Game Thread W8 - Minnesota V Green Bay (1 Viewer)

It was nice to get the win without Winfield. Now they have a month at home. Bye week followed by three straight home games! Nice. 7-1 with 5 road games is a sweet first half.

very :goodposting: Plus Favre throwing 7 TD's with no int's in two games against the packers is unreal. I sure Tjax would of had at least 3 ints, and no way we beat the packers on the road without Favre.

The world just seems brighter today.
:) Would have still been okay if we had lost, but winning is 100-times sweeter, especially since it gives us the tie-breaker against the Pack when it comes time to decide the NFC North division title. Now we get to hopefully get a little healthier during the bye, then try and make a little hay via some home-cookin'. We'll see...

TT is a moron.

Where is the depth? Did you really sign Green 4 days ago to come in and return kicks? That was the best option on the 53 man roster? Practice squad? Then they had a WR they just signed this week replace Driver when he was out for a play. Nice depth.

O-line stinks, Grant is awful. Maybe trade for a RB because the Packers can't draft RBs worth a ####. I love seeing Rodgers outside the pocket, know the sack is coming and just tuck the ball. Uh, you're allowed to throw it away #######.

Oh and they shoulda kept Favre and signed Rodgers to an extension. Get your cake and eat it too.

As I said earlier, same damn game as the first one. Penalties, sacks, and pressure. Couldn't get to Favre on defense.

And I've been begging for Rodgers to use his feet to make plays for weeks. He finally did it today, and it helped them a lot. If he's not going to throw it away, then he needs to take off. I think that was a step in the right direction. A little too late, but a step.

Vikes are clearly the class of the North.

B. Favre 17/28 244 4 0A. Rodgers 26/38 287 3 0
Favre ZERO sack, X hitsRodgers 6 sacks, 11 hits
Rodgers holds onto the ball way too long.
He's only been a starting QB for a year and a half so there's no reason to think he can't improve in the area.Good game Vikes...the better team definitely won.
Some QB's regress as wellSee Grossman, Derek Anderson, etc
No offense guy, but Rodgers was just named nfc offensive player of the month. I'm not seeing a regression. He takes too many sacks, just like last season. No regression though.I think the questions on Rodgers remain the same as last season. Can he stop taking sacks? Can he win the big game? Time will tell.

 Looking at the schedule at the start of year I thought 5-3 maybe if they get a few breaks 6-2.. 7-1?? :pickle: :excited:As long as they don't do anything stupid over the bye, they should be 9-1 before facing the bears :goodposting: :loco:

Derek Anderson made the Pro Bowl in 2007 throwing for 3787 with 29 td's and 19 int's.Rex Grossman 2006 september offensive player of the month....06 throwing for 3,200 23 td's and 20 int's.Not saying Rodgers will be either of these QB's.....but it is possible for successful QB's...especially young ones to regress.I am thinking that defenses get film on them and figure out tendancies....and also things that they do poorly and focus on them.

Other than the fact he admitted recently he wasn't going to change what he's doing.
Link??? I've only heard him say he needs to improve in this area. He admitted that after the 1st Vikings game.

I do feel for Packer fans. At the same time, of course, I take great pleasure in seeing a bit of turmoil in the Packers Nation after all the crap we've had to take West of the Mississippi/St. Croix over the years.

Worst-case scenario of the Vikings signing Favre was that it mildly stained his legacy with the Green and Gold. Best-case scenario is that Favre took the Vikings DEEP into the playoffs and a trip to Miami. I still don't think the Vikings have the hops to get past 2-3 other teams in the NFC (the Saints and whomever comes out of the NFC East, though today's games have made that a mess between the Giants, Eagles and Cowboys). However, Favre signing with the Vikings seems to have become far more than just a "mild stain" on his legacy in Green Bay. We'll just have to see how the next 2-3 months play out. 2-0 against the Pack this year has to hurt...quite a bit.

somebody somewhere with authority should fire a lot of people just because of this.Ahman Green????

Having watched the whole game, I thought McCarthy's decision to attempt that 51-yard FG with 5:43 left was a terrible one. The miss gave Minnesota the ball at the 41, and with the short field, they went down and sealed the win. Why not go for it and give yourself a chance to take the lead?

If you are a Packer fan I'd expect that you would have known this.http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/64331777.html
 Sorry I don't read every article about the Packers.

"I did hold the ball probably a couple times too long" Rodgers said. Quote right from this article where he admits it. Rodgers is a young QB with a lot to learn. I'm guessing with more experience and more games of him getting his butt kicked he'll change his tune. Remember Favre in his 2nd year? He would constantly throw the ball away by chucking it as far as he could in the middle of the field. He eventually learned not to do that but he was stubborn and it took a while to break him on that habit. Rodgers will learn to get rid of the ball quicker (despite what he says) or he'll have a short career.

 I don't recall Ahman Green ever being known for being a kick returner in his prime so I'm wondering who thought it would be a good idea to put him back there. If they were so hard up for a return why didn't they look at bringing in Aaron Stecker? I guess this happens when you carry 3 fullbacks on your roster.

My thoughts while watching the game:

-The Vikings are a very good football team that could be even better if they'd stop shooting themselves in the foot with stupid turnovers.

-Leslie Frazier needs to look at the tape and figure out what to do when the Vikings are in nickle coverage. Greenway may be their fastest LB, but he's terrible in coverage(Havner was in his zone on both of his TDs) and he misses too many open field tackles. I really had hoped for more from his by this point. I would put Leber in with EJ on nickle downs at this point if I were the DC.

-Percy Harvin is the best all around football player from last year's draft and the Vikings stole him at 22. It's uncanny for a 21 year old WR to make such big plays. Teams need to start kicking away from him at this point.

-The Vikings made a mistake not doing everything possible to bring Birk back. I know he wasn't as dominating last year as in year's past, but Sullivan cannot seem to get a good push on NTs and it's become a big problem in their run game.

-Sidney Rice is a stud. Within 3 years he and Harvin will be considered one of the best WRs duos in the league.(assuming the Vikings find someone to get them the ball after Favre goes)

-The Vikings need to be looking for a big time NT early in next year's draft. Watching all the plays that Pat W makes in the run game is astounding. He is the key to their run stopping prowess and they'll be a lot more generous in the running game if they fail to find a good successor. He's 37 and I don't see him staying past next season.

-Childress isn't as bad of a coach as everyone wants to believe he is.

-Aaron Rodgers is gonna need to spend 4 hours in the tub after that game. He took some monster hits. Glad to see him play through the pain at the end. The Packers have a good thing with him at the helm, but Ted needs to find some lineman to keep him clean. Also, he needs to be taught how to throw a slant. You can't honestly tell me that there wasn't one slant route open all game long.

-Mike McCarthy is terrible. GB should be way better than they were tonight. Why was there only one screen pass called all game against that pass rush and with an ineffective run game? Why would you start the game with the same blocking scheme as the first game? Didn't you watch Pittsburgh neutralize Allen and Edwards by chipping them all game? You couldn't have tried this? Why did you continue to kick to Harvin after he blasted you early in the game?

-Donald Driver is an ageless wonder. He's almost seems to be better than he was 6 years ago. How is this possible at 34?

-Clay Matthews is going to be the linebacker that the Packers hoped AJ Hawk would be. He always seemed to be around the ball. Good things are in his future if he stays healthy.

There were a lot more, but most of these really stuck out to me while watching.

Skol Vikings 7-1.

:) I've been telling anyone who will listen since Rice's rookie season that Sidney Rice = Greg Jennings if he only had a QB and a coach who was willing/able to then open up the playbook a bit more. Bloom probably cursed my name for asking my homer advice on Rice heading into 2008 (still didn't have a QB), but this year Rice is finally showing his potential on Sunday. You watch the guy in Camp and he is a beast! Big, strong, fast, good hands. Then he would get nicked and/or have a QB throwing routes down around his ankles.Rice didn't just "get it" this year. He's finally got someone to throw him the ball...and his coach has a QB he can trust enough to chisel a little bit of the rust off the passing section of the playbook. Now if Favre gets hurt or retires FOR REAL in the off-season (lol), and Childress is too proud/stubborn to find someone better than TJax or Rosenfels to lead this team, Rice will regress on-paper. Did Rice regress though, or did the supporting cast and play-calling around him drag him down like a boat anchor?

What a difference a year makes. Before it was Minny fans wanting Childress out, now GB fans want McCarthy gone. To be honest....I think both coaches are crap.

I've stuck up for McCarthy over the years, but it just seems like he's reached the limit he is going to achieve with this team as a head coach. He makes some very questionable decisions. I didn't like the 2 pt conversion attempt or the FG attempt last night. The penalties have been a problem since McCarthy got here. Some of that has to do with coaching, some of that has to do with TT constantly making sure this is the youngest team in the league.

Green Bay has a nice foundation, but can't turn the corner. The future looks bright with some quality young players but Green Bay has problems as well:

Both Tackle positions need to be addressed

Both Cornerbacks are very old

Ryan Grant is not a starting caliber running back

They need a punter....this has killed them for two years

Crosby isn't a good kicker. How many Packer fans actually thought he was going to make that kick?

It's difficult to address all these problems. Especially when TT doesn't use free agency. He has built a good young foundation, but needs to add some veteran experience and leadership, and needs to plug the holes. Not sure if he's capable of that.

Minnesota has done a great job of drafting in the last few years. Added Jared Allen which has been huge. Signing Brett completely changed the way people have to plan for this offense. They are a solid team with a good shot to go deep in the playoffs. The thing I really like about this team, that Green Bay just doesn't do is they are great in the trenches. That's the difference maker in football today, and completely underrated. The Packers are weak on both lines and it kills them.

Harvin --> Rice

In three years (assuming the Queens have a QB that can throw) Rice will be second fiddle to one of the best WR in the game. Harvin is a freaking rookie and looks better than Rice does now.

I hope so because Rice looks like a star in the making. Did you see some of those catches he makes!
