Yup, still crazy. You're saying that the odds of the Jets recovering an onside kick were greater than forcing a punt? The usual success rate for onside kick recovery is 25%. The Pats had punted to end four of their nine previous drives this game.

The usual success rate for recovering an expected onside kick may be 25%. Surprise onside kicks fare much better.

This page talks about advanced metrics on onside kicks, showing that teams with less than a 20% chance to win do not fare all that well on onside kicks. And the same page shows that the Jets had a 15% chance to win at that point in the game. I don't think it would have caught anyone by surprise if they tried an onside kick there.
