Games Between QBs with Both Having Multiple SB Rings (1 Viewer)

It is pretty amazing that before 2010 there were only six of these games in all of NFL history (half of them in 1979), and now we have had eight more of them in just the last eight seasons.
What was the schedule formula in the 70s? Similar to now where division winners play each other?

Off the top of my head, i would think that it probably has more to do with Brady and Ben winning 2 at such a young age.

Bradshaw, staubach, and plunked all won their second rather late.

Although it's pretty weird that Bradshaw and griese only played once in the regular season.  I think there were like 8 seasons that they both played from 76 on.

The inclusion of backup QBs with multiple rings dilutes the "value" of accomplishing the feat.

I agree completely and will not merge the "backups" list with the regular one.  It was just a nerdy fun project.

One housekeeping matter.  Several years ago I made a list of games between QB's who started and won multiple titles in the pre-Super Bowl era.  That list only included NFL championship QB's.  But there were two QB's who won two AFL titles before the Super Bowl era began: George Blanda and Jack Kemp.  As luck would have it they faced off twice in Blanda's last season as a starting QB.

September 25, 1966: Houston Oilers 20 @ Buffalo 27 (Kemp 2, Blanda 2)

November 20, 1966: Buffalo 20 @ Houston Oilers 42 (Kemp 2, Blanda 2)

And finally, there's one QB who straddled the Super Bowl and pre-Super Bowl eras and won exactly one title in each: Len Dawson.  He won the 1962 AFL Championship with the Dallas Texans and then, after the franchise had relocated to Kansas City, he led them to victory in Super Bowl IV.  In 1970 the team played Johnny Unitas' Colts.  Unitas of course had previously won two titles with the Colts. So this is kind of a list of its own.

September 28, 1970: Kansas City 44 @ Baltimore Colts 24 (Dawson 2, Unitas 2)

The other day i stumbled on to Wikipedia's list of NFL rivalries. There are over 50 rivalries listed - every significant divisional, conference, and inter-conference rivalry, along with a couple historical rivalries (Raiders-Steelers from the 1972 Immaculate Reception to the early 80s, for example.)

Not listed: the New England-Pittsburgh rivalry.

Why would it be?  To be a great rivalry, it has to be competitive.

The game of the year is here! The 15th all-time matchup between QBs with two or more Super Bowl rings and the sixth such matchup featuring Brady and Roethlisberger.  Brady's been the winner in four of the five previous battles with Roethlisberger.

For all we know it could be some time before a 16th game is added to the list. Roethlisberger is almost 36 and has talked about retirement. Eli Manning is about to turn 37 and is playing poorly. And Brady is over 40 now. Some new blood may be needed to join the multiple rings club. There are currently four active QBs with one Super Bowl ring: Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Joe Flacco, and all are quarterbacking teams still in the playoff picture.

November 14, 1976: Miami 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

November 5, 1978: Dallas 16 @ 23 Miami (Staubach 2, Griese 2)

January 21, 1979/Super Bowl XIII: Pittsburgh 35/Dallas 31 (Bradshaw 2, Staubach 2)

October 28, 1979: Dallas 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Staubach 2, Bradshaw 3)

December 30, 1979/Divisional Playoffs: Miami 14 @ Pittsburgh 34 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 3)

September 22, 1985: San Francisco 34 @ LA Raiders 10 (Montana 2, Plunkett 2)

November 14, 2010: New England 39 @ Pittsburgh 26 (Brady 3, Roethlisberger 2)

October 30, 2011: New England 17 @ Pittsburgh 25 (Roethlisberger 2, Brady 3)

November 4, 2012: Pittsburgh 24 @ NY Giants 20 (Roethlisberger 2, Eli Manning 2)

November 3, 2013: Pittsburgh 31 @ New England 55 (Brady 3, Roethlisberger 2)

September 10, 2015: Pittsburgh 21 @ New England 28 (Brady 4, Roethlisberger 2)

November 15, 2015: New England 27 @ NY Giants 26 (Brady 4, Eli Manning 2)

December 4, 2016: NY Giants 14 @ Pittsburgh 24 (Roethlisberger 2, Eli Manning 2)

January 22, 2017/AFC Championship: Pittsburgh 17 @ New England 36 (Brady 4, Roethlisberger 2)

December 17, 2017: New England 27 @ Pittsburgh 24 (Brady 4, Roethlisberger 2)

The game of the year it was! And the controversial finish now means Brady is an incredible 6-1 in his matchups featuring QBs with two or more Super Bowl rings. Roethlisberger has now played in a total of 8 of these games and his record stands at 3-5. He has played in over half of the 15 games on this list.

Well, for those hoping for more matchups between QB's with two or more Super Bowl rings last week's playoff games could not have produced worse results.

1) The Steelers' loss denied us another Brady/Roethlisberger matchup which would have been the 16th addition to our list, as well as the 4th playoff game on the list.

2) Only one of the four active QB's to have won a single Super Bowl ring made the playoffs this year and Drew Brees is now eliminated from contention. So there will be no additions to the club for another season.

3) There are 3 remaining starting QB's looking for their first Super Bowl ring but even if one of those men wins a ring this year it seems incredibly unlikely he would ever repeat that feat. Foles and Keenum are starting due to injuries and Blake Bortles is Blake Bortles. (But you never know!).

Roethlisberger did announce he planned to return next season so the odds are good he and Brady will face off at least one more time.

While I would agree that Keenum isn’t likely to win another Super Bowl (if he gets one this year), I don’t think I’d call him a backup at this point. He’ll be starting in Minnesota next year or somewhere else I would think.

The game of the year is almost here! The 16th matchup in NFL history between quarterbacks with two or more Super Bowl rings and the 10th in the last 9 seasons.  But it's time to wonder if this might be the last such matchup for the foreseeable future. Brady is 41. Eli Manning turns 38 in a couple weeks and may not even be a starting QB next year. Roethlisberger is 36 and has made retirement noises before.

There are currently five active QB's with one Super Bowl ring. Of those, Drew Brees appears to be the best-positioned to win a second ring this year. But Brees turns 40 next month. How much longer will he be around? Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, and even Nick Foles have a shot to make the playoffs though none of their teams seem be of championship quality. Joe Flacco's team could make the playoffs but at the moment he is no longer starting.

For the second year in a row the Brady-Roethlisberger matchup goes down to the wire. In the end Roethlisberger emerges victorious and snaps Brady's four-game winning streak against him.  And the Steelers winning increases the chance of another playoff matchup between these two. Brady's overall record in games on this list stands at 6-2, Roethlisberger at 4-5. Incredibly, 13 of the 16 games have been started by a Pittsburgh QB.

Before 2010, there had only been 6 games in all of NFL history matching starting quarterbacks with at least two super bowl rings. Today, Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger will face off for an incredible seventh time since Roethlisberger joined Brady in the multiple rings club.

The Patriots and Giants are set to meet on October 10th. Will Eli Manning still be starting by then?

Corrected list:

should really just re-name this thread The Brady-Roethlisberger Chronicles.

With Ben Roethlisberger suffering a season-ending injury and Eli Manning losing his starting job, it is now very possible we will not see another matchup between quarterbacks with multiple super bowl rings for a very long time.

So it's only happened 17 times in NFL history, and Brady has been involved in 9 of them.  And he's 7-2 in those games.
