Game Thread W16 - NY Giants V Washington (1 Viewer)

Can I be the first to question the officiating? Did anyone else watch that whole game? From the very start when the Giants punted from the 50 and Tyree downed it at the 3, but he was forced out of bounds and came back in.
Doesn't matter. He still can't be the first to touch the ball. Being forced out only saves him from the penalty just for runningout of bounds, but it doesn't change the touch rule.

NY Times article

"They played with a different level of intensity, and we didn't match that," Giants running back Tiki Barber said of the Redskins, who needed the victory to keep their playoff hopes alive. "This game was for the season to them, and they came to play."

That message - playing a game to determine the season - was supposed to be the mind trick the Giants played on themselves. Instead, the defeat left the Giants (10-5) with nothing earned but anxiety and more spoken resolve.

"It's hard to get in the position we were in, a chance to clinch the division, the winning record that we had and everything we've accomplished," center Shaun O'Hara said. "And to come down here and not take advantage of that, it's inexcusable."...................

.......................The Giants were undone by some of what haunted their four previous losses - a soft pass defense, a missed field goal, penalties and spoiled scoring chances.

And the holding call on Chris Snee that negated the touchdown, and the very next play they don't call pass interference. There was also a weak roughing the passer call because there was a slight helmet to helmet contact.

I've seen a few games where I felt like the refs really messed up the calls, but in this game I felt like they were clearly biased. The bad calls, and lack of calls, and the announcers were all over it. "If you are gonna call holding on Snee, you gotta call that pass interference call as well."

The Giants are clearly a better team. If you have to pull a 49ers, and cheat to beat us, your future is pretty clear.

Good luck next time we play. In New York.
I agree the the officiating was horrible, and the Giants were hurt more by it than were the Redskins. The Snee call was a horrendous call, and the type which I absolutely can't stand. The ref basically saw the defensive lineman go down so he *assumed* there was holding and threw the flag. A few years back in a must win game vs. Philly (where Tiki had nearly 300 total yards and 3 fumbles), we had 2 TDs negated by horrible holding calls. Holding happens all the time, and the refs miss it all the time, which is one thing. But to try to make up for it by assuming that the DL went down because he must have been held is ridiculous. Don't call it if you didn't see it.

I also wished Coughlin would have challenged the spot on Portis' run late in the game on 3rd down. The refs gave a very generous spot (failing to note where the ball was when his knee hit the ground) and therefore a first down. On the next play, Portis ran in for a TD.

All that said, the Giants were outplayed and deserved to lose the game. Our playcalling didn't allow Tiki and the rushing game to develop. And Will Allen got burnt for 4 TDs (3 by Moss and one missed tackle on Portis).

Yes the Giants definitly got out played. And lets not forget the TD that toomer got, which should have been ruled incomplete.

Tomer's TD looked like a catch to me.

However, it was the Giants' only offensive TD of the day, and it came on a pass deflected by a receiver, over the heads of 2 defenders, and to Toomer in the end zone. Washington had broken up the completion, that ball just bounced oddly and Toomer made a good play.

There are video highlights of the game on This Page, including Shockey jawing at a ref while the defender guarding him runs back an interception Shockey was unaware of.

The calls defintely went the Redskins way, but to say that the Giants are clearly a better team is a real reach at this point. The Giants, with one free extra home game from the league (as long as we are talking about league bias) only have a one game advantage on the Redskins. And yes, the Redskins didn't look terrific mid-season, but that was largely because of an inability to win the giveaway/takeaway battle and avoid stupid mistakes. Based on how both teams are playing RIGHT NOW, I don't think it's clear that the Giants are a better team. Many of the Skins glaring deficiencies: lack of a power running attack, need to create turnovers, etc. appear to be on the mend...they are not the same team right now as earlier this year. Either way, the Redskins CLEARLY outplayed the Giants yesterday...no way you can argue that the Giants deserved to win that game. Funny, in the middle of the season, it was Redskin fans complaining about the officials. Against Tampa Bay, we "should have won, but got jobbed at the end." Now it's the Giants crying foul. I think that calls balance out in the end by the end of the season. Giants are clearly not a team that have suffered from league bias, particularly with an extra home game given to them this year.

After the gifts the Giants were given in the Minnesota game earlier this season (a game they still couldn't win despite being on the receiving end of at least three blatantly wrong calls), Giants fans have a lot of nerve #####ing about it going against them in a game. Not to mention the extra home game the NFL gave them.

I agree that the calls went the Skins way. However, there is no way that the Giants are playing better than the Skins yesterday. As fatness said, "the Skins scored 5 offensive TDs; The Giants had one." And I might add that it was on a fluke tipped pass, which btw was a questionable call that went the Giants way.
