Tales of Dunk and Egg is a series of fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin, set in the world of his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. They follow the adventures of "Dunk" and "Egg", some 90 years before the events of the novels.

Three novellas have been published–The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010)–and Martin has stated his intention to continue the series . A collection of the existing three novellas, with illustrations by Gary Gianni, was published as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on October 6, 2015.

I'm not reading them again.  Don't get me wrong they were great but it took me a long time to get through them.  And I am a fairly fast reader

I did the first 3 last summer for the first time...  I enjoy the books for what they are and appreciate the extra detail, but I wasn't quite as blown away by them being a show watcher first. Definitely not to the point I thought I would be. The red wedding for instance had a much larger impact on me in the show than reading through it. 

Ill probably read the last two (and any further books) in the future, but I'm content to let the story unfold on my tv.

I would stay out of this thread for a bit...  there are some things that can be said pretty innocuously at this point that could spoil major plot points for you.  

Also you're lucky getting to see this fresh.  I liked the show a good bit through season 2, but season 3 is where it jumped up into the stratosphere for me and I needed to consume everything.

Ned's execution set the tone for the series. Much like the rest of you, the Red Wedding came at me from out of nowhere. The series has settled in some so I'm not looking for completely out-of-the-blue stuff but those two events very seminal moments in the series.

Back when there was no show, I would recommend this series to anyone that hadn't read it. I would give them this advice: when you get to the line, "The things I do for love," if you aren't hooked or are lukewarm on the books put them down and find something else.

I did something similar. I would say, "If in the first 10 chapters, you don't sit up and say, 'Holy ####### ####,' then move on to an autobiography because fiction isn't for you." I think that was around chapter 7. I didn't want to say the specific chapter so they would know when it would happen. I like your method better. Telling the line right after the shove.

Interesting. I've never read the books and thought it might be fun to go back and read them, but that's not a ringing endorsement. With 3 boys, a job, a dog and a working wife, not sure I would bother with the time commitment. I love the show. I'd probably enjoy more re-watching the show before the next season starts. I didn't have HBO until after I binged watched the first 3 seasons before the 4th season. I can tell you that this show is even better when you have 30 hours waiting for you on DVR.

Yeah, I was thinking that the books might be so much more expansive. His comment that having watched all of the show, which is now past the books, kind of took the wind out of the books makes sense. Not worth the time.

Me too. I almost quit immediately after the opening scene with the nights watchmen running into the white walkers - I was thinking, great another zombie show, no thanks. I stuck with it to the end of the episode, and Jamie pushing Bran out the window so nonchalantly hooked me. Such great writing through the 1st 3 books.

For sure book 1 and season 1 are VERY similar.  There are some great scenes that were show only though. 

For me personally, I highly doubt I would have gotten through the first book if I had tried that first for a couple reasons:  1. I don't ever read fantasy, so it was really nice to have heard the names/places and have a little background with that, and 2.  It was nice to have older people in my head and not have to think too much about the 12 and 13 year old characters running around. 

I usually can't read something after I have watched it, but those things really helped here.  Sure there are things a bit different in the books, but not sure how many people could get through them all after seeing all of the show now  just to see that Sansa and Brienne are in different situations.

I don't want to deter - they're very good. Some things in particular like Arya making her way to the Twins had lots of details that never made it to the show. 

It is a pretty significant time investment, though. 6k pages or so among the currently released books.
