Game of Thrones, tv only, books don't exist, no backstory...NERDS already ruining a series that hasn't started (3 Viewers)

There's definitely some kind of trickery going on with Arya/the waif....supposedly the actress who plays Arya said something to the effect of "people have seen Arya on screen, they just didn't know it was Arya" recently.

Also as far as "spoilers" go, I have to agree that while I really like reading boards like this and reddit after the episodes air, it made a lot of this season less surprising. When they showed the hound I was just like "yep, CleganeBowl coming".
Good grief.

OK. Feel free to come down from the high horse. There is a difference between speculation and people posting that he's going to be back in the next couple weeks. Stannis sure isn't coming back and whether you like it or not, it wasn't not assumed he'd be returning because he wasn't shown dead, it was assumed because he wasn't dead in the books. Let's be honest, most of the "speculation" is from spoilers (Benjen's character leaked on IMDB, posted in here) or from the book (Hound not dead in the books).
To be fair, The Hound is not alive in the books.

Well, now we know he is alive.  But in the books he was left for dead.  We were told he was dead and buried.  There is a character, seen in the distance, referred to as the Grave Digger, who book readers had speculated was The Hound - but there was never any direct evidence he was alive in the books.

If the return of the Hound is 'spoiled' by message board banter then you must not have much of an imagination. Or clue.

It's been all but assumed he'd return since he was never shown as actually, you know... dead.
Sorry have to disagree here. A lot of people speculated the hound might come back because we never actually saw him die and I'm fine with that. But it was basically ruined in this thread with "speculation" that he'd return in this episode.

Yeah, I'm not shocked the hound returned. I was letdown because whether it was a good guess or not, that singular post all but confirmed it to me. I knew it right then and there so when he popped up on the screen I was the farthest thing from shocked.

the arya storyline needs to go somewhere...feels like I've wasted my time on it for 2 years now.
This has been her storyline from the start of the show  Season 1: shoots an arrow better than Bran, practices the sword non stop, gets a private instructor... blah blah blah

Those guesses must have come late in the week before the episodes because I didn't see either one of them. I avoid spoilers but kinda thought the Hound might be coming back at some point but didn't know it was happening last night so it was a surprise to see him chopping wood. I had no clue about Benjen last week.
I guessed in here that the Hound would be coming back at some point. also guessed that grey-joys would run with their ships to dragon-lady.

this is the only place I come to talk or think about this stuff- should we not discuss ideas or theories that we make up in our heads about future episodes? kinda why I come here in the first place- discuss what happened and how what's happened will affect what might happen.

I disagree. Her storylines with Tywin and the Hound were terrific. She's a great character. You could make an argument she's Ned's strongest child (although Sansa's making a real run this season), especially if the rumors are true about Jon's true parentage. But the whole faceless assassin storyline has bored me. I really want it to come to an end and get her back to Westeros.

Yup. I think that's the fun of it too and like you this is the only forum where I talk about the show and I also enjoy speculating on what might happen next. I think what's happening is some people believe there are folks who are using actual spoilers instead of guesses, though.

Arya is my favorite character still. I get how her story was sorta stuck in place for a season and a half but it's moving now!

After she showed her wits and condfidence when haggling with the ship captain for passage I was grinning ear to ear thinking alright, Arya is a full fledged bad ### now! That moment was fleeting as a second later the old lady crept up on her and I had a completely different emotion.

Such a great show.

It's a shame because when all the faceless men stuff started I thought it was awesome and was looking forward to the next episode to see where they would take it next.

....it's been a LONG time since I've felt that way.

Again  with me in particular, my only complaint was numerous people guessing hound would return this week.

what was Theo's deal during shore leave?  seemed like he wanted nothing to do with those women.  did they allude to him being gay in an earlier episode?  seems like it'll be tough to find an Iron Born air now that Yara is out of the closet
I hope this is shtick

He was castrated by Ramsey Bolton.

I'd be depressed too.

yeah- ok.

I mean- if I saw something outside of my own imagination... like from IMDB or some news article/reddit whatever, I'd be sure to put a spoiler tag on it. otherwise... not.

I don't remember that happening (very well could have). I do remember a lot of discussion last week about him not being shown as completely dead on the show, so likely/hopeful to come back... at some point... and further discussion about other characters who have come back or not been shown as dead. did somebody get specific about THIS week and the hound?

Same thing last week about Benjen. Speculation is great, I really enjoyed the Lost thread for all that discussion, but these were too well timed.
I missed that one too- was totally surprised by Benjen (and even had to remember wth he was). I guess good thing I just skim in here and refrain from reading the spoilers. or did somebody post that outside of spoilers? a person with a much better memory than me could reasonably make that assumption, IMO- we knew somebody was going to save them, but who is available that far north? not a long list of suspects.

Also, why didn't Sansa and Jon just talk to Ned and Robb about retaking Winterfell.  Robb has a huge army.

The fact that Ian McShane was in the episode didn't necessarily mean that the Hound was alive.

But in general I agree that anything referencing or linking to IMDB should be in spoilers. I think someone pointed out that IMDB had the Benjen actor reappearing this season, which was a give away obviously, but IIRC that was in spoiler tags.

From reading Reddit, the reason people thought the hound was coming back was because after the High Sparrow revealed he had Tommen on his side the theory is that Cersei will request a trial by combat and we'll get The Hound vs The Mountain like we've always wanted. Once that happened, we just needed to see that the Hound was alive and as we know they sure didn't waste any time last night letting us know.

As far as the title of the episode, "The Broken Man" could easily refer to Jon. His spirit seems gone right now as I mentioned earlier. He's pushing forward mainly because Sansa wants him to and he believes he should because that's his sister and he has to do right by her. I don't think he has any other motivation to fight at this point. Something or someone needs to light a fire under him or Ramsay is gonna kick his ### but good.

But that would involve the Hound getting back to King's Landing and ignores asking the question why he would want to go back there in the first place and also ignores the even bigger question of why he'd want to fight for the Sparrow. Just to try and kill his brother? I think he'd need a better reason than that.

Or Theon since he fell off the wagon and started drinking again

Well the entire show the Hound has talked about how much he hates his brother, so yeah I would've thought that would've been enough.

But I guess that's why they added the extra 10 minutes with Ian McShane and the dead folk. That way Ian could give that speech and stare at the hound when talking about doing some good in the world and all that, making him want to return to his former life in Kings Landing and finish off the mountain once and for all.

I guess. I've thought all along The Sparrow has been plotting one step ahead of Cersei the whole time so my guess is he's anticipating her trial by combat plan and if so that means he already has his plan for that as well. If so, that wouldn't involve the Hound since he seemingly wouldn't know the Hound is alive.

The show has been a spoiler for book readers for most of this season, including on Stannis, Jon Snow and now the Hound. In the books, Stannis is still alive and hoping to take Winterfell, become king. The Hound and Jon Snow are still dead as far as book readers know.  I think the only way book readers can spoil anything at this point is just through being much more familiar with the backstory and able to spot things and speculate.

at first I thought Mcshane's character was going to be an offshoot of Sparrow's band, which would put the Hound with Sparrow. but yeah- no idea given what we saw- how or why the Hound would go back anywhere near his brother, even if it seems like the obvious end-game for their characters.

His brother burnt him.  I have to imagine that's a good enough reason.

Sandor had plenty of chances to kill Gregor in the past if he wanted to. There needs to be additional motivation if they're gonna fight.

I know what his brother did but I agree with EYLive's post there would have to be additional motivation. And also see my last post involving the Sparrow being one step ahead of Cersei the whole time.

wait?  when did that happen? is that why his face is like that?
I know this is just lame schtick but my wife actually asked what happened to his face. :wall:

To be fair though she's not really a fan and often falls asleep during the show.

My wife thought Edmure was the guy that saved Bran last week

Plus everyone knows not to actually come into the thread until they watch the latest episode.
