Game Thread W5 - New England V Denver (1 Viewer)

Those have got to be the worst looking uni's I've ever seen!! They are blinding, especially the socks!!!

Moreno fumbles the ball. Despite the guys upstairs for the Broncos having plenty of time to see that it clearly was a fumble, Denver throws a late challenge flag, anyway. I really hate the desperation challenge- just because you're sad that a play happens doesn't mean you should waste a timeout and potentially TWO challenges (because if you win two challenges, you get a third, so by making a challenge that's guaranteed to lose, you lose out on one challenge for sure and the opportunity for a second).

Surprise of the game so far- New England's typically porous offensive line has been stonewalling Denver's typically fearsome pass rush. I'll be curious to see if this holds up for the whole game. If it is, then Denver is toast.

What's wrong with BB. Concusion?? Wearing NFL Nice clothes/no sweats???? Something must be wrong with him.

Could it be him roll back uniform?

I don't think they could find any throw back hoodies to cut up.

Probably playing a mind game. He expected McDaniels to wear a hoodie in tribute to Belichick, so Belichick wore a nicer outfit to throw McDaniels off.

Your RB is averaging 5 per carry based on consistent success (as opposed to padding with long gainers). Your QB is Kyle Orton. Here's a hint: the correct call on 3rd and 2 is not a pass play.

I really think teams should use the QB Sneak a *LOT* more on 4th and inches, regardless of field position. Does anyone (Chase?) know the success rate of 4th-and-inches QB sneaks? I think I can only ever remember seeing one instance where it failed.

Wilfork is huge.
When Marcus Thomas was at Florida, he nicknamed his belly "Scoop" and said that every time he got a tackle, Scoop got credited with the assist. Vince Wilfork is so massive that I think his stomach counts as its own DT.I was just about to type how Denver was getting no pressure, but then Denver called a blitz and Davis squirted right through the line. Nice to see Nolan react and call a blitz, but I'm still nervous at how much time Brady has to throw.

Holy freaking hell... Tom Brady throws a pass. It's ruled complete. Josh McDaniels throws his challenge flag. ON A THREE YARD COMPLETION ON 2nd AND 10! I don't care if the call was wrong or not! It was three yards! It was 2nd and 10! It's the difference between 3rd and long and 3rd and very slightly longer. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!?!?!

And just like that, Denver is out of challenges for the rest of the game. Awesome. I can't see any possible way how this could come back to bite us.

Have to agree, horrible use of resources.

Denver has no business going to an empty backfield on 1st and 10. Seriously.

And as I'm typing, Moreno demonstrates why. For my money, this is the best offensive line in football.

I was thinking the same thing when the situation arose. It's really easy to pick up a few inches on a QB sneak. I'm not sure I remember ever seeing a QB sneak get stuffed with just inches to go.According the Data Dominator, QB rushes on fourth and one are successful about 90% of the time. (From 2002 until the present, there have been 300 QB rushes on fourth and one; 272 resulted in either first downs or touchdowns, for a 90.67% success rate. I'd guess that nearly all were sneaks as opposed to draws, scrambles, etc. I don't know what proportion were with inches to go instead of a couple feet or more.)

The Patriots are rolling coverage towards Marshall and Gaffney, leaving Royal alone on the left with a big cushion, and Denver's just feasting on the matchup. This is the third time this drive that Royal's just run a simple curl or comeback for an easy wide-open 10-15 yard gain.

Edit: And the Pats choke up coverage on Royal leaving Marshall one-on-one on the right. TD Denver.

Thanks for the numbers, Maurile. I suspected it was something like that. With a 90% conversion rate, I'd go for it in pretty much any situation on 4th and inches. Especially since the true conversion is probably a bit higher than 90% (because some of those failures were on 4th and a yard).

Marshall TD, makes it look easy.
He was actually well covered but he changes directions so well and he is so big and strong he just mustles up for the ball and scores. That throw showed me that Orton has complete trust in Marshall.

New England really executes those screens very well. They're always just inches from getting stuffed, but they always get some very nice timely blocks. As a Denver fan, I really appreciate how well New England cuts on screens (and I especially enjoy being able to point out that, despite popular opinion to the contrary, Denver's not the only team that cut blocks).

Nolan's been dialing up some timely blitzes, which has solved Denver's pressure woes to some extent. I don't think Denver has gotten within 2 yards of Brady without blitzing, though.

Welker remains the best possession WR in the game.

Denver really needs to start hitting Brady if they want to win this game.

Welker dinged up, grabbing his back after a Dawkins hit. Walks off the field under his own power.

Edit: Welker's back in after one play off.
