Very close on whether that first foot was still down when he established possession. Certainly not as open-and-shut as the announcers made it sound.

You also have to consider more than math. Go for 2 now and miss it, and how does that affect the confidence of the players? There are intangibles that can not be factored in. You also have to consider that coaching is not a stable occupation. Coaches are often criticized when they take a risk and it does not pan out, they are often immune if general consensus was he played it safe. Sometimes the right statistical move is to "go for it", but playing it safe is in the coach's best interests.

This can be measured and your assumption is that the effect is negative.The second bolded statement is probably the reason reason coaches make -EV decisions. Their job is on the line. And you seem to suggest that you should make the wrong call for job security sake.

I don't know if they should or not, but they do.CEO's often do the same thing. Doing nothing is sometimes the best way to keep your job longer.
