Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (2 Viewers)

201.YM - John, I’m Only Dancing - David Bowie

Was he telling his boyfriend he was only dancing with a girl?  Was he telling his girlfriend he was only dancing with a guy? Was he telling John Lennon to get over himself for the cross-dressing criticism?  Only Bowie knows.  We were too prude here in America for this one.
All-time write-up here. I've always wondered what the heck he was talking about, too, and I'm not that big of a Bowie fan.

I could have been clearer.

Some of my perennial draft faves are still undrafted by the field so I'm looking for opportunities to work them in.
Oh, it's no sweat. My questioning it was just out of confusion, not anything else. I thought you had searched and found no Costello picks in the first 200 rounds and it surprised me given that I could have sworn I picked two songs from him.

Round 202:

Country Rock

So Begins the Task -- Stephen Stills/Manassas

The first Manassas album (it was both a group album and a solo album -- Stills liked the people he'd gathered to back him so much that he made them into a real band for a bit) is a wonder. It's a double album, each side with its own theme, almost no filler. The theme of side 2 was country rock and this is one of its standouts. As you might have guessed from the harmony arrangement, it was first attempted by CSNY during the Deja Vu sessions and was played at some of their late 1969 shows.

Bumping this to the new page. Now including David Bowie.

Round 202.xx

Category: Yacht Rock

Song: Macintosh Plus Yung Tide

Artist: Yung Tide

Okay, so I was really digging to find something to close out categories or help close them, when I decided to give Yacht Rock another spin out of desperation for a track that would fit into the categories and not muck up the Bowie mix that will be curated by many who are many times more knowledgeable than I. So I traced the Yacht Rock movement to vaporwave of the electronica world and stumbled across MacIntosh Plus's Floaral Shoppe, which is some serious Yacht Rock, but a bit challenging and unavailable. So it led back to this somehow, which is here because of availability on Spotify and ease of listening. Sounds like Yacht Rock met trap rock sensibilities.

The category said 80s/90s, I think.  I could have taken the Buck Owens/Ringo duet they put out in the 80s of Act Naturally!  D'oh, didn't think of it!  I like this cover version by Cash anyway.
Wasn't paying attention to the category, thought it was Country Rock. Forgot it's double country channels today.

My stepmother did some COVID cleaning and sent me all kinds of crap that she had saved over the years.  It's awfully sweet to see how important your parents think these things you do are, such that they keep everything.  I went through some of it earlier today and found what appears to be my Christmas wish list from 1984, which included these gems

Did you get the warm night gown or pajamas?
I'd guess I did.  Probably a nightgown as I was really girly then.  The rest of the list, copied word-for-word:

Sweaters, like the off white one and the yellow one I have that are real comfortable and big.

Jeans (hard to buy because I'm not sure of my size)

Powder.  This is important.  It's from Merle Norman.  I'll show you what it is.

Clothes (any size, style, color)

New alarm clock (make sure it has "snooze" switch) (cheap one)

Olympic book (It is a big blue book about the '84 Summer Olympics.  It's $17.95.  I saw it at the book store at Outlets Limited Mall.)

Anything else from that bookstore.  ⬆️

Videotapes (VHS):  Olympics Highlights, Breathless, Rocky Horror Picture Show (if available), Styx (I have the order form for that one), anything else I like.

Sweatpants:  Navy, Red, Gray, Any other colors

My favorite is "Powder.  This is important."  :lmao:

Coincidentally, I watched the movie Tequila Sunrise last night which I'd never seen before.  Robert Towne's labyrinthine plot barely held my interest and the characters haven't aged well.  Raul Julia stole every scene he was in.
Oh man, it's been ages but I remember that movie being awful.

202.8 or 12 - David Bowie - Jump They Say  (Bowie Channel)

I've always liked Bowie's 1993 Black Tie, White Noise album.  Producer Nile Rodgers gives it has a slick Pop R&B sound that suits the material. There's a Morrissey cover and guest appearances from Mick Ronson, Al B. Sure and Jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie,   My nemesis Reeves Gabrels only appears on one track.

"Jump They Say" was the lead single off the album and it gives Bowie a chance to break out his saxophone.

On the Monday night welcome parties that were Country and Western night when I lived in Florida, this song was always played. There were two DJs, a husband and wife, that did the music, and they danced a lot too. The guests got free beer and wine for 2 hours and free hors d'oeuvres. Some people got quite drunk, and I had to get people up to dance. I hated doing that, but I always danced to this tune. I wore a cowboy hat, vest, and cowboy boots, and I always got scolded for leaving dark scuff marks on the wooden dance floor. Just leaving my mark. At the last Merlefest, The Avett Brothers played this song, and it reminded me of how much I like this song.
