I guess this scene caused a rift in here as well.Oh well...sorry guys...I don't get the outrage.

Guess we'll continue to see dudes get raped and sexually mutilated without even blinking but one female gets bent over and it's the end of the world.

It's so odd how men are becoming completely disposable and an afterthought and no one tries to pump the breaks on this over feministic agenda that keeps getting crammed down our throats.

Each season of Game of Thrones is like a rollercoster ride. You have to have some slow parts where the roller coaster ascends to the top of a drop, they're necessary for the giant, wildly fun descent.

I was on my phone posting that....

Given how the scene between Cercei and the Sparrow played out- how they made such a point about laying out the options- I think they'll likely have Cercei try to play her way out of it by asking for the mother's mercy, thinking she's getting a leg up. but IIRC, the Sparrow left a lot of room for variables in how he described what happens- depends on the level of contrition, etc, etc. She'll go this route, but it'll be worse for her than doing a trial.
